Inexpensive way to turn my Desktop PC into a Gaming PC

Inexpensive way to turn my Desktop PC into a Gaming PC
I'm looking for graphic card upgrade to my Asus M32CD desktop computer. I want a card powerful enough to play most of today's video games, without spending hundreds of dollars on it. After much market research, I decided on this EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti graphic card. There are three versions of the GTX 750 card available on the same Amazon product page: 'Ti FTW', 'Ti SC' and 'Ti'. Here are the differences:- The 'Ti FTW' version consumes more power than the other two (80W vs. 60W). So instead of getting all its power from PCI bus, it requires extra power connection from the PC power supply box.- 'Ti' and 'Ti SC' are essentially the same card, expect the latter is over-clocked from 1020MHz base clock to 1176MHz, or 15% higher.I selected the 'Ti' version because it was a few dollars cheaper, and I don't care for the marginal improvement offered by the other two versions. What I did not realize at that time was that this card has no VGA port. Instead it comes with a 'DVI-I to VGA' adapter that you need to connect between the card and your monitor. It works well as long as you don't expect to use a DVI-I monitor and a VGI-monitor at the same time. Also, the adapter added extra depth to the back of your PC.[Installation]Installation is most straightforward… if you know what you are doing. Here are some simple steps to follow:1. Shutdown the PC and unplug its AC power cord2. Remove the side panel or entire case to expose the mother board3. Locate the PCI-Express slot near the back panel (see my uploaded picture for example)4. Remove the two metal pieces closest to the PCI-Express slot5. Push the graphic card into the PCI-Express slot until it clicks6. Close the case, connect monitor to one of the output ports on the card7. Reconnect AC power cord and power up the PC[Graphic Benchmark]I ran the 3DMARK Sky Diver benchmark program to check the performance of my PC, both before and after the graphic card upgrade. See my uploaded screenshots for detailsBEFORE:- Overall rating=3228- Graphics score=2959- Physics score=6327The above suggest that the GPU (Intel HD Graphic 530) is the bottleneck while the CPU (Intel Core i5 6400) is adequate.AFTER:- Overall rating=12703 (4x better)- Graphics score=14775 (5x better)- Physics score=6974 (almost unchanged)[Gaming Performance]Before the upgrade, my PC was able to handle most 3rd-person shooter games (such as League of Legends) smoothly. But it struggles to keep up with newer 1st-person shooter games. For example, I tried the latest Blizzard game Overwatch and found it barely playable. The movement is jerky, with noticeable pixelation and aliasing effects. Good thing I'm ready to upgrade my graphic card. After the upgrade, the difference is like night and day. Overwatch now runs perfectly smooth on my PC, even with everything turned to maximum resolution and details. But of course, smoother graphic does not help me to stay alive.[Conclusion]I’m very happy with my graphic card upgrade. For a relatively small investment, I have improved the gaming performance of my desktop PC by 4-5 times. I consider this approach much better than buying a new low-end Gaming PC.[Update on July 4, 2016]I also tested a low-end MSI GeForce GT 710 card in my computer, but its performance is much worse. The GT 710 scored just 2762 in 3DMARK Sky Diver, while the GTX 750 Ti scored 12703. I'm glad that I made the right decision going with the 750.

    Pros:
    - Space saving design (freed up a lot of space in my ATX Mid-Tower case compared to the old card that was twice as long)
    - Powerful, energy efficient GPU using only 60 Watts directly from the PCI-E Bus (no need for extra power cables)
    - Stays cool and fan runs quiet
    - 2GB of GDDR5 RAM
    - Supports Max Digital resolution 4K x 2K for UHD TV's/Monitors
    - This model is overclocked from factory
    - Excellent Bang for the Buck, Only paid $139 on Amazon

    Cons:
The only problem I ran into with this Video Card, on Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, was actually caused by a 64-bit Shell Extension installed with the NVIDIA Drivers/Software. This was causing Explorer to crash when right-clicking on any Drive/Resource in the left pane to display the context menu. Explorer would close and the Desktop would be re-displayed. Event Viewer showed the faulting module in Explorer was SHELL32.dll, but did not give any other useful information.

