5.0 out of 5 starsVideo card as timesaver? Yep...
Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2013
Got this video card to replace a very workable, good-quality EVGA card that didn't have the performance characteristics I wanted. This one seems to be at the sweet-spot between pricey and suboptimal performance gain.

Pros
* Easy install, just as with all NVIDIA-based cards I have ever owned
* Did not need to reinstall the driver (just power down, swap cards, and power up)
* Gained a couple tenths of a point in the WEI, if you put credence in that (6.9 and 6.9)
* Gained 288 CUDA cores and 3GB (bringing the total to 384 and 4GB), which was what I was really after
* Am saving huge time and CPU effort by backing up DVDs using a program that uses the video card to do the processing
* When it's not busy backing up our DVDs, this card significantly accelerates Photoshop (tm) processing such that the new effects previews are realtime, no lag, and the actual processing is less than a quarter of the time it was with a GT430 (1GB) card
* No louder fan than what I'm used to from the GT430
* Does not require +12v additional power
* Dual DVI (necessary for my two monitors)

Cons
* Um... can't really think of any, though out of vanity I was hoping for a WEI score of 7.0 out of this card. It's silly to chase that but it's a milestone I'm so close to. I'm realizing how steep the price curve is, for the really high scores in this area.

Other thoughts
This was the second instance for me of doing NVIDIA / NVIDIA back-to-back upgrades, and in both cases the standard WHQL driver didn't need to be reinstalled. I'm impressed and pleased that it just recognized it has more engines under the hood, and off we went. It would be fun if EVGA had a buyback program... even a small credit toward the next purchase would be a great loyalty tool.
A card at this price-point complements a high-performance office/graphics system, but will be a little lacking for hardcore gaming. It's perfect for what I need.
I have not tested the mHDMI but I suspect it will work fine, should the need ever arise.

1.0 out of 5 starsCard was dead on arrival
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2014
I had two cards, in an SLI configuration, both were GeForce boards.
First one went bad, then the second, probably caused by heat damage.
I have no complaints about them, I received years of good service from them with no problems

I ordered this board as a replacement.
It allowed my computer to boot... with a *completely* black screen!
It wouldn't even display the CMOS/BIOS information!
This is NOT an OS/Driver issue... because neither the OS nor the drivers have been loaded or even
attempted to load at that point.

I tried (win7) safe mode... same thing.
I bought a new power supply... I tried changing PCIEx slots, I tried stripping every possible extra device...

I jumped through more hoops than a circus acrobat trying to get this.... thing... to work.

No such luck.

I then tried another model of card from the same manufacturer.
Same thing.
Same results.

Finally, I bought a another card... from a different manufacturer...
ASUS
Still a GeForce card, which is what I wanted, and it worked, straight out of the box,
no problems, no jumping through hoops, just 'plugged and played', exactly like it
should.

Amazon was wonderful. Very good about returning the 2 worthless EVGA cards.

As for the EVGA cards...
It was a hassle getting to their Tech Support, but once I did their support staffe
were:
1) Professional.
2) Courteous
3) Pointed fingers at everything else... Get a new motherboard! Check RAM! Power Supply!
Update BIOS!....

Well, the new power supply had no effect on the EVGA cards, the RAM checked out fine... In fact,
I am entering this review with the exact same configuration in which the EVGA cards failed, miserably.
The only thing different is the ASUS card (which works!) and the ASUS drivers (which work!).

*I* won't be buying any more EVGA video boards.

Buyer beware.

A no-brainer card. Purchased it to connect my pc to my older 1080p 60" screen. It automatically detected my tv settings which is ran through my Denon amp. I have had problems with other cards working with this configuration, but not with this card. I can switch between my connected products to the amp and wake the pc when selected and it akways shows up on the tv, which was another problem I have had in the past. It's nice to get a product that works correctly and requires no tweaking! I am very satisfied and enjoying this hassle free product.

2.0 out of 5 stars All my games started lagging!

