Top customer reviews
I was immediately impressed with the look, heft, balance, and construction of this pen, and love the smooth action of how the lid secures when the pen is closed...VERY nice.
The pen shipped in an Amazon box wrapped in clear plastic with the clear plastic sleeve from the factory. No invoice, no paperwork, no instructions. And yes, people who have complained that there was no ink with the pen are absolutely right, (seriously folks...Read the "What's Included" print. It may be fine, but it's there for a reason.) I have a couple of fountain pens that use converter cartridges, so this was no problem.
I did have a few problems once I'd filled it with ink, (basic black, cheap Parker "Quink" brand, because it's what I had on hand.) The nib was scratchy and the ink flow was very thin and inconsistent, even after "preloading" the pen, (dipping just the tip into my ink jar to help get the flow from the cartridge started.
I had a problem with that for a while, but then I pulled out some scratch paper and increased the pressure on the nib, flexing it a bit, trying to break it in, (without too much pressure for fear of breaking it.) Just drawing fairly broad, wet lines for a bit to get the nib to flex a bit.
After that, I returned to writing with VERY little pressure, (less than a ball point,) and I found that the pen was behaving almost flawlessly.
The friend who suggested Jinhao to begin with advised me to rub the nib with leather, (sort of buff it a bit,) as sometimes something "gets stuck between the tines." I think mine were just pushed together a little too tightly from the factory.
Once that was done, I wrote an 8 page letter to a friend with no issues whatsoever. No leaking, no skipping, no flow problems.
EXCELLENT writing instrument for such a small price!
I would recommend this pen even if only for the looks. Bonus here that it actually writes well.
DESIGN: Barrel made with rosewood and chrome fittings. Weight is 42 grams, with the cap weighing 16 grams. Diameter is 13 mm. Length: 5 1/4" capped; 4 3/4" uncapped; approximately 6 1/2" posted. Balance - not too top heavy when posted, yet it is long. If your hands are large, having the pen posted will not present a problem. However, if your hands are small, like my own, having the pen uncapped proved less awkward.
Jinhao is embossed on the fitting around the bottom of the cap. Clip is springy, so that it will not be a problem attaching it to a shirt pocket. The clip has the Jinhao emblem on it, which is on several others Jinhao pens. The cap top has a unique design, with a black button-like piece placed in the center of the attractive chrome fitting. Section: Solid plastic, with no sharp edges. I found it comfortable to write with.
NIB & FILLING MECHANISM: Nib was smooth with a bit of 'positive' feedback. Screw type converter for bottled ink. You can use an international cartridge with the Jinhao 8812. This appears to be a #5 medium nib, and was fairly wet. I will probably tweak it a bit to make it wetter, or possibly locate a #5 broad nib. Did not have any problems inking the pen with the converter. After priming the feed, it laid a fairly nice medium line of ink. After writing a full page to test if there would be skipping, I noticed just a bit in the beginning, which quickly disappeared and I had a solid line of writing. Converter holds approximately .5 ml. of ink. Had no problem with the nib moving around.
With just a bit of pressure I was able to get a bit of line variation, however, this is not a flex nib. Dry time on Black 'n Red notebook paper was 28+ secs. Dry time on inexpensive notebook paper was 15 sec. There was no bleed through on the Black 'n Red notebook paper. There was no leaking. Well behaved writer. Flows well with the Chesterfield Inks.
OVERALL: It is not one of those pens that grabs your eye, however, it does have an understated, solid classic look about it, and I do like that look. I can see using this pen at the office, or as a gift to someone on the job, or someone who is not looking for a pen with a 'gaudy' look. When I consider the price of the pen, this is truly an excellent buy, and nice enough to add to your pen collection. One thing for sure, if someone takes a liking to it, and you decide to give it to them, you will have given them a nice gift which did not break the bank. I would say this is an inexpensive pen, yet, not a cheap one! Shipped in a clear plastic sleeve. As with most fountain pens they do not come with an ink cartridges. My computer does not give me the best picture, however, I trust the picture does give you some idea.
