The first time I got it I noticed a coil wine with the power supply although I set it to eco mode which means the fans are not spinning. It kind of bug me at the start but I am willing to overlook that as the PSU looks great and I am not willing to go through the trouble of doing RMA. All works for a few months until I started finding my PC is randomly restarting. I thought it could be my overclock going wrong so I put back to stock. It does not occur as often but it does. I realized it was Eco mode causing it. Even on a stable overclock it would cause the PC to restart. It look like the power from the supply is not that clean and the voltages are not stable disappointingly. My pc would restart without a blue screen in stock setting where I know it is stable.
I have sent this Psu for Rma and it is really expensive for this heavy beast. It cost 1/4 of the price I paid for the power supply even for standard registered shipping in the place I live. The weight of P2 PSU is 2.8kg or about 6.17 pounds without wires attached which is very heavy. With all the wires attached it would easily be in the 8kg range. Something to note if you have to RMA and it would cost alot doing an overseas RMA like me. Again I extremely disappointed for something that is touted to last for 10 years with its warranty as well as its high sticker price and stellar reviews from sites like JohnyGuru. I have received the PSU back now there is still a slight coil wine to it with eco mode which is supposed to be total silence, I just hope that it works well enough as it is leaving a rather bitter taste in my mouth. Keeping my fingers cross for a full test. I would not be doing RMA with this PSU if it fails again as the price of shipping this is high that I find it is better just buying a new one. For the price I paid with the repairs I could go for the 1200 watts P2. Although my Psu is build after the date of the recall incidence for this P2 power supply, I have those problems I describe. For those that don't know EVGA did a recall for P2 1000W, G2 1300W and the G 1000W with those psu made before October 2013. I would suggest to go with other models aside from this 1000w p2 or the rest I have told before. Going with 1200 watt maybe a better idea.
My experience is not representative of what you would face. I could be unlucky getting a bad dud, but I still can't shake of the bitterness that I gone overbudget from this purchase from the repairs.
Update 5 JULY 2015 : I have been running prime 95 with both stock as well as overclock at stock setting. There is no restart so far. Though the coil whine is there when my ear is close by. I can overlook that as it is soft enough to be drown by fan noise. How loud the coil whine depends on your hearing to high frequency. I could hear it with my right ear but not with my left. It looks like my ear is getting older. I look around and find that coil whine is a common problem among power supply, you only hear it when the coils started vibrating at the rate of hearing of human hearing. Power supply would have glue at its coils or capacitors to dampen the vibration when it stated resonating.
As for the RMA. I did a standard RMA where I have to ship my power supply to EVGA. The shipping will be at your expense to ship back eventhough the product is defective. There might be exception in some situation where Evga may ship you a prepaid label but generally you paid for the shipping. It took me a week for my package to get to Evga with standard registered shipping. I got my power supply 3 days later. Shipment is rather quick with Evga as they used TNT to ship back to me, all is package well in bubble bag and form lining. The p2 I got is similar looking to my previous one. I noticed that the switch are more firm and the medallion where I still have a plastic on is not there. I found later it is a refurbished unit there are a couple of paint chips at the grills indicating it is used before. A slight cosmetic issue nothing major that bother me slightly but a a black sharpie can fix that.
EDIT: After a couple of months things went bad. At first this PSU was used on a 6600k paired with a GTX 960, so not exactly what you would call a power hog. Never had a problem back then. Fast forward a couple of months, I swapped the 6600K for a 6700K (Now OCed) and a 970GTX (OCed too). The thing is, that when using more than 50% of the unit capacity (325w) the PSU would instantly shut down. A 970GTX with a 6700K can easily reach this amount with Furmark and Prime95 running at the same time. And even some games like GTAV or BF4 can hit a high-wattage on the power meter. Tried with ECO mode ON and OFF, same thing. Swapped every modular cable I could, same result. When I tried with another PSU everything went without an issue.
Another thing to add: freezing, high CPU consumption (appeared as Hardware interrupts and DPCs on the process explorer), and low performance in general were a thing when using the 970GTX with this PSU. At first I obviously thought it was the GPU, but the problems went away when I tried with another PSU, so obviously the cause of every issue was the EVGA.
And since i'm not longer in the States, I can't RMA the thing from where I am.
I may have lost $100, but at least now I know from which brand not to buy.
Would EVGA honor the warranty and provide a replacement? No. They sent the power supply back to me with a red sticker on it indicating where the case had a slight opening on the side. That violated the warranty. For all I know I could have bought it in that condition. The packaging was sufficient and I never tried to open the case.
Warning: if you find even the most insignificant imperfection in an EVGA product, reject it immediately. Otherwise, it will cost you the warranty.