I decided to upgrade my video card from a Geforce 9500 GT to the Geforce 640 GT 4gb. I could tell a difference in the clarity and resolution but my games started to lag. I never had this problem with my Geforce 9500 GT. The average FPS on low resolution was 43 FPS. I read some reviews online and many people were commenting that this is a good video card, but not for gaming. They suggested looking at the GeForce GTX 650 Ti for gaming. Here are my specs if anyone has any suggestions.

4GB ddr2 RAM
MSI G31TM-P21 LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Matt Spencer
3.0 out of 5 stars Didn't Last Long
Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2014
My girlfriend bought this for me as a Christmas gift since I needed a new video card after my last card broke. It's been fine since December but recently I've been having issues with the fan and insane temperatures, the you know what hit the fan yesterday when I was playing NBA 2K14. (which by no means is a demanding game as compared to games like CoD Ghosts, or Crysis 3) I was playing for about 35 minutes when the game started to lag severely, when usually I get silky smooth frame rates with that game and most other games that I play, and I could hear the fan making a horrible rattling noise, even through my case.

I minimized the game to check the temps and fan speed with Precision X, only to find the thing was at 98 degrees and the fan speed was at 90%! Then there was the smell of plastic burning that stunk up my house. Usually I have quite low temps, never seen it go past 60 degrees and usually it was about 25 or 29 degrees while idle. I immediately turned my desktop off and and opened a support ticket with EVGA, since thankfully it's under warranty. The problem with that though is that now I have to send the thing back and be without a card for probably 2 weeks until they decide to send me a replacement, and my computer is JUNK without some sort of video card so I won't be able to play any games for a while. I guess it's better than having to throw the thing in the trash and having to get another one, it's just for something that's a hundred dollars, I expected for it to work a lot longer than it has.

Hopefully I just have a defective card, I mean, I guess it happens. If not though I'm concerned what'll happen in another 6 months after I get it replaced, since then I won't have a warranty anymore. Some other notes I had about the card is why they chose a mini-HDMI port over a regular HDMI port? I never even knew there was more than one type of HDMI plug before I got this thing. Of course I didn't have anything like that in my house, and since I wanted to use it ASAP when I had it, I had to search all over my town to find a regular HDMI to mini-HDMI cord, which was an absolute pain as the first time I bought something it was a MICRO-HDMI to regular HDMI, who knew that micro and mini weren't the same freaking (I would use another word but I have to keep this review PG) thing? Something else that baffled me is the size of the card as compared to the size of the fan. It just doesn't make sense to me at all but I could just be thinking about it wrong and the fan size doesn't matter. I don't know.

Overall this is a pretty good card, good for gaming (just make sure you have at least 6GB of RAM too to get some more out of your games) but I'd just be concerned about how long it'll last.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for giving your business pc's dual monitor capability
Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2013

This is a very good video card that is not too expensive but will give your computer outstanding dual monitor capability. I installed a bunch of these cards in my business clients' computers and they were extremely happy with the quality of the image, the coloration and being able to have dual DVI monitors set up. Reason I stress using this in a business computer is because a lot of business computers only have a single PCIE slot available in the small form factor or minitower chassis's that a lot of businesses use. Or a lot of business computers have the PCIE slot at the far left side, allowing only one backplane opening so a video card needing two backplane slots wouldn't fit. 4GB's and a single slot solution - can't get any better than that.

5.0 out of 5 stars A video card as great as the 2gb GT 640 video card with double the memory. Disable the NVidia Experience option via custom instl
Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2015

This is a great video card for HTPC. That's Home Theater PCs. It has 4GB of DDR3 memory. Sucks for games, Great for Movies. The earlier GT 610 and GT630 video cards really suck. I don't know what it was about them, but I tried both and neither of them were worth... you know.... beans. This card in the 2GB or 4GB DDR3 variety, work really well. I upgraded my 2GB card to the 4GB card, not because it didn't work as expected, because it performed flawlessly, but because they didn't have the 4gb card when I got my 2GB card. or I would have bought it. Thank-you Mr. Brady

