I purchased a Dell Inspiron computer a couple of years ago for general household use with no plans to use it for gaming. However, I couldn't resist buying Starcraft II and Skyrim, so I bought this card as well to upgrade my computer.

The price of the card alone is impressive, since this is a mid level card which I was able to buy for under $100 (Amazon was running a special, so I think the normal price is $110 or so). This is probably the cheapest card available as of this review that will run modern computer games on the highest graphics settings.

Installation was very easy; it took about 10 minutes to open the case and put the card into the PCI-e x16 slot on my motherboard, and another 5 minutes to install the drivers which EVGA ships with the card. However, please note that this card requires a power supply rated at least 400 watts, and which has a 12 volt rail that can deliver 20 amps (one of those cords with a 6 pin connector). If, like me, you are upgrading a general purpose computer, you may have to upgrade your power supply at the same time.

The 550's real world performance was surprisingly good. In Starcraft II, I put all the graphics options on "Ultra" settings at a 1920x1080 resolution, which would usually be a tough job for a $100 graphics card. This Geforce card, however, never complained or dropped below 45 frames per second, and averaged around 60 fps. That's more than enough performance for a casual game player or casual video editor. As with the power supply, you should be aware that many games or video editing tasks will require a CPU that can match your graphics card, so your results may not be as good as mine if you have a low end CPU in your computer.

The one aspect of this card that I was most apprehensive about was overheating. I had heard some horror stories from people who had damaged their new graphics card by installing it into a computer that didn't have enough ventilation. My card never got above 74 degrees Celsius after an hour at 100% usage, and I have case with only one vent and fan. So while overheating is definitely not a problem, the flip side is that the card has a very large heatsink covered by a plastic case, and a powerful fan. The heatsink makes the card so large that it covers a second PCI slot, which shouldn't be a problem unless you are using three or four PCI cards for some reason. Slightly more annoying is the fan, which can get loud when the card is under a heavy load. I didn't think the fan noise was bad enough to deduct a star, but more sensitive users might disagree.

Lastly, if you use MSI Afterburner, you have plenty of control over the card. I normally don't overclock anything in my computer, but out of curiosity I did overclock the 550 by 10% for a little while before putting it back to normal. Overclocking took about 5 seconds with Afterburner, and you can even change the core voltage of the card with just a couple of clicks (only do that if you really know what you're doing!). During the short time while I had my card overclocked, everything seemed to work quite well. Of course, if you are changing your card's settings, there are no guarantees, but overclocking enthusiasts will find this card very easy to mess with. Even if you have no interest in overclocking, you can still use Afterburner to slow down the speed of the fan and make the card quieter; if you haven't changed any other settings on the card it should be no problem to slow down the fan speed a little.

Well, this review rambled on longer than I meant it to, so let me sum up: this card is quite cheap considering the performance it delivers, it's easy to install and use, and it is very good at everything that an average video card buyer would want to do. I unreservedly recommend the GTX 550 ti to anyone looking for a middle-of-the-road graphics card.

Very good performance. $130 for a GTX 550 is a good value. Especially when a $20 rebate comes back from EVGA. Don't think I would ever SLI this card, but it does allow for some overclocking.

It is a large two slot card that needs a power plug. Make sure your power supply is sufficient - I'd say at least 500W.

Relatively quiet, but gone is the VGA port. Does come with an adapter though. If I recall it also has an HDMI port.

Will play modern games. The cutting edge ones will require you to dial down the settings, but you should still get a good experience. Will play Bluray discs well, the AMD card I used earlier did not. Had to return it and swap it out for this one.

It is a very good value, not a superior one. Loses one star as it could have done away with the rebate gimmick and just price the card at $110.

