Replace Plastic Bags

Plastics are devastating for the environment. They do not degrade; end up in the ocean where they form a huge island of plastic larger than some states. They harm sea life. Sea salt has bits of plastic in it. Mesh bags to the rescue. I bought a set of these Earthwise Mesh bags and take them to the Farmer's Market where I use them for vegetables and fruits. They weight next to nothing, so I can put my produce in the mesh and weigh them. Once home I can rinse the vegetables and fruits right in the mesh bags and store them in the fridge.

Like many people, I’m trying to cut down on the consumption of single-use plastic in my household. These are great for most fruits and vegetables at the store. I really like the little toggle, although I know it’s plastic, because it does a better job at keeping my produce from falling out of the bag than the ones that you have to tie to close. I will say it’s not great for storing veggies in the fridge, like lettuce and green onions, as they dry out and wilt faster than they do in the plastic bags from the store, but I can use the plastic bags for those particular items and reuse the same bags until they get gross or torn.

I don’t bother trying to get the 16 year old cashiers to use the tare weight of the bags when scanning my groceries, and can easily handle the additional few cents it costs me to do so. I feel like these are light enough that it just isn’t a concern for me. I have found that most cashiers still have a difficult time getting the produce to scan through the bags, but it doesn’t cause too much of a hold up in the line.

I plan on purchasing more of these and giving them as gifts to some of my friends and family who have expressed interest in reducing plastic use in their households as well.

My daughter-in-law purchased these bags and told me about them and showed them to me when I was at her house last. I then went home and ordered them for myself. I received my purchase quickly and have been using them every time I go to the grocery store ever since. The range of sizes of the bags is helpful, i.e. you don't need the same size bag for a couple of heads of garlic as you do for corn on the cob. I also like the cord closure at the top so that nothing falls out. I have only had them for three weeks so I can't attest to their durability other than to say that they seem very well made and I don't see anything that indicates they will be ripping any time soon. I'm glad to not have to take plastic bags off the roll (when you can find them in the store) only to take them home and throw them out. Good purchase. I'm glad i got them.

I bought these on a whim. I’m not radical about being ecological, but I do believe that many times it’s easy enough for us to not put another piece of plastic in the ground, if you don’t have to. I found these very easy to use, I just keep them inside one of my reusable shopping bags, so they’re handy when I go shopping. I found it funny that I haven’t used these once yet, when I didn’t get a positive comment from the checkout person. I have also started using them to carry my empty bottles and cans back to the store. I can’t fit more than 5 or 6 in a bag, but I can use 2 if I have more to return.

Great in theory, but not a replacement for plastic store bags

Pros:
- reduce plastic waste (why I purchased them)
- mostly see thru (though many grocers still need to reach inside and touch veggies to see/scan veggie code, so not completely see thru or scannable thru mesh)
- different sizes help.
Cons:
- NOT a good replacement for plastic/non-mesh bags for storing majority of fruits and vegetables (e.g. herbs, carrots, greens, beets, etc. or basically any fruit or vegetable that needs to be refrigerated). This is because the mesh does not trap air/moisture and thus your fruits/veggies will dry out and wilt quicker if stored in these mesh bags. This is a deal breaker for me and probably for most people. I need a non breathable or at least a less porous bag or else I won't be able to store most things for very long in my fridge. If I can only use these for a brief second at the grocery store, but not for storing in my fridge, it's just really not that useful and creates a lot more work for me. And I don't really need a plastic bag to grocery shop for other items that don't require refrigeration (e.g. citrus or apples), those are fine just going straight into my cart, then into my fridge..so I see little value in using these bags for those items.
- Mesh causes any water from any washed produce (most things in produce aisle) to leak onto you or any groceries they are sharing a bag with. Since there's not as much protection between produce and rest of groceries also need to ensure not placing your produce near any meats/eggs, etc.
- Mesh (particularly near string) can trap water and get moldy if not careful
- Given what they are, they are a bit pricey in my mind.

We have done away with using plastic grocery bags in my area, so people have resorted to using the plastic produce bags. So, now you see these bags on the street, in the ocean. So to be more environmentally friendly, I decided to try these Reusable bags. I love them! they are light, so no need to worry about the weight of your produce, if they get dirty, simply throw them in the wash with your other clothes. They come in different sizes, are convenient to use and they have a locking drawstring so you don't need to worry about your produce falling out. I haven't tried using them yet for bulk items such as rice or nuts, but I'm sure they will work just fine. I could foresee it being difficult to remember the SKU number for bulk items, but I'm sure you could write it down or put it in your phone. I will purchase again, if not for myself, as gifts. the product is as described and arrived on time. I will purchase from this seller again.