With either the 2gb or 4gb card you will be pleased. It's an NVidia chipset, so the drivers work well. One suggestion... When installing the drivers off of NVidia's website, do a "Custom" install! Why? Because you really need to uncheck the Geforce Go Experience option, otherwise you might find out that it is recommending a new driver in the middle of your movie. You don't need the latest greatest driver when it comes to watching DVDs, HDs or Blu-ray movies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Linux and 2650x1440 Monitor
Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2014
Verified Purchase
I bought this to use with the QNIX QX2710 Evolution II 27" LED Monitor (also bought on Amazon) because even though my onboard graphics is apparently capable of up to 2650x1600 it was not able to make this monitor happy.

Once properly configured in xorg.conf, it's working just fine with this card. My issue with this card is that it was not able to display both my 2650x1440 monitor and another 1920x1200 one. The largest resolution I could get on the 1920x1200 one was 800x600. :( I spent roughly 10 hours trying to make it work in various combinations along with my onboard intel graphics, to no avail. (In the end I was able to get my 1920x1200 monitor working with the onboard, and my 2650x1440 with this card).

So, I'm not sure if the limitation that prevents both monitors from running on this card at the same time has to do with Linux, xorg, the monitor, nvidia drivers, the card, or what. It's entirely possible that such a configuration would work just fine under Windows, but I have not tested that.

I deduct a star because:
- The trouble I had getting 2 monitors (of differing resolutions) to work with the card.
- The resulting image although great for the average user, is a bit choppy and tears for me when dragging windows around, even with compositing on. Once again, maybe not the card's fault. But if you plan on using Linux, keep this in mind. Comment on my review if you want more details.

Now that it's working, I'm pretty happy with the monitor/card combo, and the fact that nvidia drivers now support "optimus", which lets you render on nvidia and send through onboard ports to your monitor.

EDIT (2014-01-17): Ok, I've gotten past the issues I was having under Linux (nvidia driver settings issue), and have both a 2650x1440 and 1920x1200 monitor hooked up to the card with no problems! There is no tearing and the framerate with compositing on is smooth and easily tolerable. I don't game at all, so I can't speak to how it works for that, but on the desktop it's smooth and video plays nicely with no tearing.

This improved my graphics only a little better than the native Intel Graphics on my i7 (maybe about 15-20% better), but since I installed it, it randomly turns the monitor off, about 3-5 times per day. I'm not sure if this is a power-saving mode, or an issue with my power supply. I'm going to upgrade my PS to 750-Watts and if that makes a difference, I'll revise this review.

One note: the HDMI connection is right up against the top, and doesn't leave a lot of room, so if you have any kind of overhang it might be a tight fit to get the cable plugged in.

One other note: it uses a MINI HDMI, and it doesn't ship with one (at least, mine didn't). If you don't have an HDMI with a mini connector (not micro, but mini), then you'll also need to get one of those, too, if you want to use the one HDMI port on the card).

A good note is that it's not a terribly long card, so if your motherboard's connection are behind the PCI-e 16 slot (such as your SATA connections, for example), and their not right up against the slot, this card should leave enough clearance so it won't make getting to them a hassle. It also doesn't take up two spots, so it can have neighboring cards next to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ok Card for HTPC
Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2014

I got this card for a new desktop build that I was doing because of the price and it having 4GB of memory. I had this card in my PC all of 2 days, just long enough for my replacement card to come. There was nothing wrong with this card other than the fact that it doesn't have a whole lot of power behind it. My laptop with a 650m chip with 2GB of memory out performed this card across the board. I compared it to my bothers ATI card in his desktop from 2009 and it performed better than this card as well. I ended up getting the GTX 750Ti for $40 dollars more and am way happier with it. The only use that I could really see for this card would be in a home theater PC as it only takes up 1 slot. For games it is pretty lacking.

Pros:
Price
Size

Cons:
Not very powerful for games
