Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Spirited new sounds from early Colonial America - from the arrival of the first colonists to the American Revolution and the birth of our republic. Performing on recorders, Baroque violin, viola da gamba, flageolet, hammered dulcimer, cittern and Baroque guitar, the musicians perform high energy improvisations, lively country dance tunes, elegant French cotillions and early American shape-note hymns. Selections from this recording was chosen and is on the soundtrack to the Hollywood blockbuster Tim Burton's Paramont film Sleepy Hollow featuring Johnny Depp!Set in 1799, "Sleepy Hollow" is based on Washington Irvings classic tale The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Faithful to the dreamy custom-bound world that Irving paints in his story, the film mixes horror, fantasy and romance and features an extraordinary cast of characters that dabble in the supernatural and the Hesperus music fits perfect!
Review
Digging Hesperus's 'American Roots'...a nimble balancing of fidelity and freedom that makes this musical history tour is consistently appealing. --Washington Post, April, 1997
About the Artist
Scott Reiss & Tina Chancey, Co-directors Hesperus, named for Venus and the West Wind, creates a synthesis of living and historic musical traditions by exploring the cultural parallels between the Old World and the new. Founded in 1979, the group comprises several ensembles with overlapping membership. They collectively perform Baroque and American Colonial music, Spanish and Native American works from New Spain, and a crossover style that combines European medieval and renaissance music with traditional American folk styles. Two CDs on the Maggie's Music label are Early American Roots and Celtic Roots which features Three- time US National Scottish fiddle champion Bonnie Rideout.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2021wish we could hear this kind of music more often at renaissance faires! Instead of "please the mainstream public" kind of music people get at Faires! Oh well. Great CD.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2015This was delivered today and I immediately fell in love with it. This is the music that came with the American colonists from England. Listening to this is like taking a trip through time...Without leaving my house. It is light, peaceful music that is very soothing and easy on the ears. I plan to order more from these artists and I highly recommend to anyone looking for something with a light-classical sound or to those searching for a little something different.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2011It's Williamsburg music. I love the music. Wonderful sound. I listen to it constantly. I enjoy it most of all at night before going to bed while I'm reading. It soothes the savage beast, or, is it the savage breast. Anyway, it has a very calming, relaxing effect.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2014How not to embrace the beginnings of such an influential nation when it is about its music with interest and passion?
And this collection of music of the old colonies will not disappoint anyone!!! It is gorgeous.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2018Great musicianship and wonderful selections.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2013If you are into early American music, you should listen to this music. This was a very nice, lively sampling of period music.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2011Hesperus strikes gold again. Authentic sounds, well played by masters of their instruments. Thank you so much for the inspiring background of Colonial tunes while I work!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2014In contrast to the headline, I sort of liked the album. However, all the songs have a very distinctive sound that becomes boring. Perhaps that is just because the music of this era DID sound much alike. Anyway, I bought it and am not sorry.

Bill NeavesReviewed in Canada on February 14, 20155.0 out of 5 stars A Charming look into the Past
The tunes go back to the times of early settlers but the performances are fresh an engaging. A great additional to any collection of instrumental folk music.
