Use your 2.5" SATA drive over eSATA or USB

The Eagle Tech case allows for SATA transfers at up to 3Gbps, which on paper is six times faster than USB2. It also does USB2 transfers to make it compatible with just about any recent decent computer.

Initially, the door would not close on the case. The Hitachi drive that I use may not be a perfect match for this enclosure because the drive would not mate with the internal SATA connector. Jiggling the drive inside the case did not help and there is no way to have seen what was interfering. After failing to mate the drive with the internal connector on several tries, I was tempted to force the door closed, but sanity prevailed and the eventual solution worked every time for me. Orienting the drive case vertically like a grocery sack and allowing gravity to help seat the drive was all it took. I've removed the drive a few times to mate it to a computer that only has internal eSATA connectors and the gravity assist mating mode has solved the mating problem with my Hitachi drive. It would have been great if this kit came with a SATA to eSATA cable so that I could just leave the drive in the enclosure when the computer only has internal SATA connectors.

Please note that when using the eSATA interface, you must also provide power to the case with the dual USB to power cable. For me, I only used one of the two USB connectors on the cable and I have transferred several TBs of data without error. I've been using the case for a few weeks without any issues on a HP HDX18 laptop with a combo USB/eSATA connector. The case, cables, and pouch seem durable and the pouch keeps the kit tidy and helps to ensure that I won't misplace the cables.

There is a blue LED on one side that illuminates when powered from the mini-USB cable, or from the dual-USB power cable. There is also a red LED that flashes with activity. The drive has four stick-on rubber feet that help to keep it stable on the table, but the feet are of the type that usually peel off after a few months use.

The metal case thermally couples to the drive very well. After several hours of heavy use, the case was perhaps 10 degrees warmer than room temperature, and when I powered down and removed the drive, it too was just barely warmer than room temperature. The ad claims that the case is Tool-less, but you'll need either the provided key or a straightened paper clip to get the case open.

great solution to what to do with your laptop hard drive

I upgraded my 3-year old laptop hard drive to a faster, bigger hybrid drive that improved the performance and boot times considerably. But I needed a way to clone my original HD to the new one. This device was very handy for that. I put the new drive into this enclosure, connected it to the laptop, and ran Norton Ghost to clone the drive to the new one. Then I swapped the two drives, and all is well. Now I have the original 250 GB laptop HD in the external enclosure to use for backups and extra data space.

One of the coolest things about this device is that it includes its own USB cable and plug, which neatly stows in a groove that runs around the outer edge. No external power is required; it's supplied by the USB connection.

Fast, large capacity, easy to handle and connect

I bought this to be my main backup storage for digital images and Lightroom databases while I am on the road. Due to its large capacity, I also keep my complete music collection on it, enabling me to listen to any music I feel like. The built-in USB cable works well and gives me about a 17 mb/s transfer rate. This compares to a 30 mb/s rate when using the provided eSATA cable. However, the eSATA cable does not provide power and still requires an *additional* (but provided) USB cable that plugs into a separate power receptacle. Why they couldn't use the built-in USB cable as the power supply is a mystery to me...

The drive is light-weight, small, well built and so far has worked very well. It has two LEDs built in, a red one while it is connecting or as an error indicator and a blue one to indicate normal operation, both blinking during transfer. The drive mounts very fast on Windoze 7 as soon as it is connected.

It would be nice if they made or offered a sturdy and cushioned carrying case - I feel like I need to wrap it in something to protect it during transport.

Excellent purchase. I was able to plug it in and it worked the first time.
The enclosure did exactly what I needed it to do. I was able to connect a new drive to my laptop via the eSata port and clone the existing drive to the new and larger drive.
The only note for usage was that I tried to use a powered USB port to provide power and the PC would not recognize the drive. As soon as I plugged the USB connector to one of the PC's USB ports for power, the drive was immediately recognized by the PC and it worked.
Delivery of the device was right on time as predicted.

Good for portable Linux

I purchased this eSATA enclosure, with necessary cables, to work with a large capacity HDD in conjunction with a Lenovo Z560 laptop equipped with an eSATA port. When used in the eSATA mode, it essentially boots and runs a Linux OS as though the HDD was inside of the computer. This gives me the advantage of being able to run Linux without touching (or in any way changing) the "MS Windows 7" internal HDD; while keeping the Linux OS and all related files separate from the host computer's internal HDD. The product seems well made and performs as expected.

You have to use both the eSATA port and cable and a separate USB power cable to achieve performance speeds roughly equivalent to internal HDD speeds. You are also wise to insure good cooling air circulation all the way around the unit's aluminum case skin. Typically, the case's skin temperature will rise to about 15 F above ambient if cooled by still air on all surfaces.

For some persons, the approximately 2 feet long, 2 cables set-up might not be acceptable; but such is not a problem for myself about 90% of the time. When the two long cables are a problem, and I need to run Linux rather than "MS Windows 7", I can still boot and run from the much slower USB 2.0 connection using only the short, built in USB 2.0 cable.

All in all, USB 3.0 seems to be replacing eSATA. However, if you have a computer with an OEM eSATA port, eSATA is likely going give you better speed and fewer problems than trying to run Linux from a 34 mm Express Card adapter with a USB 3.0 jack. Several Express Card to USB 3.0 adapter vendors advise that their adapters are only compatible with "Windows" OS.
