For comparison I have about every major keyboard brand out there - from brown, to blue, optical-mechanical, etc. and this 35g "budget topre" experience easily takes the cake. I don't really feel any mushiness or anything, honestly. If you had to come from a membrane keyboard you would immediately notice how well defined the typing experience is and how much more you can really do with this.
All the reviews about how people have typed faster about it left me a bit skeptical - since that could be attributed to really any time you get a mechanical keyboard for the first time - but for something like this here this is no joke, and if you combine it with great typing form and really pursue your speed - I think you'll have an amazing time with this board for sure. And I have used speed switches - and while this could be interpreted as sensitive to some - I highly doubt this will be an issue for most powerful - granted if you are at least used to any tactile or linear switch. And if accuracy is an issue - there is an actuation point changer which easily remedies a lot of those concerns. But personally I keep mine on the mid setting as I like that touch-input to really sync up with my typing.
I've never used a quiet keyboard this like before - but as many reviewers have put it; yes, this keyboard is actually a very quiet non-clicky experience that rivals even modded boards. Which is where you are hearing the switch. And unlike some other gaming brand keyboards, this keyboard is a lot more sturdier due to some of its weight (the base of the board not the actual keys or switches) which means you won't have problems balancing it on certain surfaces.
The keycap experience is really nice and is something I wish more boards, even though it is PBT you can still slide your fingers around if you wish to do so when typing and you have an actuation point changer that is only only seen in $300+ foreign boards that you'd only see in Japan [Realforce Keyboards]. So this is exactly everything I was looking for 3 years ago but was not able to find. I never did find or hear about this keyboard except by browinsg a lot of forums and threads and saw this came up in a comment section about 35g keyboards that woudl be recommended for people looking for a lighter typing experience, and man could I haven chosen a better, more different, more unique, or better experience. So if you are looking for a keyboard that may different quite a bit and really introduce you into the world of mechanical keyboards - I'd highly highly recommend this one over other keyboards like Corsair, Logitech, and Razer boards. Even though you may not be able to easily try those - I'd heed reviewers from people you trust, and highly recommend at least trying this if you are looking for a genuine lighter typing experience.
While it may not be super clicky in the bona-fide Cherry MX fashion, this feels tactile enough and the flow on this really cannot be understated, assuming you don't prefer heavier switches/keyboards that is - and for that case there are some springs to give you some of that if that is what you are looking for - although I never tried those - since it isn't me. But it is possible to dome swap if that is what you are into. Which is one slight advantage that you get out of a supposed 'rubber-dome' keyboard. But you do get Cherry stems, so your keycap options will not be limited, rest assured!
The only major con I have to give to this is the software - where you need to program in certain keys, so you may want to look into finding your own way to change volume, etc. and that is where this company really should've patched up and added a lot more ease of use.
Although I have never tried any topre-boards, I don't think you'd be missing out - and it is far better to try something like this than someone that is bound to be quite a bit more expensive - and be shipped from eBay or Japan, etc. And this is just frankly a really great keyboard.
Pros:
Light!
Keycap options
Aesthetic is nice
Keycaps are durable & pretty high quality
Actuation point changer
Great for typing for extended periods of time especially if you have wrist pain
One of the only keyboards I ever have that actually has a detachable cable
A much more affordable and accessible topre-like experience (BIG PLUS)
Quiet
Mixed:
It would be good to have a numpad optino to make it a full size board, but the extra desk space you can get from this TKL (Ten Keyless) variant or the other smaller Niz Plum variants on their website may also further enhance this benefit.
Cons:
Software
Some people may prefer some 45 or 55g dome boards.
Overall: This is going to be my preferred keyboard for gaming, coding, and productivity, as well as just general fun typing, and my only gripe is that there is no numpad but you can always buy add on numpads anyways from other manufacturers to have to the side if that is what you really want, and frankly the typing experience comes first. So being able to tackle any strain, carpal tunnel, RSI without being too clicky, and quiet, while allowing you to have a lot more fun by letting you speed up more and being accurate enough to make the flow on this a dream.
