Perfect for long trips traveling carry-on

I bought my Eagle Creek Load Hauler backpack for a three-month winter trip to Norway, and I am soooo happy I did. The pack was the perfect size for carry-on (Norwegian Airlines) and held everything I needed without expanding the zipper. We make this trip every year, but this year I decided I wanted to try to organize and de-stress luggage aspect for myself. The Load Hauler volume capacity is great, but it is wide open on the inside. So to help with organization, I also used one set of the Pack-It Specter Cubes: the larger cube helped keep my fluffy sweaters in a compact roll size along with my shirts, the medium was for camis/bras/tights, and the small was for undies/fem-stuff. Then around the cubes inside the pack's main compartment I had a couple jeans, a couple skirts, a big flannel, my big scarf, and tote with socks, and my knit hat, neck warmer, small scarf, and gloves tucked nicely into the outer top pocket, with all my toiletries in the outer lower pocket. Since the Load Hauler is so lightweight, even fully loaded with all my gear and weighed together with my small shoulder bag (with two books, our travel docs, phone, snacks, chapsticks, headphones, and pens), I was under the 10kg weight allowance for carry-on with Norwegian, thus eliminating my stress of checking my bag and worrying if it will make it (I hate shopping, so the idea of having my bag go missing and needing to shop for new things is really...ugh...). As a 5ft5in woman (no longer a spring-chicken and with mild scoliosis), I was a bit concerned about wearability and comfort with travel backpacks since I hadn't used large packs since my college traveling days, but I knew I was tired of hauling suitcases, however small, around airports and through cobblestone and/or snow-covered streets walkways. So I did a LOT of research before making my purchase, and I am very happy with the choice I made (in the end my decision was made due to a slightly more squared shape to the Load Hauler's main compartment versus the tapered shape of my second choice). My husband had been very skeptical about how the pack was going to work out, but about halfway through our trip he started being very envious of how easily and comfortably I got around "fully loaded" wherever we went - through the deep snow, all the public transport, and tucked into the backseat of a rather small car - and has decided he now wants a Load Hauler for himself as well. I hope this information has been helpful to those out there looking to meet their travel packing needs...

After countless hours of researching all kinds of brands and designs, I ordered the Load Hauler and the Eagle Creek Converge bag for my husband to choose from. Though the Converge is an excellent weekender for the businessman, it didn't fit my husband's needs. However, he was THRILLED with the Load Hauler. Functional, durable, smartly designed and with an attractively rugged appearance, the Load Hauler was the perfect bag to hit the road on adventures or travel through the airport on a casual business trip. Pairing this bag and the ebags pack-it system, my husband packed a week's worth of a variety of clothes (from work out to business casual) in the Load Hauler. Though it fits as a carry-on, my husband checked the bag and it came through a little dirtier but still intact. My husband loved this bag so much he ordered me the blue one!

The cinch straps were a big deciding factor on this bag for us as many other versions of weekend bags don't provide them. When we don't want to pack to capacity, we can cinch down the extra space and not have to deal with a floppy/bulky half-filled bag. We also prefer a NON-rolling duffel so loved that this bag doesn't use up space or weight on wheels. All in all, it fits our needs perfectly.

Zipper ripped FIRST use!!!

No kidding... the very first time I packed this bag two inches of the the zipper tore away from the fabric because it had been improperly sewn at the factory. I was leaving for an international trip the next day after it arrived so I hand stitched it just to get by. Other than the dysfunctional stitching the material was sturdy and held up well to a lot of abuse. Carrying it as a backpack was very painful and I would not recommend doing that for any length of time with this bad. I regret choosing it and it is absolutely NOT worth a high price point.

Eagle Creek discontinued this Load Hauler, but you can still find it for sale various places online. After using so many different bags over the years, this is by far the best one for traveling that I've found. The reason is very simple: This bag is the largest capacity (49L expandable to 57L) bag that can be carried onto a flight, and it weighs next to nothing (for a bag this size). Nothing else comes close. I pair this with compression packing cubes and can fit just a ridiculous amount of stuff in it. The bag is unstructured, so it works best when it is fully packed.

Technically speaking, when stuffed completely full (but not expanded) this bag might just barely be technically too big for some airlines, but I've never been questioned about it, and I haven't had any problems getting it into an overhead bin. (The only problem are the budget airlines that actually weigh your carry-ons.) The only downside is that it can get heavy and when carrying it as a backpack it can get uncomfortable after long periods. But I mostly have to just haul it around for maybe 30 minutes at a time as I walk to train stations or airports.

The replacement for this is the Gear Warrior, which is heavier by several ounces despite being smaller (43L). When you're traveling for a month at a time with one bag, those extra 6 liters come in handy.

So buy it while you can, and enjoy as much space as you can possibly get without standing around waiting for checked luggage.

The Handy Dandy Load Hauler

Ladies and Gents, meet the Handy Dandy Load Hauler! I've taken this guy on a trip to Europe and a couple of trips to through the US since I got it. It sizes down really nice and compact with the compression straps and has convenient outer pockets for the stuff you need quick access to. Even at full size, it fits pretty easily into overhead storage bins.
On another note, I didnt find the tote strap particularly useful as it becomes awkward to carry around, but the blue handle is useful quick shifts or as an easy grip handle. Also, its really not the bag to take with you on a backpacking trip. After 20-30 mins, you start feeling the pressure on your shoulders. But for quick moves, this is the one for you!

I bought a Lowe Alpine AT carry on bag for my other and thought I'd try a different brand for myself...quite disappointed with the feel and versatility of this bag compared to the Lowe Alpine which is much more robust has more padding and more useful pockets. The two external pockets on this pack are an ideal opportunity for someone to empty your valuables without you realising! The Lowe Alpine looks neater and more slick is easier to handle, yes it weighs a little more but with the pockets hidden close into the pack I feel much more confident carrying that than this. Big difference between European and American quality. I'm sending mine back for a refund.
