Great card for price, I bought this instead of hd 5770

I have been looking for a good video card in my price range, but I really prefer eVga and Nvidia over ATI but the HD 5770 was the only card provide DX 11 and the power I wanted and the price I could pay. Then after some research on a comparable Nvidia card I found this GTS 450 superclocked to actually score better than the 5770 in many benchmarks. I purchased the card got it two days later free with temporary prime membership trial installed it, used the molex to 6 pin pcie adapter started up and worked right away. This card replaced a GT220 I bought hastily when a video card burnt out, and the GT 220 was a decent card for a while but it just didn't wow me. The GTS 450, however, is a big WOW fallout new vegas runs with 2xmsaa and 4xAF with high texture and medium all else at 65 FPS much better than the 220 which struggled for medium with no msaa or af. Dirt 2 saw a jump from 71 AVG FPS to 135 AVG FPS both set to 2xmsaa and medium all else. Needless to say I have been able to fully enjoy all of my video games now and am very pleased. Would recommend this card to friend, in fact I did and I plan to buy another to do dual SLI with my GT 220 as a dedicated Physx card/

This item was ordered as a part of "upgrade" to my wife's PC. She would be better qualified to review it however she prefers not to do reviews and as such I shall attempt to do so myself. Although it was part of an upgrade for wife's PC I was "forced" to use it as my graphics card (XFX Radeon HD 6870) developed a faulty fan and had to be sent to XFX for a replacement (no issues with their RMA myself, by the way). Luckily the card has double lifetime warranty. :D

The EVGA card was easier to install than the XFX Radeon HD 6870 due to it not requiring a vBios update (XFX card has idle state fan issue, causing it to spin at higher speeds than needed while in idle). The EVGA card is smaller and it fit in my full tower ATX case with room to spare. The card seems to run a lot cooler while idle as well as while under full load than the XFX Radeon HD 6870, I've noted difference to be about 10 degrees F lower while in idle and about 25 to 30 degrees cooler while under load. The EVGA card is based off an nVidia which also means that you will get full PhysX support which will have a noticeable improvement over the AMD GPUs in games that require or support the PhysX technology. The EVGA card ran stable with the out of factory setting and although it supports overclocking (obviously), I felt reluctant to play around with it as I've found no real need to do so. So far my wife has had no complaints when it comes to the card's performance with the games she plays, World Of Warcraft and Lineage 2. Both of her regular games are set to highest settings and both are running without any issues with frame rates. I had tested the card with The Elder Scrolls V - Skyrim myself and it was capable of running it on Ultra settings without any noticeable issues. Same goes for Starcraft 2, Divinity 2 - The Dragon Knight Saga and Borderlands.

P.S. The comparison between this EVGA GPU and XFX Radeon HD 6870 is not meant to upset anyone nor to downplay the quality or performance of neither of the products. It was merely my observation of the performance of the 2 items that I had used and was not done professionally nor under correct test conditions. The Radeon GPU is later generation and any comparison between the two should not be used to base your decision on whether to buy this card or not. This EVGA product is great in both performance and quality and is a great value for the money.

Novice installed this video card

My son's computer wasn't powerful enough to run his computer games so we decided to upgrade the video card. I decided on this card based on the price and reviews. Unfortunately I also realized that a larger power supply had to be installed. So I bought this video card and a 650 watt power supply to replace the 350 watt one in his computer. The power supply was no problem to install. I used a wrist anti-static wire before opening up the desktop. I removed the old power supply and placed in the new one. I connected all the leads and then plugged the video card into the slot. Then I closed up the desktop. I'm a bit worried about the single fan in the cabinet for ventilation, I'm thinking about putting in another one later. I connected the monitor to the video card, using an adaptor supplied with the card. Then I powered up and installed the video card drivers supplied with the card and rebooted. My son then started his game (Empire Total War) and it ran perfectly. The opening movie which had run very choppy previously ran very smoothly. The game play worked very well, and the actual battles which he couldn't run previously, he could now arrange his forces, direct his troops and everything as it was supposed to be. He's very happy now that he can utilize all the functions of his games.

PROS:
For the price, I thought this thing was amazing. I use it to transcode video from one format to another at 40 frames per second using badaboom software. Used to I could do it like at 10 or 9. I have a sony HD camcorder (I hate their .mts standard). I could never really utilize it because they put their video in such a protective format that I couldn't do anything with it untill now. GPU acceleration is the bomb. If you have windows 7, IE9, or need to transcode videos on the cheap, this video card is for you.

CONS: It's really big and barely fits in my standard case. It actually covers up my mini pci slot so look at the dimensions. The second thing I don't like about it is that it takes more power. Be sure your computer has an extra 6 pins worth of power (thats two hard drives) avalible and that it has at least a 650 watt power supply. If you're a novice and don't really know how to put one of these in, I suggest you do your homework or call up a friend that knows what's going on.
