That's why I bought this Eagle Creek Specter version to try instead of my mesh bag. The Specter description said it was super-light, and that's true. I like that part. But it has more stiffness and structure than I hoped. So, it doesn't crunch down very easily. Unless it's very full (in which case it would be that full size anyway), you're going to lose some packing efficiency.
I'm also not too thrilled with the pockets. I bought this because I got tired of having to dig for things in my mesh pouch. So having multiple pockets should be good. This bag has one pocket on the bottom, and two pockets on the top. I expected there to be a shallow pocket and a deep pocket in the top part, but they are both deep. So, there isn't a good place for tiny things. Also, it's a little hard to describe, but I feel like the pockets aren't as accessible as I would like. They feel like they don't open wide enough for their depth, or something like that. It's hard to describe, but I feel like I'm having to dig down through a small hole into something deep. That's just my feeling, and it's subtle and very subjective. Many people would say the pockets are fine, so take my comments with a grain of salt.
Another odd thing is this sense that the pockets are too small for the overall size of the kit. It feels like there's a significant amount of room between the sides when you fold it together, as if I want to store things there (like I would put something between the pages of a book when I'm closing it), rather than in the pockets. Again, this is a subtle subjective feeling.
There's nothing technically wrong with this kit, and I struggle to justify why I don't like it. But for whatever reason, I don't really like it. I'm wondering whether or not to return it. It's pretty expensive, so for this price I should love it. And I don't.
There's a semi-stiff rectangular pad on each side to give it that rectangular structure. I'm tempted to try cutting out that pad so it's just thin material with some pockets in it. That would allow it to scrunch down, since it wouldn't have any structure. But then it might be a hard-to-use mess when it's hanging. And obviously if I cut it up, I can't return it if I still don't like it. So, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet.
