We gave this to my daughter for her 2nd birthday. She is 90th for height, so it fit her perfectly on the lowest setting. She wouldn't touch it for two weeks. The bike is heavy and she was no coordinated enough to lift it up and get on it. (She was a late walker, and still unsteady on her feet.) Then I got the bright idea of watching you tube videos of other kids. By the second video she was sitting on the bike in the living-room, helmet, lights, and all, slowly shifting her weight side to side to get the feel of it. We took it outside and the rest is history. Within two weeks of using it her balance and coordination improved so much that even her doctor was impressed. Now she runs along, glides with ease, and likes to challenge her balance. She confidently tackles the hills around my neighborhood (thankfully she has the breaks on the whole way down, I don't need any more grey hairs!) We took it to a kids fun day obstacle course race where she was the youngest by almost a year. It was heavier than the bikes, and so she struggled a bit over some of the obstacles, but she could run circles around the kids on trikes and training wheels.
No matter where we take this bike it turns heads. It is beautifully made and a great talking point. It is gender neutral and not plastered with Disney characters. It is sturdy enough that I can ride it for a giggle, and I don't worry when the big kids want to try it out.
A tip: This bike has two steering settings. She was confident enough with the restricted setting that we moved it to full steering within a few months. However, we changed the seat height at the same time and the two together was too much to get used to at once. Keep the seat (and therefore the center of gravity) low until they are better with steering and balancing.
We store the bike out of the rain, but we use it in all conditions, rain, mud, beach sand, asphalt, and grass. We have had to top up the tires twice in six months. At 2.5 she is on the middle seat height (still 90th percentile) so we have awhile longer before she gets too big.
I would recommend this product.
One thing is that I'm not sure these are actually made in pink any more. The box we got from the retailer was dated 2009. Since it's wood and a pair of tires, that didn't seem to matter, but it may be that these are hard to find (and/or hard to find replacement parts for...).
The one quibble I have with the bike is that the inner tube nipples on the tires are really nestled tightly within the spokes of the small tires. I had a little trouble finding a pump that would fit on them easily (or at all). But once that was solved, everything's been great.
It's already starting to get a few scuff marks on it, but I think that comes with the territory with a toddler toy. And on the plus side, since the construction is so sturdy, I don't have any concerns that she's going to actually break anything.
