"A sprawling novel encompassing mystery, magic and myth, religion, rejuvenation and rebirth, growing up, growing old and dying ... with sudden and unexpected explosions of action. It owes much to pulp Westerns, surrealism, utopian fantasies and the bizarrely tortured character-driven tales of John Irving... (Chavanne) clearly wants his work to be approached as serious literature, and there's no reason it shouldn't be... A highly compelling novel.... An exhaustively ambitious work."

If you have sorrows that you'd like to drown in, a life with seemingly no future, a desire to pursue the mundane, and every inkling to stay that way, then buy The Early Tales of Snow and Oakham, and burn it. Over the flames you can roast a marshmallow, but you're such a sad sack that the mallow will probably drop into the fire. As it's dropping, you will wish you had opened those now-gooey pages, read them with fervor, and changed your life around. Now you have to buy a second copy to read. The author thanks you.
If you are adventurous, a lover of pure life, and literate, then this book was written to confirm that you are on the right track! But don't take my word for it. No no. You must read it. Because even for the chronic adventurer, there will be lessons to learn. There will be characters you encounter who will make you feel small. You, as much as the sad sack mentioned above, are in need of this book, and the glorious lessons found within. Chavanne has NAILED it.
Buy the book, devour it, and then write an even better review than this one. Maybe you'll figure out how to give it six stars...
I finished reading and found myself feeling sad that it was over, and at the same time I was desperate to know what might happen next! The character development, the plot, the way it's written, everything about it is fantastic.
You'd be foolish not to read it and then give it to everyone you know!
The book has one major storyline but follows the backstories of almost every main character at the same time so that you can seemingly be completely immersed in three or four stories at one time that is about the same person. It is unlike anything I have ever read.
This review isn't doing the book near the justice that it deserves, but if you are looking on here and not sure if you should get the book, do it! You will be so happy that you bought it, it will be a book that you read and you pass on to your friends and someday your children.
Please do yourself a favor and read and re-read this wonderful book from a gifted story teller.
An excellent read and one of the best books I have read in a very long time.