I think this is one of the best keyboards I've ever used and to be honest I don't know why this isn't known as one of the #1 keyboards in general for typing. There really isn't any other major cons to this other than the software, and maybe not having a variant with a numpad + media keys section that some people may want to add on top of, for an already great keyboard. By far and away one of the newest and most engaging experiences you can get if you are looking to try something really different on top of other mechanical keyboards you may have already tried or own. I truly wish this was my first keyboard back when I started out mechanical keyboards.
The typing experience is identical to what you would expect from these switches; the only advantage is that they are compatible with MX stems, which means you can use most keysets available.
The only drawback is that the 7U space bar acts strangely at times, but this can be fixed with some calibration using their website tool.
Overall, this is an excellent option for anyone looking to purchase something similar to a topre without breaking the bank.
I wanted to try the nontouch switches but the Topre switch keyboards were too expensive, or I didn't like the layout (Realforce, HappyHacking). I then read about these switches and decided to give it a try.
I really like the sound, first of all. It isn't too loud and stabilizer is quiet too (maybe I was lucky). The keys make a sound I never heard in mechanical switches.
The keycaps are also great. I like this PBT feeling that isn't too slippery or rough. It's just perfect for me. I originally though of buying additional keycaps to make it pretty, but after using it for few days I decided to leave as is.
I would highly recommend this keyboard to people who want the experience of electro-capacitive keyboard but are scared to start with the expensive Realforce keyboards.
It was probably 5 years ago, I was told to move on from my cruddy old standard membrane keyboard to a “proper” mechanical one, so, that’s what I did!
Now I’m at the point where I’ve used mechanical keys of all purpose. Clicky and tactile, Quiet and tactile, Quiet and linear “bumpless”. I can say for sure, mechanical is an improvement from those cheap keyboards we were used to buying for $20 from the nearest electronics store.
So. Why are companies coming out with opto-mechanical “electro-capacitive” switches? Now that’s a good question that I’ve been asking myself.
The first thing I did after hearing about these “NiX” switches is, of course, being internet savvy, I contacted some friends and asked around to see if anyone had first-hand experience... I got lucky.
This friend of mine went on about how he was into the mechanical keyboard and hotswappable keys hobby, and how he got a NiX keyboard not long ago. He said confidently that they are his favorite keys.
His answer left me very intrigued. I have been using linear switches at this point in time, and I was annoyed that the short activation made me mess up when I use my keyboard for typing. I like the linear feel for games, but the “tactile” feel gives the most honest feedback.
So, going out on a limb to say these keys would give me the best of both worlds, I pulled the trigger on getting this board- and boy, did I make the right choice!
I can’t express how pleasant it is typing on this board. I find myself making fewer mistakes while writing essays about whatever the current topic is in my online communities. I find the auditory and touch sense of this board to be synchronized in a way that it really is a “jack of all trades”. I can game very well with it and typing is, dare I say, perfect!
Now, I didn’t know how well a “opto-mechanical” keyboard’s build quality would be, but this is above the standard of most high end mechanicals I’ve had the pleasure of owning/using!
I love that it has a dual-option tab set for different board elevations. It wasn’t something I noticed at first, but I saw it and thought “wow, that’s clever”.
It’s the little things I guess...
After figuring out the few exclusive functions I could do in this keyboard I really fell in love with it.
One common issue I have when I run my PC when I’m away is having to worry about the keyboard getting pressed by accident and doing something I don’t want it to do. Instead of having to unplug it like my old board, I can simply press the button next to the escape to disable the keyboard.
It makes sense how this could benefit a cat owner.
All in all, I adore the layout, feel, proficiency and quality of build with this keyboard. If you have been looking for a quieter keyboard than pretty much any available mechanical, this is quieter! If you are interested in quiet keys but don’t know if you want tactile or linear, this really is a good in-between.
I couldn’t suggest this keyboard more, for the value it is awesome and strikes confidence in buying other Epomaker gear in the future. This company seems to really be making a name for themselves and are punching above their weight value to value versus other reputable brands.
Top reviews from other countries
It's comfortable and satisfying to type on despite being mushy on the bottom out (because of the rubber domes). The quality of the keycaps is impressive for what's usually included with a keyboard; no need to swap the caps for anything higher-quality as they're double-shot PBT, and their modifiers are entirely straight. I absolutely adore this keyboard's unique sound, and it's very satisfying to type on when you bottom out. This is going to be my daily driver for work, gaming, and casual computer use for the foreseeable future.
