Absolutely the best book about a moment in the biggest offensive thrust by North Vietnam Army. How NVA was defeated, why Turley was
thrust into the role, "he was born for". Outgunned, outmanned unmercifully pounded by NVA artillery, massive ground attacks; Turley orders
Dong Ha Bridge to be blown by Capt. Ripley; "I thought for sure I sent him to his death"; successfully stopping this Easter Day Offensive. Destiny put Turley in the right place, right time. 10's of thousands of lives saved by Col. Turley actions, despite being called on the floor for making
the right military decisions to defeat a numerically superior enemy. Turley's superiors completely out of the circuit for knowledge of impending
invasion. Looking to blame others and save their own ass. Meanwhile the biggest offensive of the Vietnam War is being fought by Col. Turley and
27 other American advisors. This victory is under published, and seldom acknowledged. Both Turley and Ripley deserve the Medal of Honor!

There are many histories that have been written about Vietnam. Each has its own type of description about particular events and their surrounding circumstances, as is the case with "Easter Offensive". It's about a unique situation in which a group of Marine advisors ( CoVans) found themselves when the offensive began late March of 1972.

Colonel Turley presents a well documented account of the dilemma of trying to help stem the tide of advancing NVA forces while dealing with battlefield politics. Interesting reading!

Five stars because he tells it like it was. and I was there.

In the book, Colonel Turley gives an excellent report on the first 4½ weeks of the Easter Offensive in the spring of 1972 in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam. His observations on the quality of leadership, and actions of the military during this time, Vietnamese and American, have been substantiated by a number of other authors. Additionally, Colonel Turley's personal conduct exemplifies the character and valor that is expected of all American soldiers, airmen, marines, and sailors. In the absence of orders, to start with almost nothing and do almost anything, almost every time is the major difference between the American military and all others who are left wanting.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of the Vietnam war.

A read for every Marine and military historian

I was there--USS Buchanan (DDG-14). Gerry Turley saved a lot of lives with his actions the first week and, IMO, is directly responsible for saving Marines on FSB A2, dropping the Dong Ha bridges, and delaying the PAVN assault on Quang Tri/Hue for a month.
