The Eagle Type I galvanized steel safety can with funnel is used to store, transport, and dispense flammable liquids safely and comes with a funnel to facilitate filling and pouring. The can is made of 24-gauge galvanized steel, which is resistant to rust, dents, and certain chemicals. Gauge is a measure of thickness (the lower the gauge, the thicker the material). The powder-coated finish resists scratches, chipping, fading, and other wear. A flame arrestor helps prevent liquids inside the can from igniting and keep flames from spreading. The spout cap self-closes to help prevent leaks or spills. The cap assembly opens automatically to vent internal vapors. A trilingual safety warning label alerts users to the can's contents. The funnel is made of HDPE (high-density polyethylene), which is resistant to dents, punctures, and certain chemicals. This safety can may be available in different colors (blue for kerosene, green for oil or other combustibles, red for gasoline, or yellow for diesel) to separate, store, and identify different liquids. This product is FM Approved as a safety can used for handling flammable liquids in quantities of 5 gallons or less. It complies with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Standard 1910.106 for the safe storage and handling of flammable liquids. It meets National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Code 30, which provides safeguards to reduce the hazards associated with the storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids. It is Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Listed and meets UL safety requirements.
Hazardous storage cans are used to safely store, transport, and dispense flammable or hazardous liquids. They are typically made of polyethylene, 24-gauge galvanized steel, or 24-gauge stainless steel. (Gauge is a measure of thickness; the lower the gauge, the thicker the material.) Hazardous storage cans come in a variety of styles, such as Type I cans, which have a single spout for filling and pouring, and Type II cans, which have a flexible metal hose for pouring and a second opening for filling. They are often color-coded for different liquids (for instance, red cans for gasoline, blue cans for kerosene, yellow cans for diesel fuel, or green cans for oil). Other common features include flame arrestors, which help prevent the liquid inside the can from igniting, and seam welds, which help prevent leaks. Certain hazardous storage cans are FM Approved, and many meet National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards for the storage and handling of flammable liquids. Hazardous storage cans are used in a variety of commercial and industrial environments and can also be suitable for home use.
Eagle Manufacturing Company manufactures industrial safety, haz-mat, and storage products that meet International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards for quality assurance. The company, founded in 1894, is headquartered in Wellsburg, VA.

This can isn't ideal since apparently they have decided we can't have a separate fill opening.Getting gas into the can requires take the plastic funnel off and pulling back the spring loaded gas pour cap while filling. That being said once the gas is in the can you can fuel your machines safe in the knowledge that unless you try to gas a hot engine (and are careless) that you'll be able to complete the task without setting yourself afire.
1. The plastic handle pulled off on the first use. The rivet was not closed and slid out.
2. The can is not completely painted. There are bare metal spots around the spout, spout lid, metal handle attachment welds and on the handle.
This is a very disappointing purchase from a company typically known for quality products.
Update: April 27 2013
I sent an e-mail with pictures for Eagle after receiving the can. They sent a replacement can. The handle on the replacement can was installed correctly but the paint was still not applied to the entire can. There were gaps in the paint all over the can. I'm happy to buy american products but this workmanship is ridiculous.
When you really look at it they are not that much more than the cheap polyethylene crap with the B.S. CARB compliant trash they try to pan of on us as a nozzle.
The funnel on this can snaps on and off and if you cut a whole just in the right place, you can stick the gasoline pump nozzle thru the hole and fill it w/out removing the funnel..
You can make it a one handle operation just open the spring loaded lid and stick the nozzle in thru the hole. you can let go of the cans handle then, the nozzle keeps the thing open.
The other hack that I think improves this already great product is I took some 1/4" hose and cut six 2' pieces and split them long ways.. I then mixed up some epoxy putty and rolled it up and stuck it into the hose in the slit. I then pushed that epoxy filled chunk of hose on to the bottom bead in six places then I mashed and pinched it real well so that now the can doesn't sit on the concrete.
This makes some pretty good feet for the can.
The reason you really need this can, besides the quality, price, durability and Made in USA is the SAFETY OF YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES!!.
If you stay with those plastic cans you will go thru them and pay for several of these cans anyway so don't be a wus.
YOU WANT THIS CAN, .... YOU NEED THIS CAN.
You read it right, six years, still working like new. Only maintenance is making sure the funnel is clean before using it. No leaks, no splash over, fits EVERY application. I use this mainly on the ZTR or to take gas to someone in trouble. I've never left these in the sun for more than a few minutes.
Of course while in the service I used the heavy duty cans with flex spouts, and those are the best, but very hard to find these days. So I've had to make do for years and years with the plastic ones that you have to take off the spout to fill, and they always leak either there or at the "safety valve" they were putting on the spout tip for a while. I'm testifying tomorrow in a deposition about one of those, you can find my review of it if you look for the lowest rated gas cans...haha. That one not only leaked while using and filling, it split along the handle at the top and exhausted fumes all over the shed all day every day, and sloshed gas on my hands when I carried it, and then poured gas out of the split onto whatever I was filling... forget that~!!
But I've had two of these Eagle cans for over two years now, and they get a lot of use and store in a southwest Texas storage shed that gets really hot in the summer... so these metal cans help give me at least a little feeling of being safer. I've never had a spill with these, and taking off the funnel is no problem when filling ... for me anyway, apparently some other reviewers don't realize all they went through with other types of cans when filling, like the ratcheting safety clips and the rubber washers that fall off and then the can leaks...Read more ›
