WD has largely solved those issues with the EX2100 and the other NAS drives they recently released into the My Cloud line. This particular model fully saturates my gigabit network using the same exact disks that my other slower My Cloud uses.
It doesn't offer all that much new in the way of features from other My Cloud devices, but those features were pretty complete in the prior version.
A few notes for the uninitiated : this is a network attached storage device that must be connected to a network to work. You can't connect a computer directly to it via USB. I also recommend accessing the drive via a hard wired ethernet connection for the best performance.
This review is only about the actual NAS. I give it 5 stars so far.
The software (WD Smartware Pro) used to do the back up is SUPER SLOW! I have about 250 GB of files from Camera RAW to Photoshop and Illustrator files. It's been running for 24 hours over a gigabit network and it still is only half way done. I got frustrated and thought it was my network. So I stopped the backup on WD Smartware, opened up a folder on the NAS drive in explorer and just dragged and copied the same folder I was backing up and it finished 250 GB in one hour! Average about 77MB - 89MB a second over my network.
Now that is by no means a effective backup system but it proved that my network wasn't the bottleneck. In the WD Smartware interface, it also had about 120GB of files that it says it couldn't copy. You have to keep clicking Retry and they will eventually back up.
I was using this same software to do the backup from my laptop when it died but that was to a local USB 3.0 drive that was plugged into the computer and of course it was a little faster but I didn't expect the backup process being this slow over the network. On the Dashboard, it was showing a write speed of about 400-500k a second while backing up. I would expect at least 50MB a second over gigabit using the software.
The software is easy to use, has a nice interface and you can customize many elements of your backup but I wish it was a little faster.
1. Very easy to setup, intuitive menu
2. Performs very well when the two networking connections are bonded via the setup software
1. Volume sizes are not dynamically expandable as compared to a Netgear device. For example, once a 1.5TB volume has been made in a 3TB RAID-1 mode, the rest of the empty space can't be allocated in a RAID-1 mode, the only choice available JBOD in Spanning mode! The disks can be reformatted and the data restored if a larger volume is created first.
