Hoof Fuzz

Hoof Fuzz

The Hoof Fuzz is a germanium/silicon hybrid fuzz which is based on character of the classic green Russian muff. It is capable of creating everything from dirty and organic overdrive to monstrous fuzz madness. It features a smooth, natural and harmonically rich sustain that is less associated with muff style fuzzes and has more in common with an overdriven amplifier. The Hoof Fuzz has some real clarity and distinctiveness that provides a tight and controlled signal that will surely be heard through the mix. The Shift control is secret weapon of the Hoof. It changes the frequency response of the tone control, primarily on the treble side, but it also diminishes any unnecessary muddiness on the bass side too. Scoop the mids or boost them- lots of tonal shaping options are on tap! The Hoof Fuzz has become a key pedal for TONS of well-known artists in both the studio and on stage. All analog, true bypass and made one at time by human hands in Akron, Ohio (the center of the universe).

Measures: 4 5/8″ x 2 1/2″ x 2.25″ with knobs. Top mount jacks.

Power Requirements

A standard 9 volt DC power supply intended for musical instruments with a negative center 2.1mm barrel. We strongly recommend a high quality power supply with isolated outputs and good filtering to avoid unwanted noise. Will also run off a 9v battery for you olde tymee types. Current Draw is 2.5ma.

Warranty

EarthQuaker Devices will repair or replace any defective device for the life of the product. Warranty does not apply to the enclosure, graphics, knobs, hardware or any devices that are deliberately destroyed or modified by anyone other than EarthQuaker Devices.

Controls
  • Fuzz: Clockwise for heavy, counterclockwise for light.
  • Tone: Bass to the left, Treble to the right
  • Level: Controls the output level.
  • Shift: Adjust the mid content. Clockwise for classic scooped mids, counterclockwise for the more modern cutting mids all the kids love.

First, the current picture differs from the model Earthquaker is currently selling. The one I received is the same except it has standard boutique-style pinched knobs.

My interest in the Hoof came because I love the USA Big Muff, but I'm not a fan of it's large size and scooped mids. So in looking for a replacement I found that the Hoof solves both of those problems. The Hoof is advertised as a Russian Muff Clone, but I found it to be identical to my USA Big Muff. The only difference is that the Hoof is lacking the Muff's obnoxious low end response (which just muddies up a rock mix anyway). So I consider that an improvement.

In addition to dropping the useless bass frequencies, the shift knob on the Hoof lets me dial in how much mid-frequencies I want, so I'm finally able to cut through the mix. At the end of the day the hoof is just a Big Muff with an extra knob. If you're not a fan of the Big Muff then this pedal is definitely not for you. If you love the Muff but wished it wasn't so muddy sounding then the Hoof is the perfect solution. My only gripe is that on the model I have, the input & output jacks are on the top rather than the sides.

I would like to preface my review by telling you that I have tried tons of Muff style fuzz pedals. I love the singing sustain, rich harmonics and gritty, thunderous tone of the muff. However, many of them have several inherent flaws, such as a lack of midrange, making it hard to cut through in a band, and too much low end, causing your guitar to blend in to with the bass guitar and go unheard, once again. I've been searching for a muff that can both cut through the mix and retain the beautiful thunderous sound that I love the Muff for, for a long while. The closest I ever came, before the Hoof, was a Deluxe Big Muff. I have tried probably around 10 or so muff style fuzz pedals through the years. Every one of them either sounds fantastic, and gets lost in a band setting, or just doesn't have that magical tone I'm going for when you unscoop the mids. The deluxe muff was close though. I felt like it was a slight compromise though. When you stomped on the mid boost it altered the tone a bit, making it go from perfect to just okay. It also had too much low end, or was shrill depending on the setting. I even bit the bullet and bought a Pharoah Supreme once, thinking with all the options it would have to have what I was looking for. Wrong, I hated that thing. It didn't even sound like a muff to me. But, back to the Hoof. This thing is the perfect fuzz pedal to me. I have always loved the characteristics of a nice germanium based fuzz, the smooth, never harsh sustain, insanely rich harmonics, and so on. But, they are lacking in the thunderous and aggressive tones that a muff produces. This hybrid is beyond ingenious. You get the best of both. I will never have to buy another fuzz again (probably will though, haja), between this and the EQD Park Fuzz, I have both ends of fuzz covered perfectly.Read more ›

My go to fuzz pedal! I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Fuzz is a very personal thing and there are a lot of choices out there. Before you just go and buy one because so many people say how great it is, watch a ton of YouTube videos and think about the fuzz tone you're after.

That being said, I currently have three fuzz pedals, and this is the one I use most. If your a fan of Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Black Sabbath, QOTSA, Mogwai, Pink Floyd, you can get all those tones outta this guy. Remember that Gilmour barely used any gain. If you buy this looking for that tone, keep the fuzz dialed way back :-)

It's my favorite!

From a little fuzz to full on face melting goodness, this pedal sounds absolutely amazing. I am currently driving with a full tone mofset and it absolutely kills.

This is a good fuzz pedal. I give it three stars because it has been difficult to gain stack with using my TS-9. This is whether placed before or after in the chain. If the level on the Hoof fuzz is ever past 12 o clock in either position, a noise gate is in order. Not that big of a deal depending on how you plan to integrate the pedal into your setup. Again, it's a good fuzz pedal.