Trigger warning for anyone who gets their egos hurt easily by being wrong (not that I care).
The stabs are not like your typical cherry mount and I always get a kick out of people who've never used Costar stabilizers and always struggle putting them back on. People get absolutely torqued by this design and act like it's their first time touching a keyboard when they see them. Costars are superior because they don't rattle, come loose or sound like crap without extensive modification. The only caveat to them is you actually have to learn how to put them on if you want to lube them- which you will, because they rattle despite being factory lubed. Companies never get enough lube, or lube stabs right and this is no exception. People like to complain about the costar stabilizers because you have to put some strength into sliding them onto the wire, but they're the best out there: It's not rocket science like many seem to believe it is. I'm not going to tell you how to take them off, just look up how to put them on and quit complaining. At least you don't have to use QMK. Like everything in a hobby, there's one thing that doesn't come handed to you on a silver platter, figure it out and deal with it. It's not hard.
One thing, though: 35 gram keys are very light indeed. I might install the included springs to bring up the weight to 45 grams (a Das Keyboard is 55 grams), but maybe not; I seem to be getting used to the lighter touch.
The build quality is excellent. The case is plastic, but it's heavy and solid. The Ctrl/Win/Alt keys on the left and the Fn key on the right are in standard layout. It's surprising how many keyboards these days have moved away from a standard layout.
I'll say just one more thing, though it might sound a bit weird: I think this keyboard is making me a better writer. I don't mean a more accurate typist, though that's also true. I mean that the buttery smoothness of the keys, the mass and stability of the keyboard, and the quiet thunk of the typing are conducive to a certain mental lightness. Make of that what you will.
If Niz ever makes a 96% keyboard with Bluetooth in it. I shall buy 10 of them at once (one for each 5 years I might have left of any typing in me). Love this keyboard.
Anyone in dilemma between HHKB, Leopold and this, get this one, and don't look back. And please don't worry about the lower weightings of the keys, I tried the 45gm (with the spring) but quickly switched back to the default. It is just the best and doesn't hurt my fingers during deadlift or piano sessions even after regular typing on this for at least an hour or so (30 minutes of practice touch typing every day).
MY MAIN TAKEAWAYS
I am a relatively fast typist (120-140wpm) but I have small hands and type rather light. I have had issues on other keyboards but with the 35g domes I can type very quickly and accurately. Also it feels incredibly satisfying to type and sounds great. When I'm streaming the keyboard is right below the mic yet it is completely inaudible. Love the two different feet height for the legs. They are very stable. The included USB C cable is braided, very nice.
SOME MINOR FRUSTRATIONS
It is frustrating that the manual is entirely in Chinese. You can get an English manual through Epomaker although it is poorly translated. The software to configure the keyboard is frustrating but once you get the hang of it there is a lot you can do. Oh and the keycaps feel great but are very easy to mark up. If you're someone who cares about clean/pristine keycaps be very careful with this one.
BEST KEYBOARD EVER
Despite the few minor nitpicks it is still the best keyboard I've used. I intend to buy a backup later on or get the Atom 68 with the 35g. If you type a lot you will absolutely love the experience of typing on this board.
-Light switches.
-Soft and smooth typing experience.
-Quiet. Even more so after lubing the stems and slider tracks.
-Adjustable actuation point makes for a subtle (but noticeable) change in distance.
-Satisfying sound.
-More affordable than Topre.
Meh:
-Font.
-Texture on keycaps leaves them prone to dirt buildup. Noticeable on edges of keys.
-Stabilizers started making that chitter chattering noise after a few weeks. Fixed with more lube.
-Cord hard to remove without pulling directly on the cable instead of the connector.
Cons:
-2 stars: Mine arrived bent. It wobbled between 2 opposite diagonal corners. Bandaid solution is to forcefully twist it the other way to bend it back. It's fine and level now. Not what I expect from a $200 keyboard.
Conclusion:
My favourite keyboard out of many. I hope it will last a long time. 5 stars if it didn't arrive bent.
