Editorial Reviews

Raven presents the first CD release of two original HELEN REDDY albums recorded for Capitol: Ear Candy (1977) and We'll Sing in the Sunshine (1978). This follows the successful 2-for-1 reissues on Raven of I Am Woman/Long Hard Climb, Love Song for Jeffrey/Free and Easy, I Don't Know How to Love Him/Helen Reddy and No Way to Treat a Lady/Music, Music. By the late-1970s - with three US #1 hit singles including the perennial 'I Am Woman' and a further ten US Top 40 chart placements to her credit - Reddy was firmly established as an international superstar. She's remembered as one of the most popular female singers of the decade and her recorded legacy remains a flawlessly produced collection of easy listening pop and big soulful ballads. Produced by LA scenester / song writer Kim Fowley, Ear Candy continued her chart domination, yielding her Top 20 hit version of 'You're My World'. 'Long Distance Love' and 'The Happy Girls' featured exuberant dance-pop while 'Aquarius Miracle' and 'Midnight Skies' continued her tradition of soaring, romantic balladry. We'll Sing in the Sunshine, again produced by Fowley, contained songs by Jeff Lynne (the grandiose 'Poor Little Fool'), Lennon & McCartney (the rollicking 'One After 909'), Gale Garnett (the stately 'We'll Sing in the Sunshine') and Alan O'Day (the enticing 'Catch My Breath'). With superb quality audio, detailed liner notes and color booklet, this excellent release is a must for fans of sophisticated, soulful pop

These two albums were released in the late 70's when Helen Reddy was an established music star. Kim Fowley was the producer who took a departure from his usual artists to produce these albums. Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra wrote 'Poor Little Fool' and is one of her best songs. The singles, 'You're My World' and 'We'll Sing in the Sunshine' are two great covers of sixties hits. Every song on these albums is worth listening to. Thanks to Raven Records, these are now available.

I had bought the orignal albums when they were released in the late seventies and listeneing to them on this prisitne CD brought back all the artistry of this talented performer. Helen Reddy was truly an eclectic talent and these two albmus showcase her range admirably by highlighting many different styles and music genres. In fact, it is even difficult to imagine other female vocalists being able to credibly straddle such a rich tapestry of songs with such consumate ease. Special kudos to the arrangements as well whioh are truly noteworthy and at times soaring (I am thinking of the Steve Wonder tune "If it's Magic") allowing the listener to savour Beach Boys pastiche, torch ballads , French chansons and a memorable Electric Ligght Orchestra composition written especially for her.
Definitely worth listening to time and time again.

"Ear Candy" is one of my favorite Helen Reddy albums. I've waited many years for the cd release and glad I have it. Her version of "If It's Magic" is done with great musical arrangement.

Highly recommended for Helen Reddy fans and a fine addition to my Helen Reddy library.

I have wanted these two cds for a long time and finally they are here. I purchased both back at the time of release in the 70s, and like both very much. Listening to ear candy today- i feel it the stronger of the two releases. Song selection is superior and better array of sound. I felt then and still do the song baby im a star is just awful and a total ego driven song on helen part (sometimes a record comp has to say no) Sing in the sunshine is a nice collection of songs and just a little bit a disco here and there-my feeling is there was just not a great stand out song on the record, but still enjoy listening to the cd. Helen reddy was one of my favorite singer when these records were released and she hold up well even after 30 years, and i think that sums up pretty well for her and the listener.

Love these two albums more than any of the other 10 she did. Definitely her peak although commercially it was downhill from here. Earle Mankey doing that sumptious production.

Wish they could get repromoted and that a whole new generation could get to hear them?

i remember as a kid running out and buy the Ear Candy lp and coming home and listening to the tracks and look at everything about the cover and lp as we did back then. Youre My World was the hit on the radio but i always loved The Happy Girls and never understood why it wasnt a bigger hit, i just loved it so. and the lp had this french influence on some of the songs that i thought was unique even back then. now all these yrs later to close my eyes and hear a clear remastered version of the lp i can hear just how unique those songs were and i actually have new respect for Helen and what she did with them. they hold up very well and i actually love every song were back then i just thought besides the hits the other songs were just ok. and also with Well Sing came out my best friend and i went to see Helen in Ft Lauderdale and she introduced her 'new single' 'ready or not' and we were all blown away!! the crowd loved it and i thought 'well here comes another big hit for helen!' and then it was released and fizzled. i thought 'hmm' and i think they released 'lady of the evening' but that died a quick death and i think 'well sing' was released and did ok. but now hearing all the other songs on the cd, they all have a new 'freshness' to my ears and i love them! these lps on cd have just become better with age for me so i'm very glad i purchased this cd and will treasure it for what it is and for all the memories that came flooding back to my memory banks upon listening to it all these yrs ago. and btw, that 'best friend' from 10th grade who saw the Helen concert with me is still my best friend to this day and he visited and we talked bout that concert lol on his next visit i think we will b listening to this cd for 'old times sake' and have a great time! thank you Helen we still love and miss you :)
