The H and the h meet by accident. He's an earl with a reputation as a rake, she's the village schoolteacher. He pulls her out of the river, after having knocked her over a bridge railing, takes her home, kisses her in the village square and then goes on his way. And of course he's smitten. And she has stars in her eyes over being touched and kissed by an earl. Her mother, who gave birth to her out of wedlock, sends mixed messages about whether she thinks the h should pursue the earl.
The H goes home and we find out that he thinks he has reformed himself now that he has custody of an orphaned niece, and also that he's in an arranged engagement to a woman he doesn't think much of and doesn't particularly want to marry. We learn that, despite this, he has deflowered his fiancee in the garden, and has had relations with her even after that, which he rationalizes as okay because he's going to marry her. But now he loves the h. What to do, what to do. After pages of dithering over the need to find a governess for his niece, he finally (I was tired of saying "Get the schoolmarm, you idiot") realizes that he has just bowled over the most likely candidate. Really, he isn't too smart, this H.
So he approaches the h and she jumps at the chance to get into his household. Because the h is a golddigger. There is no other word for her. This h is after the main chance in a big way. So she is picked up by his fancy carriage and goes to the mansion where in very short order (or at least so it seemed) he deflowers her too!! And she's just fine with it until he tells her, after it's over, that oh, by the way, he's engaged! So dreams of marriage to the rich guy are dashed, although I think they had sex at least once more.
These are two despicable people who deserved each other. He was the kind of guy despised by heroes and heroines of other novels -- the guy who will despoil a virgin and then walk away. She was was the kind of woman despised by heroes and heroines of other novels -- the kind of woman who is looking for money and a title first and foremost. I won't tell you how it ended, except to say that it was the most hilariously awful (but unique!) ending to a romance that I have ever read. Both H and h performed up to (or maybe down to) expectations. It was so perfectly bad that it almost made it worth the 99 cents I wasted on this debacle.
