BACKGROUND ON ME: I slept on a brick for a mattress for 8 months and then a ridiculously soft mattress for 2 weeks after that prior to sleeping on this futon and sleeping on a soft mattress killed my back but I became accustomed to it quickly. I was moving into a very small space and since I'm in college I'll be moving at least once or twice more, and one of those possibly being overseas so compactness and versatility is definitely necessary.
MY SLEEP EXPERIENCE: Having adjusted to a soft mattress prior to sleeping on this meant that I was definitely in for an adjustment period. It didn't take very long to adjust to it and I still find myself sleeping on my side and it's no less comfortable than sleeping on my back or stomach, though this is likely due to the fact that I have a firm side-sleeping pillow. I find myself getting very restful sleep and as much as I'm afraid of bugs, since you need to take good care of the flooring you place the futon on I don't feel concerned about bugs.
FUTON QUALITY: It's very thick, I think I would've had issues sleeping on my side had I purchased the Rococo version of this futon. It's very nice thick cotton and it folds very easily, especially since it came folded in the package it arrived in. Even though it folds, there's really no noticeable fold flattening where the cotton kind of thins because its been folded so many times.
YOUR OPTIONS: So there are other options on the futon market, there's the J-life shiki-futon which in my opinion looks like the cotton is going to flatten out or get all moved around inside and become bumpy in places. The Tuft & Needle mattress, I feel, can no longer be listed as a futon mattress, it is far to wide to fold and was never really meant to be a tri-fold mattress of any sort. I can easily see this futon mattress from EMOOR lasting several years if not many if you take care of it right (If I remember it, I'll come back at a later date and update how the quality is holding up).
MY OPINION: I spent almost 4 months trying to determine what/which futon mattress to buy because I knew I wanted to move either cross-country or across the world and with a futon I could take it with me more easily than a traditional mattress. It also makes moving apartments way easier! All that being said, I think if you're set on buying a futon because they're just awesome and space-saving, save yourself the time and frustration of decision-making and get this. I feel like I'm sleeping more restfully now because I'm not sleeping on a mattress that is a brick but also not sleeping on jello.
PS: It will say that it's going to take a month to arrive or longer but EMOOR used expedited international shipping so I got it in just under 2 weeks.
Below is the mattress cover I purchased, it's more expensive than a normal fitted sheet but it has a zipper closure and is very nice, it has a wonderful clean cotton-y feel and keeps both sides of my futon off the floor and more resistant to any mites or bacteria on the floor.

I have slept on them for over a week now. I would say night 3 was the hardest. I woke up sore. I reckon it must have been my body realigning. I ordered a mattress topper from elsewhere and cotton bedding. Every morning I strip the bed and air the mattress and tatami. It takes all of 2 minutes to do. It is cold and winter in Scotland so I lay it over an airer by a window to circulate. I stand the tatami mat to allow same. The tatami mat has a grassy odour almost like a fermented scent but I quite like it. It does seem to be lessening though. I fold the remaining bedding. The room is sparse so I have space to do this. Before purchasing this futon I trial ran a small foam mattress my daughter keeps for friends visiting. It was to see how I could cope directly sleeping on the floor. It was strange but I adjusted to it very quickly. It does help keeping the room sparse I think.
I had previously spent months seeking expensive weekly chiropractic sessions for a sore back and it was in desperation that I researched other ways to help myself. I was uncomfortable in my own bed.
Now here I am sleeping on the floor every night and in summary can say this is the best thing I have done for myself. My back pain is all but gone. To be sure the mattress is very firm but I look forward to my sleep every evening and my ritual of preparing my bed in the evening (again, only a few minutes of my time). It feels so clean. I have somehow created a zen haven in choosing to sleep this way. It’s calming and special. It perhaps wouldn’t suit everyone (my work colleagues think it’s odd) but it works for many people. I am 60 years old, so not a youngster but I am able to rise with ease. This is the best change I have made for me.....yet to convince my hubby who currently still sleeps in our bed.
I've used this futon for about a week now and I sleep through the night and actually wake up feeling energised.
I was slightly put off this futon because of the price and noticing a lot of cheaper futons elsewhere, but I am so relieved that I chose EMOOR. You really cannot beat a good night's sleep
However I am disappointed. The futon had folding lines and bulges due to storage and or shipping combined. It didn't go away even after several days. When lying on it, my spine is not straight. Not only that, the filling is uneven, I noticed when I turned it 180 degrees, putting my head where I rest my legs, my head would be on a slight incline.
The futon is also not firm enough for my taste, I can easily push through it with my fingers and touch the Tatami on the other side, seems to be air mainly.
Another star I'm removing is because of false advertisement, it says to be 3 inches thick while it is only about 1 inch.
It was also inconvenience to pack the futon back into it's original shipping box as I had to reinforce it extra extra tape otherwise the box would tear and rip apart since the futon came in a vacuum sealed back. Needless to say, the futon didn't fit in its original bag anymore.
