Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit Audio CD – Bargain Price, September 1, 2007

4.2 out of 5 stars 151

A passionate and lifelong defender of the environment, Vice President Al Gore describes in this classic best-selling book how human actions and decisions can endanger or safeguard the vulnerable ecosystem that sustains us all. The book’s groundbreaking analysis helped place the environment on the national agenda, summoning politicians, the media, and the public to action. The message remains just as urgent today as it did eight years ago: while much has been accomplished, we must meet a global environmental challenge that reaches into every aspect of our society.
In brave and unforgettable terms, Earth in the Balance probes the roots of the environmental crisis and offers a bold and forceful vision of a new, more sustainable path. Having provoked international discussion upon its original publication, it continues to confront us with profound challenges. Human civilization must change its course if we are to heal our ailing environment and preserve the earth’s ecology for future generations.

We are burdening our fragile environment with waste and tearing it apart to acquire, always, more we than we need. In one lifetime even I have seen the detrimental effects of our careless use of resources and disregard for the fragility of the earth. This book is a wake up call for those who will listen, a call coming barely in time, if not already too late. This book is comprehensive, but clearly comprehensible.....an absolutely gripping read.

Excellent and very scary, should be required reading for all high schoolers, IMO. Explains in very readable and understandable detail how we are consuming our planet, and what we need to do to change.

I only bought it for the historical perspective of "climate change" distortion and extortion. Yeah, I am an earth scientist who has studied climatology...

Good service and delivery, but it's a terrible book filled with junk science, which is what one should expect when reading what a scientific illiterate has to say about something as complex as climate change.

Al Gore's social science degree with it's 6 hour of bone head math and 6 hours of bonehead science coupled with his life's experience as a master politician just isn't near enough to write anything meaningful.

Leave it up to the scientists to write scientific books Al. It's just not up your alley.

This book is an easy reader, meaning that it was easy to follow and understand. The need for more informative books like this one could definitely help inform the world how crucial it is to put pressure on the Amercian government, United Nations, and other countries to take reponsibilty for their part in deteriating the ozone layer.

This book is now eight years old and some of the concerns about global warming raised by Gore have been researched and disputed. But this doesn't take away a single bit from Gores concerns about urban sprawl and the quality of life issues he raises. This great book establishes Gores credentials as both a thinker and an environmentalist and the kind of person well equipped to lead our country into the next century.
