Here is the fix that I am using
Instead of letting the display turn off after x amount of time I have it now set to turn off never. I then simply press the power button on my display to turn it off. My theory is that something is powering down after a certain amount of time and the monitor doesn't receive a signal to wake. By being set to never turn off it is constantly receiving a signal. Not a perfect solution but so far the computer has been running perfectly with no further issues. Also I am not referring to waking the computer. My computer is set to never sleep or hibernate. The hard disk runs 24/7. I am only referring to waking the monitor itself.
Amazon has the minimum power supply requirement at 400 watts. EVGA's website has the minimum at 300 watts. From what I have read the card only uses 60 watts maximum. I also believe that a graphics card that draws all of its power from the pci-e slot can only get a maximum of 75 watts from the pci-e.
I have been keeping track of the temperature of the graphics card with speedfan and at idle it runs about 82 degrees F. The card that came with my computer was a crappy AMD Radeon HD 5450. Pretty much bottom of the barrel. The fan started making noise and the temp on that card was 112 degrees F at idle and creeping up to 130 or more just viewing web pages.
One thing to note is that the higher end graphics cards seem to have a tendency to make whining noises while the card is working. I can hear mine making a very annoying noise when I play chess titans every time a piece is moved.
With my original HD 5450 the windows experience index gave the graphics a 5.1. The GT 730 that I tried bumped it up to a 6.9. The GTX 750 TI SC bumped it all the way up to a 7.7 out of 7.9 maximum score. Pretty impressive for a card that will run on a crappy Dell with 300 watt power supply.
I don't currently play any video games so I can't say anything about the gaming performance. I have an excuse now to buy a joystick and some video games.
Due to the low power supply requirement this gave me the option to breathe a little life back into a computer that should probably be replaced. If you have a basic computer that is limited on graphics cards due to power supply requirements this is probably the best card you can get. I am very happy with it.
*Update* 3-23-16
I have solved the issue of the card making a whining noise. Some games like chess titans are not limited in the frame rate. I downloaded MSI afterburner and it allows you to limit the frames per second. I read it is recommended to limit the fps to the refresh rate of your monitor. In my case that is 60. I set the onscreen display to show fps and chess titans runs at around 1100 fps. By limiting the fps to 60 the whine is completely gone. You can also adjust your fan speed, monitor gpu temperature and a ton of other things with this software.
*Update* 10-15-16
This card still amazes me. At this point I have played Wolfenstein New Order, Skyrim Elder Scrolls and Witcher 3. According to the minimum requirements I shouldn't be able to play these games with this card or my CPU. Witcher 3 was the only one that I noticed some stutter on. I was getting 40 to 50 FPS. I do play with a screen resolution of 1280x768 so I'm sure that makes a huge difference in allowing me to play these games.
- Space saving design (freed up a lot of space in my ATX Mid-Tower case compared to the old card that was twice as long)
- Powerful, energy efficient GPU using only 60 Watts directly from the PCI-E Bus (no need for extra power cables)
- Stays cool and fan runs quiet
- 2GB of GDDR5 RAM
- Supports Max Digital resolution 4K x 2K for UHD TV's/Monitors
- This model is overclocked from factory
- Excellent Bang for the Buck, Only paid $139 on Amazon
Cons:
The only problem I ran into with this Video Card, on Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, was actually caused by a 64-bit Shell Extension installed with the NVIDIA Drivers/Software. This was causing Explorer to crash when right-clicking on any Drive/Resource in the left pane to display the context menu. Explorer would close and the Desktop would be re-displayed. Event Viewer showed the faulting module in Explorer was SHELL32.dll, but did not give any other useful information.
After many hours of research on Google I found a utility called ShellExView (x64) that shows all 32-bit & 64-bit Shell Extensions installed. NVIDIA installed 2 64-bit Shell Extensions called DesktopContext Class and NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension. In this utility I disabled the NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension and this fixed the problem with Explorer crashing when right-clicking on resources in the left pane. As far as I can tell, the only thing this extension does is give a shortcut to the NVIDIA Control Panel when right-clicking on the Desktop. I don't need that since there are other ways to launch the Control Panel. I contacted EVGA about this problem on Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit, and they sent the information to NVIDIA. Hopefully they will figure out the problem and fix it in the next release.
Comments:
I'm not a gamer so I can't comment on any experiences with hard-core PC games. I bought this to replace an older AMD Radeon HD 5830 PCI-E 2.0 card that was going bad in my Home Media Server (HMS) that consists of the following:
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
Motherboard: ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 Socket AM3+
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Quad-Core 3.4Ghz
RAM: Patriot Viper Extreme 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 PC2000 SDRAM
PSU: Antec True Power 650W Continuous ATX 12V 80 Plus Bronze rating
OS Drive: Adata XPG SX910 256GB SSD Sata 6Gbs
Storage Spaces Parity Array: 3 x WD Red NAS HD 2TB Sata 6Gbs
This is the only PCI-E device in my PC. This video card still takes up 2 bays, but is only about half the length of my old card. This freed up space and improves air flow in my ATX Mid-Tower case. I have the DisplayPort connected by DisplayPort/HDMI cable to a 19" LED/LCD monitor's HDMI port. I connected the HDMI Port to my Yamaha Home Theater Receiver by HDMI cable to display on my Sharp Quattron 65" LED/LCD TV. I don't use this to Extend my desktop since I'm not gaming. Instead I change it to display on the TV when I want to watch a Movie or Play my iTunes library stored on my HMS.
I'm using all the default settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel, but had to adjust the Scaling a little when displaying on my TV. The picture quality on the Monitor and TV is excellent. Configuring Surround Sound on the HDMI cable to my Yamaha HTR was easy and sounds great.
