When I was younger and building PCs, I tended to go cheap on motherboards and PSUs. I just wasn't interested in the parts of the PC that weren't that exciting. And a generic 500w PSU is fine, if you're not running super high-end CPUs and dual GPUs and don't need the more versatile interfaces and features of a high-end mobo, then those are certainly a places where you can save some money.
But as I've gotten older I've come to appreciate a good PSU. 80+ Platinum is more efficient, but perhaps not massively so. Even then, I have to spend a lot on electricity in my town in the summer, so every little bit is of interest to me.
This EVGA unit is pretty nice. Fully modular, good build quality and cable quality. Supports a variety of power configs for motherboards and peripherals. It is quiet and so far running pretty well after a burn-in of about a week. I'll report back if I have any issues, but it has a ten year warranty, so if all goes well it will be replaced long before it goes bad.