After many hours of research on Google I found a utility called ShellExView (x64) that shows all 32-bit & 64-bit Shell Extensions installed. NVIDIA installed 2 64-bit Shell Extensions called DesktopContext Class and NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension. In this utility I disabled the NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension and this fixed the problem with Explorer crashing when right-clicking on resources in the left pane. As far as I can tell, the only thing this extension does is give a shortcut to the NVIDIA Control Panel when right-clicking on the Desktop. I don't need that since there are other ways to launch the Control Panel. I contacted EVGA about this problem on Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, and they sent the information to NVIDIA. Hopefully they will figure out the problem and fix it in the next release.

    Comments:
I'm not a gamer so I can't comment on any experiences with hard-core PC games. I bought this to replace an older AMD Radeon HD 5830 PCI-E 2.0 card that was going bad in my Home Media Server (HMS) that consists of the following:

    OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
    Motherboard: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 Socket AM3+
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Quad-Core 3.4Ghz
    RAM: Patriot Viper Extreme 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 PC2000 SDRAM
PSU: Antec True Power 650W Continuous ATX 12V 80 Plus Bronze rating
OS Drive: Adata XPG SX910 256GB SSD Sata 6Gbs
Storage Spaces Parity Array: 3 x WD Red NAS HD 2TB Sata 6Gbs

This is the only PCI-E device in my PC. This video card still takes up 2 bays, but is only about half the length of my old card. This freed up space and improves air flow in my ATX Mid-Tower case. I have the DisplayPort connected by DisplayPort/HDMI cable to a 19" LED/LCD monitor's HDMI port. I connected the HDMI Port to my Yamaha Home Theater Receiver by HDMI cable to display on my Sharp Quattron 65" LED/LCD TV. I don't use this to Extend my desktop since I'm not gaming. Instead I change it to display on the TV when I want to watch a Movie or Play my iTunes library stored on my HMS.

I'm using all the default settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel, but had to adjust the Scaling a little when displaying on my TV. The picture quality on the Monitor and TV is excellent. Configuring Surround Sound on the HDMI cable to my Yamaha HTR was easy and sounds great.

This was an excellent buy for $139 and will future proof my video needs for the next few years. I would definitely recommend this card to anyone who wants a powerful, energy efficient video card for under $150. I will update this review if I run into any future issue, but for now everything is working fine.

    Update 9/19/14:
With my older AMD Radeon card Extending the Displays never worked properly, but I decided to play around with extending them with this new card and everything worked fine. My main Desktop was on my small monitor and it extended to the TV with the correct settings. Dragging iTunes, Video Player, or any other app to the TV and going full screen was very easy. Even the Video (Win 8 container app) worked fine.

Another reviewer said this video card would not work on older Motherboards that support only BIOS and not the new UEFI. I suspect that was a problem with their specific Motherboard. My ASUS Motherboard is 3.5 years old, uses the older BIOS, and it had no problem using this PCI-E 3.0 card in my PCI-E 2.0 port. If your a gamer you would want to put this in a Motherboard with a PCI-E 3.0 port to get the best performance.

The only other issue I've found so far, other than what I listed in Cons above, is that the NVIDIA GeForce Experience icon in the System Tray stops working after I turn off the monitor or let it go into power saving mode. When I bring the display back, then I can't use the icon to access the options. Not a big deal for me since there are other ways to launch the GeForce Experience and Control Panel utilities.

