Replacement for Dell XPS 8920 460w PSU

Since I had the computer half taken apart to replace the chassis fan, I decided to do a PSU upgrade as well. This gives me the capability to replace my GTX 1070 with a more beefy video card when I'm ready. The EVGA 750 PSU is well packed and comes with plenty of cables and even a test connector so you can power it up without having it connected to a motherboard. This is handy for verifying it is functioning and for possibly working on water cooled equipment when you don't want your CPU/GPU running.

For the 8920 specifically, I have just a couple of minor issues:
1. I have 2 SSDs mounted in a 2.5" rack and they are stacked tightly. I was barely able to get the SATA cables connected to both drives and I wasn't comfortable with the lateral pressure on the power connectors. I solved this by reusing an old Y-Sata connector where the wires attach to the back of the connector and not at a 90 degree angle at the side.

2. The DVD drive uses a 6-pin slimline SATA power connector and this PSU does not have that connector. I found a SATA to slimline connector for $2.25 on amazon, so that will address this problem.

3. Cable lengths are very generous and a bit too long for the compactness of the 8920. However, the spare cable easily packs in the PSU bay and remains out of the way. Anyone using this PSU on a mid tower should have plenty of cable to get to their components.

All said and done, installation was relatively easy, aside from having to remove and then reseat the impeller style CPU fan and heatsink. This was necessary to get access to the 4-pin ATX board connector. I had to remove this anyway for the chassis fan replacement I was performing at the same time. The PSU fan is virtually silent and can be turned to eco mode so it will only spin when needed. Now in idle mode, the only fan I hear is the impeller fan. I am quite happy with the quality of this PSU and look forward to many years of use.

You need a full college course to figure out the designations of the Evga Power Supplies. Obviously the watts ere self explanatory but what comes after that can drive you crazy. Nova G8, 8+ etc. does have some meaning. The internet has several sites that will explain the differences, but after reading several myself my quick answer would be they tell you who actually made the power supply FOR EVGA. They don't make the units themselves only market them. And there are apparently 6-8 different makers they use.

Not to say anything negative about this arrangement but it does get confusing when you want a 1000 watt supply, you know the level gold - but now you have to choose which actual maker?

As always EVGA makes another great PC component. The fan is very quiet while running at 80% capacity. Has plenty of power to run my 3080. The only reason I'm leaving 4 stars instead of 5 is because the eco mode on this is horrible. DO NOT use the eco mode while using this power supply. It will overheat and cause your pc to shut down. The fan does not pick up speed when under a heavier load like it should. After it cools down for awhile turn the eco mode switch off and reboot your PC. The fan will then turn on full power and be super loud. After a few minutes once completely cooled down the fan slowed down and stop blowing hot air out. Aside from this issue with their eco mode this has been a great psu!

You can hardly hear the psu running and it was very easy for me to upgrade from my old 650w psu to this. I upgraded because i got a second gpu for sli gaming and it came with all the new cords that i needed. It didnt come with an sli bridge like my old 650w psu did but that wasnt really an issue because i just bought one separately. I love evga products because they seem to handle any amount of abuse for years and never seem to slow down at all. I would absolutely buy one again if needed.

Previous power supply was a 2014 EVGA SuperNova 850G2. Fast forward to 2022 and it was easily chugging along with zero problems in it's 7 years of service. Installed new in a 4th gen i7 rig all the way up to a 10th gen i9 machine. Worked great. Still has warranty and it will be kept as a spare. I got the 850G6 to replace it for a 12th gen build. It's silent under load and provides ample power for 12700k and rtx 3070. It's smaller in size by 20 to 30 mm in length which gives me more room for cable management. Fired right up no issues. Hopefully I can get another 7 plus years!! If you're on the fence, just go for it. You wont get a better PS at this price point (on sale for 104.99) Even at full retail...it's a bargain.
EVGA has great customer service and an easy cross ship warranty program. Much easier to deal with vs Corsair, SeaSonic, etc.

As a power supply this is solid and reliable. This would get a 5 star rating across the board from me if not for issues with cable management. The 24 pin wire was too stiff with the shrink tubing and zip tie in a crucial area needing to bend. I had a few choices. 1 run the cable to the top of the case and be exposed from the top to the middle of the case ( Not a clean look ). 2 remove a drive mount panel along with the case logo but again more cable would be exposed then I would like. 3 purchase mod cable kit someday maybe 4. Option I chose - remove shrink tube and zip tie. flatten cable for a short area bend. Am I disappointed in my choice of power supply or the mod I chose not at all I'm very happy. Someday I might go with a cable mod kit to bling it up some

It's super quiet, even with Eco mode off, it stays cool under load, and delivers the promised power. I would probably recommend the same one to others, but with some caveats:

- The bright green light on the back cannot be turned off without cutting power entirely. I guess that's the "supernova" part, because it lights up my bedroom. Any permanent fix will void the warranty, so I covered mine with black electrical tape.

- One thing I hadn't considered when switching from a non-modular to a modular PSU is that the starting points of the cables are now very spread out. So instead of having one tidy bundle coming from the corner of my PSU, I have several bundles spaced out blocking airflow behind the PSU. Strapping them together doesn't make a difference because the plugs on the PSU are so far apart.

- I have read that using other SATA cables aside from the ones provided by EVGA will destroy your drives. This wouldn't be a huge deal if the EVGA ones were more flexible and/or offered a right-angle option. These cables are very stiff and stick out far from the drives, so if your drives are oriented horizontally the cables may get crushed by your case.
