High quality, comfortable; trade tech features for some space

Used for 2 week trip to Europe. Comfortable as a backpack for walking through train stations, airport, to and from hotel through the city. Definitely not a full backpack for true hiking. Not as roomy for general packing as the Eagle Creek Load Hauler, but a more comfortable backpack setup (I tried, but returned, the Load Hauler, as the gear hauler was more comfortable as a backpack). Also has a very roomy "shoe" storage bag, separating dirty shoes/clothes from other luggage. Adds separate storage for laptop and tablet, if you need it, but that reduces your available packing space. If you aren't taking a laptop with you, then maybe the Load Hauler is all you need. Overall, great quality, solid, comfortable backpack convertible luggage.

4.5 Stars - better than a 4 star bag, but with a couple of issues. This is a travel backpack, not really a hiking one. Used this for multiple trips including a 10 day trip across France, Italy, and Switzerland - one intra-Europe flight and four train segments. Nice looking bag that is great for train travel. Traveled with 13.3" laptop and iPad mini. The ability to "hide" the straps is nice, changing it from a backpack to a standard travel bag. One clear (scratch your head, what were they thinking) downside is not water bottle holder. You can find attachments to create one. Also, the zipper to hold dirty shows at the bottom is not super secure. The only other possible issue is the material may be susceptible to being cut. I've only carried on so no issue, but I could see it happening eventually. But, these drawbacks would not deter me from recommending this Gear Hauler.

A Good Upgrade

I had and used the first version of this quit extensively for trips around Asia, but time takes it's toll, and I needed to replace it. According to the specs, this version 2 is the same size and volume as the old one. But when I got it, it was clearly a little smaller (the new one fit inside the old one). After almost returning it, I decided to keep it and give it a chance, and it has worked out well. It's a little more durable (especially the zippers), and hence I'm a little more comfortable packing it to the limit. It could do with one less pocket in front, and a little less padding, to make things a little more streamlined. But nothing's perfect, and I'm ready for my next trip.

I never travel with a backpack, but wanted to try to use one for a NY trip as a test run. I loved using this bag as a backpack and I loved using the one shoulder strap. It is durable and lightweight. I especially felt comfortable walking through the city to my hotel with the secure zippers against my back. Depending on how much you are traveling with, I did see where a waist strap would add comfort. Overall it is definitely going to be the way I travel in the future.

Better than expected for my needs

First, I have Eagle Creek items almost 30 years old that I still use, so I was curious if they would still live up to my expectations. Second, I purchased this particularly based on how light it was.

That said, I was very happy with the purchase. Very. It is very light yet (just 2lbs or so.), and so well designed for travel function. The backpack strap pocket was brilliant (stores the straps) not to mention how the design takes advantage of padding for your back while using a lighter (but seemingly strong) fabric on the outer portion. I shall see how it holds up on the road, but so far it is better than anticipated.

I used this pack for a one bag trip through Italy. Fit easily in airplane and train overhead storage. The image you see for this pack is actually the part that is against your back. If you have some odd shaped or bulky items, you may feel them in your back a bit. As with any pack, if you are wearing it for a while you will start to feel it in the shoulders. The outside of this pack is pretty cool. There are no pockets exposed on the outside, so it can help keep things secured.

Another great product from Eagle Creek. This is my second gear hauler - the first is 10 years old and still going strong. However, I was interested in the laptop compartment that the new one offers. The new model is a little different from the older one - shorter and doesn't have the outer shell wet compartment; however, the new one appears to be the same quality and overall, mostly similar. Looking forward to having both for different types of travels. I'm convinced this is one of the best designed bags - I've travelled all over Europe and Asia using just this one bag. Pair it with packing cubes and you can definitely fit all you need for a trip. I'm thankful to have the added laptop compartment and the extra storage/organizing features. This helps this become a business trip bag, instead of a practical camping bag.

As a frequent traveller, this bag has been well suited to specific short haul trips where I use this bag as a carry on, yet require maximum possible capacity for the size. It can also be adapted to be both a suitcase/carry bag or backpack. There are plenty of well placed handles and gear attachments which helps with general handling and use. Separate compartments help to separate any important items and electronics from the rest of the luggage, providing me with plenty of packing options. My only gripe is that it would be handier if the smaller compartment could open a little further. When not in use, the backpack straps can be put away out of sight which is handy. As this is not a trolley bag, this product will not be ideal for some users but, without a built in trolley assembly, extra space becomes available which is what I found appealing. As a backpack, it is less suited for walking any big distances, but effective for getting around stations, airports, on and off public transport and for city/urban use. This can also be an advantage when you need to move fast up and down steps and escalators for example. When used this way, the bag becomes very secure as all the important pockets and zips are not facing the people around you, leaving just a blank surface at the back. For those trips where I don't need to check in luggage or require a trolley bag, this bag has so far proved to be a versatile piece of kit.

Dieser Reiserucksack ist fantastisch. Hab schon über 20 Flüge mit dem gemacht und ist auch der Familienrucksack für den Strand. Es gehen ohne Ende Sachen rein, er ist handepäcktauglich im Flieger und die ausgeklügelte Konstruktion mit dem Laptopfach am Rücken ist die beste Diebstahlsicherung, die ich bisher gesehen habe. Er trägt sich bequem auch lange Zeit auf dem Rücken und der Stoff wirkt unverwüstlich trotz der dünnen Stärke. Baubedingt können schwere Sachen beim tragen im Rucksack verrutschen, hier sollte man korrekt packen (schweres nach unten). Mein TNF Duffel ist kein Vergleich; der fängt nur noch Staub seitdem ich diese Tasche habe.

Ich bin sehr zufrieden mit dem Stauraum und auch der Moeglichkeit, die Träger zu verstauen, wenn man den Rucksack verstauen möchte oder auch nur eine "cleane" Tasche im Zimmer abstellen mag. Einen Stern Abzug fuer die Tatsache, dass keinerlei Unterteilung im Innenraum vorgesehen ist und man hier definitiv mit Packing Cubes arbeiten muss, ein / zwei kleine Innentaschen wären ideal! Ausserdem fehlt der waist strap, welchen ich besonders auf längeren Trips durch die Städte Europas gerne hätte, um die Schultern ein wenig zu entlasten. Ansonsten aber ein toller Rucksack.

Grundsätzlich gut durchdacht. Allerdings war der erste Rucksack, der mir geliefert wurde, nicht sauber genäht, so dass der Reißverschluss an einem überstehenden Stück Stoff eingezwickt wurde und hängen blieb. Ging zurück und ich warte auf Ersatz.

Update: Tauschlieferung war einwandfrei. Auf der Homepage des Hersteller wird der Rucksack jedoch immer mit dem kleinen Vorhängesschloss für die Reißverschlüsse gezeigt. Das war bei der Lieferung nicht dabei.
