The biggest mod that I would highly recommend hands down as an absolute necessity is to get better props that don't break if you sneeze on them like the king kongs that come with the drone and maybe to get a new video transmitter picked out for when the right angle reverse polarity SMA connector falls off of the back. Personally I highly recommend the Tri-Blade 5045 V2 Propellers by XSOUL (AISN: B01GWWIV6E) I have buried these things in the ground from crashing so hard and I still haven't broken my first set. I bent them all to hell but I just keep straightening them back out with no issues.
For the video transmitter you could just desolder the crazy SMA connector they put on the included transmitter and replace it, but I just bought a whole new transmitter with a standard polarity straight connector. (AISN: B01LX7JNA2) and antennae to go with it (AISN: B01J9N0HGK)
Oh another huge issue I had was removing the stock props every time they shattered because there are little motor protection shrouds on each motor that force you to use a crude tool to jam the motor so you can loosen and tighten the nuts on the motor, these guards that are supposed to protect the motor ended up causing me to damage the motor wingdings myself through constant struggling to change props. I ended up buying a whole new set of motors off of banggood for $30 which kind of highlights the benefit of this drone. You can destroy anything on it and only spend about $30 to fix it, but a much simpler solution is to take the motor guards off as soon as you get it, but make sure that you have different mounting screws to put the motors back on as the M3 by 10mm screws will go all the way into the wingdings if you don't have the motor mounts there as a spacer. M3 x 8mm screws (included in AISN: B01I74TTWU) are a perfect fit without the motor guard. Once you take the guard off you can change the props my simply gripping the motor housing with your fingers for backup while using a normal wrench on the retaining nut.
On to the software side of things, It comes flashed with betaflight which is an app that has to run on google chrome. I personally think its stupid that it isn't a standalone program, but 90% of the quad hobbyist seem to like it so nothing that can be done about that. Cleanflight is an earlier alternative that is basically the same, but you would need to flash your flight controller to use it instead. If you thought you could just get this drone in the mail and it would be legitimately ready to fly then you are technically correct, but before you get the chance to use a full battery charge you will install betaflight and start tweaking settings. Youtube helps a lot here. Also make sure to write down any factory settings before you change them in case you need to change them back.
Also if you do end up changing the motors you will probably cut the heat shrink off the ESCs like I did. I found out shortly after that the carbon fiber frame of this thing is very conductive and I shorted out my ESCs so I'm waiting for replacements now. You can find much better professional videos on youtube showing what kinds of speeds this thing is capable of, but I attached a video of mine flying about a half inch off a wood floor from when I was still learning. It looks completely different from the picture because I had already destroyed and replaced half of it which is why I was keeping it low.
Note: The AISN numbers in my description can be searched on amazon to find the exact products I am talking about.
