"Forester (The Highlander's Bride), a champ at crafting feisty and independent Regency-era women, has outdone herself..." - Publishers Weekly
"Once again, Forester earns top marks for her spunky heroines and their men who need to be taught a thing or two (usually at the expense of their pride, and by said spunky heroines). Lady Katherine Ashton and her twin brother, Robert Ashton, Earl of Darington were essentially orphaned at birth and later sent to debtor’s prison at age 12. Desperate to restore the family coffers, they resorted to questionable means. So questionable in fact, that Kate knows she will never be considered “proper”.
John Arlington, Earl of Wynbrook has known Kate and Robert for years. In truth, he saw Kate as beneath him in his early years. But following the death of his parents in a tragic accident, he became a different man and began to see Kate in a new light.
When Kate and her brother are plagued by break ins and robbery attempts, John insists they stay with his family. He’s simply protecting Kate, as is his duty as a gentleman. At least, that’s what he keeps telling himself.
Kate was a fascinating heroine. She had endured a horrible childhood and knew nothing of affection or love. Her trials had hardened her. “By expecting the absolute worst out of life, Kate was immune to the sting of disappointment, for she lived it every single day.” Yet she had a fierce loyalty to those she loved. I think what I loved most about her was her lack of a “filter”. She had lived such a different life from those in society, that her words and actions were often not what one would expect. She was tougher and smarter than most men. Still, she finds herself unworthy of being a proper lady.
John changed for the better after he became Earl of Wynbrook. He was still the charming, somewhat arrogant man he had always been but his responsibilities had reformed him. He is baffled by Lady Kate. She “defied classification, she was a lady, daughter of an earl, but hardly acted like one. Yet she was so reserved and refined, she did not not act like one either”. She is the most unusual woman he has ever met. He knows they’re unsuited for one another but he can’t stand the thought of her with anyone else.
Kate and John’s story is filled with one adventure after another with lots of secrets and mysteries to be revealed. And as these secrets and mysteries are unveiled, the relationship between John and Kate changes and grows. Ms. Forester does a beautiful job of depicting the metamorphosis of John and Kate and their relationship. The banter and repartee between these two characters was more titillating than any scene of passion I’ve ever read. Throughout their trials and tribulations, they realize that “somehow when looking at them separately, they were wrong for each other, but together they worked.”
This is the first in Amanda Forester’s Daring Marriages series. This is a series for which I will be anxiously awaiting each new book. I am on pins and needles especially waiting to hear what’s in store for Kate and John’s siblings. This was my first Amanda Forester book. I am beyond thrilled to have found her as she will be one of those authors I instantly “one click’ on. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
