Product Description
Can you complete the jigsaw puzzles, solve the riddles, and light the beacon before the ship crashes on the rocks? You trudge along the dark, rocky coast seeking shelter from the raging storm. Drenched to the bone, you look up to see a brilliant beam of light pierce the curtains of rain. A lighthouse! But suddenly and inexplicably, the light goes out. You glance out into the water and spot a ship. It is heading straight for the cliffs! You realize that it is up to you to race to the top of the lighthouse and turn it on again before the ship crashes on the cliffs! But many puzzling obstacles stand in your way. In this EXIT game, there are riddles within riddles, hidden within four jigsaw puzzles. Like other EXIT titles, The Deserted Lighthouse has no game board, but it also has no riddle cards. Instead, there are four jigsaw puzzles that you will find and assemble, one at a time. Each completed puzzle reveals a location containing more riddles to decipher. At the start of the game, all you have available to you is a decoder disk and the first set of puzzle pieces. Over the course of the game, you will find strange items that must be used to solve the riddles in the puzzles. The game ends when you have solved the last riddle and relighted the lighthouse’s beacon, saving the ship from sinking. Difficulty level: 4 of 5

Here are the things you need to know, firstly, well I LOVE lighthouses so this is coming close to being my favorite Exit game ever just for the box art and theme. Having a personal attachment to this theme the story of the raging storm, the lighthouse beacon going out and a ship off the shore needing saving from the rocky coast just absolutely put me in the best mood to play this entry in the series.
Beyond that though, for those of you knew to these games or just not a huge lighthouse nerd like me, again please know this is a high difficult puzzle. Do not try this as your first one, if you like the puzzle aspect of this one try the other one Sacred Temple first! I see may mentioning some dark printing on some of the clue locations makes things hard, and the shine of lights may even totally obscure what you are looking for. I challenge that by again saying this is a hard one from the start, the difficulty rating on box says so, and previous familiarity with this series has taught me that I must look at things from different angles, sometimes make sure bright overhead lights are not glaring on things, and lastly whether intentional or not I have to really study the colors and look for even the tiniest differences to find some clue solutions. It’s up to you to decide if hidden clues should be deeply hidden or in plain sight, and what experience you want from trying to solve them.
However this is not to say that I myself also did not get caught up a few times on this one, but as always I don't mind, the more of these you play the less likely a similar clue trick in the future will throw you for a loop. I absolutely love that in these two puzzle entries in the series that the clue deck of card hints is gone and it is instead an easily referenced appendix in the rulebook.
I'm happy with this one; I don't time myself or hold myself to the scoring system contained in the rulebook for how well I did. I assembled the puzzles at my leisure, and left this game on my table for several days and took exciting lighthouse vacations to this puzzling world when I had the time. I enjoy that I can set the pace and come back to one of these games a few different times and still am ready to work on solving it. My best advice is don't get discouraged if it is too hard; if it was too easy we'd get bored with these games and have that to complain about. There are a few I've done that I needed no clues and that felt GREAT, but I also find satisfaction in being stumped and needing help.

What we hated:
the jigsaw puzzle rooms are so dark - it is very hard to see clues
The puzzles themselves were a bit of a stretch
The story was not engaging and even had holes in it
What we loved:
Being done and putting it in the recycle/trash bins (harsh but true)
Seriously, if you have done every other Exit game and must try this one then go right ahead BUT you have been warned that this one isn’t fun. If you have only played a few Exit games, go find any other one and enjoy it. The creators really are BRILLIANT, however, even very creative people have off days (this game is an example of that).

The handbook is poorly written. No where does it tell you to keep the jigsaw puzzles together. If you have ever done an EXIT game you know you don’t need the clues you’ve already used - so once we put together one jigsaw puzzle and solved the “puzzle” we took the jigsaw apart and started the next one. BIG MISTAKE and I wished they would have told us.
The jigsaw puzzles are way, way, way to dark. There are clues on them you literally can’t see - numbers, letters, pictures
There are “puzzles” (two of them) that are so convoluted they are impossible to solve. I would challenge anyone if they told me they didn’t need hints to help them. We don’t mind hard puzzles but not impossible ones. (What the heck was up with making the paper boat??)
Finally, there was a huge error in one of the puzzles which led to much disappointment as even when we read how to solve it it still didn’t make sense.
This has to be the WORST EXIT game. I do NOT recommend it at all.
Those familiar with standard Exit Games will find some things familiar here (the code disc) but other things in 'The Deserted Lighthouse' are very different (no cards, no book). All rooms are played out via 4 jigsaws, which you complete one by one as the game progresses. As you complete puzzles and solve clues you'll receive further documents to help you on your way, either providing new puzzles or evidence, or directing you to start a new jigsaw.
We really enjoyed this game. It took us a little while to get going at first, but once you get into the game the experience is very similar to the previous games but with added fun. We picked the harder of the two games on the market but we should have tried the easier one first, as we did need a few hints, but we'll go back and play that one soon.
I particularly liked that several of the puzzles rely on/use the jigsaws themselves as part of the solution, it's not just that you complete them and look at the picture every time. Once you get your head around that it helps going forward to complete the further puzzles.
The games are a bit longer than previous games due to the jigsaw aspect, we completed the game in around 2 hours. I'm sure others could do it quicker. I'd recommend doing some of the smaller games first if you're a beginner to get used to the process.
Overall experience was terrible. It felt painful to finish the game. Also, if I wanted to do jigsaw puzzles for 1/4 of the game, I would a jigsaw puzzle instead of a locked room. The other puzzles in the game were not very fun. Overall, would not recommend and we do not plan to do any other locked room in this series.
