A good tale with lots of ups and downs, great characters who learn and grow with each other. Thanks for the good read.
The reader is quickly immersed in Emily’s infectious desire to adopt Betsy, an immigrant child she found and rescued in Heaven to Betsy. The story begins at a celebratory dinner in the Big Texas Steak Ranch amongst lights twinkling from mounted dear heads on the wall. Emily and her boss, the head turning, good looking attorney, Jack are celebrating her recent graduation from foster parenting classes. What comes next is a multi-faceted plot line taking the reader through the nerve wracking steps of her hopeful adoption of Betsy, the clandestine operations at a client’s store, the risks she takes to protect two teenagers who witness a horrific murder and the sizzling romance building between Emily and Jack.
Hutchins strength comes through in her character development and ability to integrate readers into the storyline. I found myself reading out loud a scene in which Emily runs into her teenage orthodontist… with an all too familiar feeling, Emily confesses she has not been wearing her retainer regularly. Talk about identifying with a character! In another scene as the reader sits in the car WITH Emily dreaming of a life with Betsy, she is shattered back to reality with a sharp rap of the window. The reader jumps, Emily jumps… the “wicked foster mother” is nuzzled up with her nose to the glass.
Earth to Emily is the second book in the Emily series however, it knocks it out of the park as a stand alone book with a complete storyline and well defined characters. How many days until Emily #3 is released?
Emily Bernal has fallen in love with a little girl in the Child Protective Services and has decided to try to adopt her. The first step is to get accepted as a foster parent. Child Protective Services Investigator Wallace Gray is doing all he can to help her. However, he also needs her help in finding two teen runaways- Greg and Farrah. Emily had also had a chance to meet these two teens before. She had made a connection with them so Wallace asked her to go to the Love’s outside Amarillo and try to find them and bring them in. She goes to meet them with her boss, and hopefully boyfriend, Jack Holden. She discovers Greg is helping Farrah get away from an abusive situation and they do not want her help now. She gives them her card to call her if they change their minds. They have also seen something at the Love’s that they shouldn’t have seen and are running from someone; but they won’t tell her who or why. Emily and Jack get pulled into a murder investigation by their presence at the Love’s station.
Emily has good intentions but somehow manages to get herself into impossible situations without trying. Jack seems to be there to help her get out of trouble. Can he help her now with Greg and Farrah and with adopting the little girl? Can he do it without getting crosswise with the law, after all, he is a lawyer.
It is a fun book and series to read.
I thought Katie was an amazing woman in the Annalise sagas, but Emily has become just as strong, funny and resourceful, and has such a heart for kids in need.
Hell To Pay is close on the heels of Heavens To Betsy and Earth to Emily, so start reading all of this series from the first one, Saving Grace, and get ready to laugh some more, and have your heartstrings pulled.
