The first major quake hit in the middle of the night on September, 2010, leaving widespread damage but no fatalities. The aftershocks continued without let-up as residents dealt with knee-deep mud ("liquefaction" is the technical term,) loss of power, an unusable sewer system, and general chaos. The day after Christmas, with the stores full of shoppers, another big quake hit. The aftershocks continued and many residents packed up and left.
On February 21, 2011, yet another huge quake occurred, leaving 185 people dead and flattening much of historic Christchurch. The aftershocks continued. Fear and exhaustion took a toll on even the strongest, and stress caused a higher-than-average death rate among the elderly and other medically vulnerable people. The author realized one day that she missed the sounds of birds singing. The birds had left the area completely.
This is not a journalist's account of a tragedy, but a very intimate story of how one woman, her children, her mother, and her partner (and his family) were affected by an on-going situation which literally knocked them off their feet again and again. I read it through without stopping and then went back to the beginning and read it again! It's fascinating and I am still marveling at the strength and resiliency of the people of Christchurch. They are true heroes.
The breakdown of so many services, the concern for the well being of family members and the difficulties faced in the days immediately after the biggest quakes made us, as residents of California, realize the immensity of the problems we will face when we are hit with "the big one".
