The uncertainty and unpredictability associated with running AMS ads seem to be a result of the fact that the platform and its activities are too big and robotic for even Amazon employees to know and describe well. Plus which, when one clicks on Help in AMS, they are redirected to KDP help, and their questions are answered (or not) by correspondents knowing little or nothing about how AMS ads work.
So I was feeling left on my own until I read this helpful book. Now at least I have an honest, experienced, and generous mentor in what seems to be for everyone a maddening, mysterious, always-changing labyrinth. Ms. Humphrey doesn't claim to know everything, but she's learned a lot and she shares her experiences and the tactics and conclusions she's arrived at clearly and completely. I made more than 50 notes in this book, and I will read it again before pulling the trigger on the keywords I've been collecting. I wouldn't call myself assured yet of a positive ROI, but with the help of AMS Ads for Authors, I'm cautiously optimistic.
Update: At the end of the book, the author introduces a huge, super-helpful forum thread, which now leads to another, just-as-helpful thread. It took me a week to read both threads, and I would say she's put as much work into her posts there as she did in this well-thought-out book (I now have twice the notes I had from just the book). I'm glad I read the whole book before the threads. It was good to learn from one good teacher before hearing opinions from every middling student. Between this book and the threads, each makes the other twice as valuable. Now it's back to the book and on to the ads for me.
This one is a no-brainer.
It's clear, concise, and it's not filled with hype and promises. It isn't a funnel into an expensive online course.
As a side bar, the author does have a video course that parallels the book.
I highly recommend that as well because the visuals helped make the information easier to absorb.
It's reasonably priced and as I mentioned, it's not about hype and glamor.
The bottom line is that if you're considering using AMS, then to not spend a few bucks/ hours learning the nuts and bolts is foolish.
Get this book and you'll be happy you did.
