Best card i've ever owned. Couldn't be more satisfied with its performance, works wonderfully with nVidia 3D.
BFBC2, Resident Evil V and Metro 2033 (even Half Life 2) look absolutely stunning when compared with nVidia 9600 gt 1gb which is a very capable card and can handle 3D as well.
Heat problem is well managed by stock fan, however i'll be swapping to liquid cooling once i find an acceptable and affordable solution.
TOTALLY RECOMMENDED - Fastest single chip card on the planet for the time being.

PD: can't use 9600 gt for Physx, it slows down the gtx480, seems like the problem has to do with number of cores and cannot be solved... too bad

The EVGA 480 GTX is a very well developed card as heat dissipation is increased (there is really no need to use water cooling on this card at all!) and the graphics are superb. Since this is a new card, there are some driver issues but that's to be expected. I get a "hiccup" every so often while playing games (compared to using a 285 GTX) but again - this is the driver and Nvidia will come out with newer ones as time goes on.

While I do occasionally enjoy gaming in 1080x1920 resolution, that topic has been covered by much better players than I. My primary reason for waiting on the GTX-480 was it's use with adobe's CS5 video editing package. I shoot digital video from 3 cameras, mix audio tracks digitally, and discovered the value of the cuda processor on a video card.

Test Case (2009-2010)

TRY 1: Adobe CS4, 2.73 Ghz quad core 4 thread / 4 core system, 8GB ram, standard graphics adapter. Time to render 2hr 1080x1920 HD video @ 24mbps to blu ray disc, including transitions, final formatting, etc, - 7.5 DAYS of CPU time. Better invest in either a faster system or a good UPS. This machine was fine for multitasking but hd video just killed it.

Given my harware in 2009 was woefully inadequate I went on a bang for the buck shopping spree. I learned that windows 7 gets tied to the motherboard when activated, so be sure to pick the motherboard before installing the o/s - OEM mobos are never going to be zippy, but I paid less than the cost of the proc+ram on sale from HP at the time. I was actually able to use their case in the end after some grief.

The system I purchased was an off the shelf machine from HP (the 180 high end MB - 2 SLI but no support for it as made in china.) - they had it on sale with the i7975 proc, 24 GB ram, and a strange GTX 220ish nvidia card with no mfgr's name on it - 216 cuda core and 1.7 GB ram which made SLI impossible for a half dozen reasons, but the system was cheaper than buying the ram and the proc from any store so the system was just gravy. I gave it the same 1 week video task running CS4 - again starting from raw data off 32GB SDHC cards, it finished in 32 minutes.

I can't speak of power consumption as I have no way to measure that in my rig as compared to my old card, but it is quiet and has yet to overheat. I do have if I remember right a 1000W supply, so for all I know it could be a power hog, however. It gave a big improvement over my old card (which was quite a few years old). By the time you read this, this one may be obsolete of course... I recommend while it is still available.

Other than the new 5 series which is a little improved with architectural advancements and cooling and a couple other new high tech considerations. A 480 is just about the equivalent and you would never notice a difference as a pretty extreme gamer. If you have a mutil thousand dollar system with the highest of the high in monitors, more than the 1980x 1200 resolution, Processors and everything else in the top 3 of what exists today, the 480 is going to be a card that can max everything. Todays and tomorrows games out to the max. Only the want for having the newest of the new justifies getting anything more than this.

While I'll keep this shorter, the heat issues, dont really exsist in the manner most think it would, yes it runs warm but well within tolerance, and as bout as warm as any other card I've owned, to be honest anyone buying it now is pretty much an early adopter as not too many dx11 games are out yet, but there are a few, Bad Company Two has a bit of support adding soft shadows which is just one extra detail to make the game look even prettier, Dirt 2 is also just a fun game to look at although there isnt too muh tesselation in that game but with all the tech in the card be on the lookout for games to take advantage of it down the road. Perfromance is amazing, I can max whatever I want at 1920x1200 (max supported by my monitor) and nothing can cause it to stutter. the folding numbers are a vast improvment if you're into folding@home project and down the road as driver maturity continues I'm excited to see what becomes if this card.

I needed more vram for creating video movies. The card has 2 DVI ports and 1.5gb of vram. The factory card in my Mac had 1 DVI port and .5gb of vram. I am running dual monitors with Final Cut Pro on a 24” screen and all my source windows (4) open on another monitor.

This unit has its own fan and takes up 2 slots on the computer. Its been working great and I love the results.
