I purchased the eBook version of this book, which is beautifully formatted. I recommend this book to anyone who is considering new ventures, careers, or just needs a few words of encouragement to endure through any of life's challenges.
As someone who has dabbled in endurance sports and definitely endured some tough life situations, I found Bolander's book to be realistic in its approach and down to earth, with snippets of wisdom worthy of the little green guy (Yoda, for the non-Star Wars folks out there) that I felt compelled to write down, or at least post on Facebook as my status of the day.
Definitely applicable to the world of endurance sports, either to keep you going or to help you realize that such physical feats ARE achievable by anyone, the book also will resonate with entrepreneurs, moms, professionals...anyone who needs to silence their "inner critic" (as Bolander calls it) from time to time with a soothing voice of encouragement and motivation.
When Jarie showed me the manuscript and asked me to write the foreword, I was impressed by the way he had condensed a wealth of experience and advice into pithy and memorable 'tweets'.
Since then I've kept the book handy above my desk, dipping into it from time to time. Each time I've found new things in the book, and it's sometimes uncanny how one of Jarie's tweets hits on a relevant issue for that particular day.
When you look at a collection of tweets, you might think it's easy to write this way, but it's actually very hard - in a 'normal' book any one tweet would form the basis of a whole paragraph or even a chapter, so Jarie is packing a huge amount into this slim volume.
"Pain and fatigue are just limits leaving the body."
"The most selfless act is being kind to someone who can't endure any more."
"Defeat will be fleeting if we endure and start again."
This kind of writing isn't just about the writing. You can't do it unless you've been there yourself and endured the (apparently) unendurable.
As an endurance athlete and leader, Jarie has walked the walk (and run the run, and biked the bike, and swum the swim). So he's earned the right to talk the talk.
If you're setting yourself a big challenge and you're not sure whether you'll have the capacity to endure, this is one book you'll want to pack for the journey.
These are some of the ones that really hit home...
~ The anxiety you feel is not the fear of failing or the ability to endure--it's the courage to start.
~ Stop thinking so much and just make it happen!
~ A problem, setback, or barrier is only as complex as you make it.
Such amazing, memorable quotes to me....! I totally recommend it as something to continually pick up and reread...or it makes a perfect gift to a friend that might need that additional word of advice!
I've already used one of the tweet nudges in a talk to a group of 100 volunteers.
