AIRCARE Pedestal Evaporative Humidifier, EP9800
This espresso evaporative humidifier from AIRCARE is sure to complement any decor. It has an easy-fill tank design. This humidifier works to add invisible moisture to your environment by moving dry air through a saturated wick filter.
Benefits of Humidication
Evaporative humidifiers are a great solution for adding much needed humidity to dry indoor air. By raising indoor relative humidity levels to 43% or above, 86% of airborne flu virus particles are rendered powerless. Maintaining proper humidity levels also helps treat allergy symptoms by soothing dryness, itchiness, and irritation in the nose, nasal passages, sinuses, mouth, throat, and eyes. Many people think pet hair is the cause of allergies, but in reality, the cause of allergens from pets is actually from their dander. Adding moisture to the air reduces pet dander and other airborne allergens. Properly humidified environments can decrease or eliminate static electricity, reducing the chance of damage to sensitive electronic equipment like laptops, desktop computers, tablets, TV’s, stereo systems, etc. Evaporative Humidification not only produces comfortable/healthy air, it is also an extremely effective way to save money on energy cost. Adding humidity to the air allows you to remain comfortable at lower thermostat settings. "The rule of thumb is that you can save about 3% on your heating bill for every degree that you set back your thermostat," says Bill Prindle, deputy director for the non-profit American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. This means evaporative humidification could save you up to 10% on your energy bill.

Previously I have been using essicks air humidifiers that are also a tower style but smaller. The reason I wanted to change is that the ones I have are a few years old and not performing as well as they once did.
I was surprised at the size of the box when it arrived...it was huge! This humidifier is bigger than my other ones but I love that it is a functional piece of furniture. I put it in the corner of my dining room and put a plant on top of it. It looks great! (see photo)
The humidifier is in two pieces. The bottom is a platform and the area where you pour the water. Unless you overfill this, there is no way for it to leak because it is all one piece. No tanks to leak. It is like filling a bucket. On the bottom of the platform are four slots to install the caster wheels. I was not sure I wanted them but am glad I installed them. You could use it with or without the casters but I like them with them because they only raise it up a tiny bit off the floor and if you have carpet you can not even tell that you have them on the unit. It makes it a lot easier to roll it out if you need to instead of lifting the whole thing.
The wicking filter that gives you humidity is built into the bottom and enclosed in a frame. When you change it you just get the new filter material and place it inside the reusable frame. Also in the bottom section is a float that you must install. The float is just a hollow piece of plastic that will press on a part of the top when it is full of water and as the water goes down it will sink and the metal will no longer be depressed. When that happens a light flashes with "F" to let you know it's time to fill it up.
The whole top part slides on to the base and includes the fan, an opening to fill it, and a small light that shines down on the water so you can see how much to add. There is a clear fill line and honestly you can not miss it. To fill the unit you slide open a door on the front and pour water in. There is another piece of plastic you can use to make the opening a bigger spout but it's not really necessary. It seems that the unit holds about 3 gallons of water because that is what I poured in before it hit the fill line. It might hold a little more than that, because I used a pitcher and filled it a bit above the exact gallon line.
Also on the front is the display that shows the current humidity, and the "F" will flash alternating with the humidity level when it's time to fill it. If the air has reached the proper humidity it shuts off the fan automatically but the little light and display lights stay on. There are three settings. Fan speed, humidity level, and an on/off switch.
There are 9 fan speeds and honestly #9 is ridiculous. It sounds like a plane is taking off. I can not imagine using this on anything but level 1 or 2. Anything higher is really disruptive. I think they could have made the fan a little less noisy with some insulation and that is the only reason it's getting 4 stars instead of five.
The products states that you could change the tile out on the top of the unit. I did not feel the need to, because it fit with our decor. I am not sure how you remove the tile that is there because it does not come out when you turn it upside down. I am guessing you would have to pry it out. It feels like it is made of plastic rather than a real ceramic tile but it is attractive. Over all it looks and functions great.
The unit works fine and keeps the downstairs of our home at the proper humidity level so far. I will come back to update when the winter temps are low to see if it is keeping up.