My old gaming rig needed to be updated, in a major way. I was running an AMD Athlon 6000+ X2 64 and a 512MB EVGA 9800GT card... So I bought new guts, and this was the card I settled with. I mainly wanted to play Diablo 3, and since my system barely met the minimum requirements, it was time for the upgrade. The only real issue I was having was money... I'm kinda broke, so I had to keep things under $500 total. Just about every forum suggested this card if you wanted the best bang for the buck. Over all, I'm quite pleased with this guy, though I didn't read that it takes 2 slots. I had plenty of room, but I was amused at how fat this guy is! Anyway, I'm playing Diablo at high settings without any lag what-so-ever. It idles at as low as 30C, and it hits close to 70C with a load on it. The 550 Ti is not only cooler than my old card, but much quieter as well! I haven't had much time to throw any other games at it (and none of them in my collection are as current as D3,) as I've been playing the hell out of Diablo. I've never been one to overclock my equipment, so I have no idea if you can unlock this or tweak it. Besides, I'm quite pleased with it's out-of-the-box performance!

I highly recommend this card for anyone looking for solid yet inexpensive GPU.

    **UPDATE 9/7/12**
I've had more time to play some games, and I'm still quite happy. Guild Wars 2 is running at very high settings at around 40fps, and Starcraft 2 is set to extreme (1400x900 resolution, due to monitor restrictions) with flawless results!

    **UPDATE 10/20/12**
Two Worlds 2 and The Witcher 2 all run great at the top settings (again, 1400x900 res,) as does Torchlight 2 (though that one will probably run on my netbook...) I don't suspect that I'll really need to upgrade this card anytime soon. It handles some intense games with great results!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just purchased the EVGA 550ti
Reviewed in Canada on May 7, 2012
Let me just say I've always been happy with EVGA products, so when I saw the 550ti for 130 bucks, I couldn't pass it up. I'm upgrading my computer for Diablo 3, and I'm planning on future proofing this computer with a new power supply, and this card. I only needed a card that could run Diablo 3 at max @ 60FPS, and this card here does exactly that. I've overclocked it even further than the already-overclocked GPU up to 1.05GHz, and it runs so damn smooth.

The only problem with it is that it's a bit big for my case, but I'm using a *tiny* HP Pavillion case which needs to be upgraded when I purchase a motherboard.

I'm still waiting for my parts to get here but let me just say, I'm really damn excited. EVGA is always superb, and I've never had issues with their products. Their warranties are so good that if they don't make your card anymore, they'll replace it with a better card for about the same price. Stick with EVGA.

PS: I also purchased a Corsair Builder Series CX600 to power this and my computer, and I hope it does as well as this card does.

5.0 out of 5 stars Klein, aber fein
Reviewed in Germany on August 4, 2011

I was looking for a video card with a price close to 100 Pounds.I had only two alterntives: nVidia and ATI. I read a lot of reviews, benchmarks and tests,so the GTX 550TI was the most good in terms of performance/price. I downloaded the last drivers, but I encountered problems in installing the new version because of the stupid Windows 7 automatic driver installer.I had a nVidia card before and was installing the old version drivers no matter I did, even uninstalling the card from device manager and deleted the driver files.I don't get how Windows was managing installing the old drivers,I even disconnected the computer from the internet.Whatever.I'm not a gamer but I love rally games,so I started right away Dirt 3.I'm held back by my old processor E7400 dual core, but even so I achieved a decent 25fps in full detail and my native 1600x1200 Eizo's resolution.EVGA make very good quality products,is not noisy at all but is true is getting hot when you use the 3D.However the cooling system is good, and I don't have overheating (no overclocking also). You must take care on installation.I have a mid tower case made by Asus and 3 HDD drives. The card fitted but I had to remove one of the HDD and move it in a 5' drive bay. This card is quite long. However I plan to build a new system and leave the old one to my mother and I will fit in a EVGA GeForce GTX 560 Superclocked.I think is a better option.I will use a i5 2500K SandyBridge on a Asus Asus P8Z68-V LX motherboard and 16GB of Corsair Vengeance RAM.You can buy this card in peace,on this money you have no other option and owning a EVGA is something different, you can feel the quality and the stability of the video card.