This was an excellent buy for $139 and will future proof my video needs for the next few years. I would definitely recommend this card to anyone who wants a powerful, energy efficient video card for under $150. I will update this review if I run into any future issue, but for now everything is working fine.
Update 9/19/14:
With my older AMD Radeon card Extending the Displays never worked properly, but I decided to play around with extending them with this new card and everything worked fine. My main Desktop was on my small monitor and it extended to the TV with the correct settings. Dragging iTunes, Video Player, or any other app to the TV and going full screen was very easy. Even the Video (Win 8 container app) worked fine.
Another reviewer said this video card would not work on older Motherboards that support only BIOS and not the new UEFI. I suspect that was a problem with their specific Motherboard. My ASUS Motherboard is 3.5 years old, uses the older BIOS, and it had no problem using this PCI-E 3.0 card in my PCI-E 2.0 port. If your a gamer you would want to put this in a Motherboard with a PCI-E 3.0 port to get the best performance.
The only other issue I've found so far, other than what I listed in Cons above, is that the NVIDIA GeForce Experience icon in the System Tray stops working after I turn off the monitor or let it go into power saving mode. When I bring the display back, then I can't use the icon to access the options. Not a big deal for me since there are other ways to launch the GeForce Experience and Control Panel utilities.
Update 9/27/14:
In order to get a real test of video quality and performance, I downloaded the Final Fantasy 14 A Realm Reborn Official Benchmark utility. This does not allow you to play the game, but plays some very graphics intense clips from the game. At the end it gives a Benchmark Score to show how well the video card performed. I'm running this connected to my 65" LED TV by HDMI port. In the utility I set the Graphics Settings & Display Settings to the max for 1080P. Running this utility 3 times gave Very High Benchmark Scores from 6642 to 6696. I used the EVGA PrecisionX 16 utility to monitor the Video Card while the Benchmark was running. The GPU never got above 50C/122F, the GPU Clock never went above 1305Mhz, & the Fan Speed never went above 50%. The video quality on my TV was super crisp, clear, & smooth without lag. I'm just wondering how much better this would have performed if my motherboard had a PCI-E 3.0 port instead of its older PCI-E 2.0 port. I've only had this card for 2 weeks, but overall I'm very impressed with quality, performance, & price.
Top reviews from other countries
Do not be fooled by the small size or low power requirements of this card, it is highly capable for even very current games! My superclocked (SC) version from EVGA overclocks itself automatically using nvidia gpu boost to 1320mhz which is far above the 1255mhz advertised. Typically it can run high to very high settings on modern games at 60 fps (shadow of mordor, or tomb raider for instance) and can manage ultra/max settings if you don't mind the fps dropping to about 30-40. Given the low power requirements of this card the temperatures of the gpu (measured using gpu z) never raise above ~55° even when under full load for prolonged gaming. Consequently the cooling fan on the card stays very quiet!
All in all I am very impressed with this graphics card, and would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to either upgrade an older pc or to build a new gaming pc without having to spend a fortune on a graphics card.
Note:
This card has no PCIe 6 pin power input, and instead gains it's power direct from the motherboard.
The motherboard is capable of powering up to 75watts to the card - even though the EVGA SC version is rated at 60watts I have recorded spikes of up to 70watts drawn under very high sudden load.
EVGA recommends running this card on a system with at least a 300w power supply with 20 amps on the 12v rail (you can find this labelled on your power supply). This card ran fine on my old pc with this specification power supply
Setting it up was easy basically just plugged it in making sure the pc was fully switched off (unplugged and grounded myself against static by keeping one hand on the chassis of the pc) fired the pc up and presto it downloaded drivers and was raring to go - the games I had were GTA V, battlefield 2, a few steam games and No mans Sky - I used a handy program called Geforce experience (free download) this sets up the graphics settings in each individual game for you - as many will know you can spend as long tweaking settings on games as actually playing them so this program is a godsend.
All the games are playable - GTA looks nice but could look better and No mans Sky can run a little jerky but I think some of that may be down to me only having 8gb RAM (next thing is to upgrade that to 16GB) All in all for a low price card it seems to do the job very well - its also very quiet.
If your an all out game fanatic maybe try to aim for something twice the price but for me the casual gamer its an ideal choice.
It is just a different world using this TV as monitor.
My old GC is huge and barely fit my PC with a mm to spare. I made noise and took 2 extra power source to work. This is so light and small. It was the easiest thing to install. It was well protected. All the exposed connection were covered with plastic. It has HDMI 2, DVI and also Display Port which will give me even a better picture and video quality if I could connect it to the TV but my TV does not have display port connection.
I highly recommend getting a 4K TV and this for your desktop if you do not have one and you will not regret it.
I am running a factory built Acer Aspire M3290 with H67 chipset, I5 2300 CPU and OEM 300W power supply (bought in July 2011).
The latest BIOS is installed (P01.A03 dated 18/02/2011 which does support UEFI but not secure boot) and I am running Windows 10 64 bit in UEFI mode.
I had read on the EVGA forums of older motherboards/BIOS having some issues running this card so was a little apprehensive.
My 3 main concerns were 1) card size (would it fit) 2) power supply have enough capacity and 3) would the BIOS/motherboard support it
However I went ahead and placed an order and the card arrived today (23/01/2016).
Well fitting was very easy (5 minutes) so issue 1) went away then I applied power and got post beep plus booted into windows so 2) and 3) also were good.
Having run it for some hours now all looks stable and the performance is fantastic.
Have done a number of benchmarks and stress tests without any issues.
I have also registered the card with EVGA and for a very small sum have extended the warranty to 10 Years ! (so will out last any future upgrades I make).
I can recommend this card and for the price it will blow your socks off ......
