EMG Pickups JH 'HET' Set
James Hetfield Signature Pickup Set, Chrome
In early 2009, James Hetfield contacted EMG Pickups president Rob Turner and presented him with a challenge: To create a stealth looking set that captures the clarity and punch of a passive pickup and still retains the legendary active tone that molded a generation.
Now available in EMG Metal Works Finishes and EMG’s Solderless Installation System components, the JH Set consists of the JH-N (neck) and the JH-B (bridge). Both were patterned after the pickups James had used for 30 years, but the end result was a completely different animal. The JH-N has individual ceramic poles and bobbins that feature a larger core and are taller than the 60. This produces more attack, higher output, and fuller low end in the neck position. The JH-B uses the same type of core but has steel pole pieces, unlike the 81 that uses bar magnets. This produces the familiar tight attack with less inductance for a cleaner low end.
Metal Works consists of six stainless steel cap options for any of EMG's active or passive humbucker pickups. These U.S.A made caps are available in Gold, Chrome, Brushed Gold, Brushed Chrome, and Brushed Black Chrome. These striking new designs offer players and instrument builders a broader range of premium cap options. All the power and clarity of EMG electronics, now with a modern classic look.
EMG Pickups Artist James Hetfield
James Hetfield is probably one of the most recognized figures in the world of rock and metal, being the co-founder, main songwriter, and vocalist/rhythm guitar player for Metallica.
Hetfield has been a major endorser of ESP guitars since the 1980s, and is best known for playing custom-made Explorer-style guitars with the EMG-81 inthe bridge and the EMG-60 in the neck and most recently collaborated with EMG founder Rob Turner on his signature EMG-JH Set. Hetfield's main guitar from the early days was a Gibson Flying V, used almost exclusively until about 1984 when he switched to the Gibson Explorer model.

Install was easy and I had them in about 15 minutes. They sound like a better 81/60 combo.
It also didn't hurt that I was swapping out active EMG 81/85s (which are going into another project guitar). The plug in control board and pots were all the same. I plugged in the cables to the JH pickups, swapped the humbucker frames and was up and playing.
Just WOW! Definitely a step up. The JH “HET” set really do have bite to them which add much more clarity to the attack. Exactly what's needed in a baritone. Note definition is key. And let me not forget they do pack a punch. These are hot pups. Maybe not for everyone but def well worth it for heavy gained music obviously. They do clean up well though.
Give em a try.
Would not buy anything else.
Top international reviews
They arent just for metallica fanboys and girls. If you arent a metallica fan (i only like the first 4 albums) please dont be put off by JHs name on the box. They do so much more than 'enter sandman'. They really are amazing for metal/ rock/ blues and the clean tone is great. Such an improvement from the 81/60s.
I recorded my guitar playing the same riffs before and after the pickup switch. As soon as i played a note i knew i didnt need to do that, the difference in sound was noticeable before even listening back. Listening to the same riffs side by side, it was amazing the difference in sound quality. The clarity of the JH set is unbelievable.
Theyre pricey, but worth every penny. if you plan on upgrading your EMGs, make these your first choice.
I was torn between the JH set and the standard EMG 81/85 sets and the other less expensive signature sets (Hammet, Zakk Wylde) because money is an object for me. I went with this because I play alot of 80's metal and I figure if Hetfield actually had any creative control on the output from these, his tastes would probably suit me fine. Also I can't help it, I'm not someone who cares a lot about how things look but they are really nice looking pickups (black chrome for me). The sound is amazing. It totally transformed the guitar.
Installation is solderless which was new to me but the instructions were good and complete. Instructions did NOT say to connect the guitar hardware ground cable to the spare ground slot in the pickup bus but I'm pretty sure that needed to be done. The guitar had passive pickups before but the battery fit fine into the back cavity, so no worries if you're thinking of going from passive to active. You do have to replace all the pots and input jack (not the switch) with the parts included in this kit, so it's quite a bit of work - took me about 60 minutes from strings off to strings back on.
Bottom line, fantastic pickups, excellent bright metal sound, fair price, good delivery. Very happy.
Edit to add: These went into a Dave Mustaine signature series guitar and the universe did not collapse in on itself, so that's cool too
They feature the easy to install EMG wiring harnesses but be aware they do require some basic soldering.
As far as sound goes they mimic Hetfields monster-chugger riffing perfectly! I was actually a bit surprised at how impressive the sound was and the individual note quality isn't muddied in the thickness of distortion.
Definitely a studio quality old school Metallica sound!
They look amazing and they sound amazing. Super sharp and clear sound.
The Bad (reasons for the -1 star):
The solder-less installation is a great idea, but it was not very well implemented. Apparently it's meant to work for SG and LesPaul only. I have a Gibson Explorer (a guitar that ppl will want to put a JAMES HETFIELD pickup set) and the wires were simply too short. So all the gorgeous solder-less installation with perfect factory made wiring went all downhill when you have to cut open the wires to stretch a few more inches of wire.
Also one of the pickup height screws simply wouldn't fit the pickup whole. What type of quality control is that?
At the end of the day when the installation is complete you won't noticed the different and it is a great sound, but for the price and promise, EMG could really do better.
