"The writing is superb ... If there is any writer that Hoskins reminds me of it would be John Steinbeck. But instead of Northern California and the Salinas Valley, we get to explore Australia and New Zealand." - R. Simmons, Readers' Favorite
"... The result is a road tale that takes interpersonal connections and discoveries and elevates them to a new level of introspection and growth, making 'East - A Novel' highly recommended for readers who like their stories introspective as well as adventurous, and who look at the roadtrip experience as one example of growth-inducing decisions." - D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review
"This is a book that ended up even questioning my own life and where I was heading – how I could change the mundane into something a lot more exciting." - Christine Frayling, New Zealand Booksellers' Association
"What an amazing capture of unadulterated raw humanity, in all its shades of light and darkness. I read it over a few days. Couldn't put it down ... Really, really enjoyed it." - Teresa Herleth
Lead a tidy life. Work hard. Pay taxes. Mow your lawn. Be a good citizen. Vince Osbourne has lived a tidy life for thirty years.

Reading is personal. Hence, I'll declare my prejudices. The works of Charles Bukowski and Jack Kerouac are in the league of single ply toilet paper. As for 50 shades of Grey, you might as well wipe yourself with a newspaper. You get the drift. The good art of writing has been hijacked since WWII by charlatans, mirrored by a reading public with the attention span of a fruit fly.
More prejudice. I prefer the fertile prose of Fowles to the sterile one of Hemingway. Give me Nietzsche and Schopenhauer any day over the arid minimalist.
East is a self-published work, among the over 500,000 (and growing) self-published books every year. Self-published books now account for over 40% of e-book revenue.
The author, Peri Hoskins, is on record as a fan of Hemingway, Bukowski, and Kerouac. Fortunately, this fact did not influence my approach to the book. Nor was I overly concerned with the lack of plot, nor with the style of simple short sentences (which tends to stifle flow and have a stilted feel). I would have liked more integration, unification, and synthesis.
The value of East lies not so much in its subject matter as in the author's reflections. The journey has nothing to teach us, in the sense that it is essentially just another man in search of discovery in a particular place and time, a theme repeated throughout the millennia of human history.
However, the book is a powerful tool for those interested in deep qualitative psychology. The author is authentic as they come. And brave. He has effectively volunteered to lie on Freud's public couch. Vince's soul is there for all to see. His inner self is exposed with no spin. His idiosyncratic observations of the myriad of characters (family, long standing friends, acquaintances, and strangers) touching his life is refreshing and essentially a reflection on Vince's own character. It is here that Vince gives us more than he thinks (or intended).
East does not pretend to rise to the genius of Nicholas' journey in John Fowles' The Magus, or to have Fowles' beautiful, pregnant prose; nor does it pretend to possess Orwell's timeless treatment of topic (for example, as expressed in 1984 and Animal Farm). What East does is expose the naked spirit of a man in need of self-discovery.
I give the book 5 stars, although I'd like to impose a half star penalty. It's obvious that the journey takes place in Australia, and it's a journey West! Yet, the author reverses the direction to East. I found this artificial imposition irritating, being familiar with the Australian landscape. It serves no useful purpose and is counterproductive to those in the know. Others may beg to differ. But, that is the joy of reading.
His gimlet eye captures it as it is.
Not always as we would like to hear it but true to the point.
Looking forward to gifting copies to friends and family for Xmas.
"East" is a hard book to categorise, and it shouldn't be: it should just be read.
Vince has reached a stage at 30 when he wants to break free from a life that seems to be suffocating him. He has been working as a junior lawyer but needs to do something different and this book tells of his travels towards the East of Australia.
His journey draws you along with him as he discovers himself and realises that he can achieve so much more than he previously thought possible. He settles in places with people from his past that he sees in a new light, along with their prejudices.
Then there are the long and testing journeys across the deserts of Australia, meeting a fascinating mix of people along the way. Vince’s observations on the Aboriginal people, being of Maori origin himself, are extremely revealing. The back breaking work for a mining company, to earn some extra money, couldn’t be further removed from his previous work as a lawyer.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys travel writing and journeys of self-discovery.

Vince has only the most necessary luggage and little money.
Peri Hoskins tells the real story about the challenges of such a journey: not enough money, unmet needs, disagreeable people, problems, concerns; but also the joy, happiness, and freedom ...
Vince takes you with him. I felt like I was experiencing the journey myself. I saw the places, felt the atmospheres, thought Vince’s thoughts with him and went through his challenges.
It was a fantastic read. I was very sad when it ended and had to say farewell to good friends.
I would definitely take another journey with Vince.