    Update 9/27/14:
In order to get a real test of video quality and performance, I downloaded the Final Fantasy 14 A Realm Reborn Official Benchmark utility. This does not allow you to play the game, but plays some very graphics intense clips from the game. At the end it gives a Benchmark Score to show how well the video card performed. I'm running this connected to my 65" LED TV by HDMI port. In the utility I set the Graphics Settings & Display Settings to the max for 1080P. Running this utility 3 times gave Very High Benchmark Scores from 6642 to 6696. I used the EVGA PrecisionX 16 utility to monitor the Video Card while the Benchmark was running. The GPU never got above 50C/122F, the GPU Clock never went above 1305Mhz, & the Fan Speed never went above 50%. The video quality on my TV was super crisp, clear, & smooth without lag. I'm just wondering how much better this would have performed if my motherboard had a PCI-E 3.0 port instead of its older PCI-E 2.0 port. I've only had this card for 2 weeks, but overall I'm very impressed with quality, performance, & price.

Style: GTX 750 Ti SCVerified Purchase
As far as I am concerned, right now (Spring-Summer 2014) the GeForce 750 Ti is the best video card for the budget gamer, and is amazingly energy-efficient at the same time. EVGA consistently produces high quality versions of NVidia cards, and so I recommend this card whole-heartedly if it falls within your budget for a video card.

I got this card to replace a GeForce GTX 560. The crazy thing is, I went from needing 2 6-pin power connectors for the video card, to none, and got a moderate performance boost at the same time. The 750 Ti is faster, quieter, and more energy efficient than the 560. Before and after I had the card installed, I did several tests using the Uningine Heaven benchmark. In my testing I found that the 750 Ti consistently performed 15-20% faster than the 560 with the same options set.

The Dark Souls 2 PC version was released about the same time, and I had preordered, so I tested it before and after as well. With the 560, some of the settings had to be turned down from optimal, but the game looked an ran fine. Once I installed the 750 Ti, all settings returned to high, and the game still ran beautifully. This is on a Core i5-2500K machine with 16 gigs of memory, running on a 1080p monitor.

In short, I think this is the best card for the money, hands down. It may not be the highest end card, but it still runs 95% of everything today at the highest setting, and will continue to for at least a year or two. It is fast, quiet, energy efficient, and short! It was significantly shorter than my 560. The only caveat I can think of is that the back of the card only has 1 DVI slot. For those people that have two monitors hooked up over DVI, you may need an adapter to convert from either HDMI or DisplayPort to DVI, or perhaps you can hook your monitor up through one of these. A lot of cards up until now were shipping with dual DVI ports. Having a DisplayPort port, however, will set you up to be able to do G-Sync, which is pretty amazing in itself. Right now though, the ability to do G-Sync is restricted to very few monitors.

I hope this review helps someone. I was a little nervous when I purchased the card, fearing it might not be powerful enough for all the games that I currently play. It runs everything great and exceeded my expectations. Frankly, I prefer this card over something like the 780 Ti, which is a monster but sucks power like a monster too. This is a great option for an HTPC build as well due to its size, power consumption, and HDMI port.

I bought this card as part of a budget upgrade package for my computer and I've been really impressed by it's performance so far.

All the games I play are now running at max settings or else almost maxed out, returning results of anywhere from 45fps in Armoured Wafare (due to the game not being optimized yet) to 90+ fps in World of Warcraft on High Settings (I could get roughly the same on Ultra Settings but it caused problems with the drivers, but that's on Nvidia's programming and not the card itself). The card is quiet and even under extensive gaming sessions with lots of processing required like in a raid the temperatures never got higher then 45 degrees C, though I did record a maximum reached of 73C when the driver crashed.

Over all this was a good buy for a budget upgrade to bring my then 7 year old computer into the modern day. It may not be the best card out there but as upgrades go it's hard to beat the bang for the buck you get from this one.

The card also arrive about a week earlier then what Amazon had estimated, so that was a boon also.

This card is probably the best budget card in the market. It is really cheap and does a wonderful job in handling heavy games. I can play Black ops 3, Battlefield hardline, Black ops 2, Far cry 4, Just cause 3, and tons of other new games that are quite graphically intense. All on ultra settings! I am using this card with a 4th generation 3.5 ghz i5 processor and 8 th ddr3 ram. I got the single fan model because I have a mini arc case but if you have space for a larger card I suggest you get the ftw edition of the 750ti.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente producto por un precio razonable
