Editorial Reviews

EARLY TAKES is a pivotal companion piece to this critically acclaimed documentary and features previously unreleased recordings from George Harrison. Included are rare, early takes of "I'd Have You Anytime" and "Awaiting on You All," plus unheard demo versions of "Behind That Locked Door," "All Things Must Pass," "Run of the Mill," and "My Sweet Lord," all later featured on Harrisons 1970 chart-topping album ALL THINGS MUST PASS. Other unreleased tracks include demos of "The Light That Has Lighted the World," "Let It Be Me," Bob Dylans "Mama You've Been on My Mind," and an early take of "Woman Don't You Cry for Me."

How lucky we were to have George Harrison make such beautiful music in our lifetime. A great soul and fantastic musician. Although some of these outtakes have been bootlegged before on the Beware of ABCKO Cd. The new remastering and clarity of these tracks, with him mostly singing with his guitar or with simple arrangements, is so heartfelt and joyous, you can't help but from being transported. If you are a fan, be ready to feel the love of why we still honour him All these years Later (Ago). I love every track but because I never heard his version of Let it Be Me before the DVD came out, this is a standout for me. Also hearing George play and sing Behind that Closed Door was breathtaking. It is one of my favorite songs of all time. Enjoy his unique gift of spirituality and breathtaking songs, a perfect companion to help lift your soul. Nameste .

Simple, human, and very emotional. Early Takes, Volume 1 is an extreme close-up of George Harrison. It's a conversation between the listener and the quiet Beatle. It simply couldn't be any better. And it's better than the 'more produced' versions of Harrison songs you're already familiar with. I love it. You'll appreciate the songs more than you do already. It's a George Harrison CD that really shines a light on George Harrison as a composer, a musician and a person.

Yes it's short time-wise, but my god listen to what you get!! I've never been a fan of the "we've got 70 plus minutes to fill on this here cd, so put everything available on regardless of quality" etc school of thought. For me, the old vinyl lp standard of 35 minutes overall (about 18 min per side) was always a perfect constraint with which an artist can do their thing (exceptions being some double lp sets, ie the White Album, Physical Graffiti, Exile On Main Street).

In any event, if you like George's work you'll LOVE this set, and for complainers who cry 'rip off', I would just point out how Olivia Harrison did NOT do what most major rock figures routinely do, which is to make these "bonus" or "extras/out-takes" sets available ONLY if you buy them as part of an uber-pricey super-deluxe boxes costing hundreds. Instead, you only have to drop a tenner.

And if you LOVE George's work, well you've already bought this haven't you?

;-)

Cheers!

What a terrific addition to George's catalogue! Giles Martin did a wonderful job with these tracks--it sounds like George is playing in my listening room!! I can only hope "Volume 1" implies there will be several more. Well worth the $'s

Remarkable outtakes from George Harrison's early solo career. Like the recent Bob Dylan Bootleg series - one can easily make the argument that these songs in their rawest form; are as good or better than the finished product. This will put to rest any notion that "All Things Must Past" was successful due to Phil Spector's grand wall of sound. These songs as presented here in their "infancy" are brilliant. Highly recommended. And to the reviewer who is unhappy that there are too few songs - please - just because you can put a lot of music on a disk - doesn't mean you should.

George Harrison, simple, humble, brilliant and definitely emotional. You get George Harrison in your face and in your ears, up close and personal and that's just the way we like it. It's like a 1x1 with George Harrison. You will be hard put to find something to surpass this. It's fresh and natural, like George in all his natural beauty. This collection makes the Inner Light shine on the fortunate listeners.

George had a very distinctive guitar style and his voice was deep and soothing. Those fortunate enough to have enjoyed these on bootleg collections can now have some of these songs made accessible. The remastering and purity is superb and you will feel what George Harrison was all about - love. George, as I've said many times was created by love; born into love; surrounded by love; created songs that sparked and reinforced love and his final directive was "love one another." George Harrison's music is a loving influence, an auditory embrace. I can't recommend this one highly enough.

Imagine the privileged thrill of sitting in the living room of your favorite musician(s) while they play their newest material for you. That's exactly how this album feels, and it's great! Doubly so for me, because "All Things Must Pass" is this Beatle Nut's favorite Harrison album. In case you're wondering, no, I never knew George, but I do have a unique take on the artist/fan perspective. More on that shortly.

There's so much more here than "All Things..."! Of the ten tracks, four are new. Two of those, Harrison's take of his own idol, Bob Dylan's "Mama, You've Been On My Mind", and a touching version of the Everly Brothers' "Let It Be Me" are in themselves more than worth the album's cost.

I mentioned sitting with a favorite artist while they play for you. I've had that that blessed and rare experience. If you've ever heard of the late Blues legend John Lee Hooker, I knew him very well for the final twenty years of his life. John Lee was very much my "Grandpa-by-adoption", and when he came to play Kansas City or Chicago, we'd spend a couple of days together. His bandmates would be hunting up girls, (I was already married), while Hook and I would glance at old movies or a ballgame on TV, and just talk, for hours.

George's "Early Takes Volume 1" brings back all those memories. I share some of these with you here, so that you might understand what it's like to have a hero/musician share his art and life with you, and, therefore, why this album carries extra meaning for this writer.

The day we met, "Hook" played songs for me backstage, when we were the only two in the room. When he was writing new material, he'd sing it for me, over the phone, (He in CA, and I in KS).
