Editorial Reviews

Review

“If I could only choose one book to lead me from garden to kitchen to make my own body care products, this would be the one. This book is a keeper!”
―Marlene Adelmann, founder and director of The Herbal Academy

“This book is full of tested recipes and solid instructions. It has a little bit of everything. I love the practical tips for handling ingredients and safely storing your handmade products.”
―Anne-Marie Faiola, founder of SoapQueen.com, owner of Bramble Berry and author of Soap Crafting and Pure Soapmaking

“Beautifully arranged and photographed! Jan has finally taken her wonderful recipes and gorgeous photography and created a dreamy handcrafter’s guide. Her whimsical formulas combine play and purpose, making this a useful book to enjoy year-round.”
--Holly Bellebuono, director The Bellebuono School of Herbal Medicine and author of The Essential Herbal for Natural Health and The Healing Kitchen

“So many books provide recipes for the do-it-yourselfer to make at home, but few give you tips for how to craft your own recipes. I’m excited to make Jan’s recipes, but over-the-moon about the idea that her readers will be encouraged to source simple ingredients from the backyard and get creative in the kitchen to make natural bodycare products at home!”
-Dawn Combs, author of Heal Local and co-owner of Mockingbird Meadows

“Whether you have a small handful of dried calendula in the cupboard or a yard full of dandelions you want to put to good use, Jan Berry is your best friend. The deep connection she has with the plants she works is evident as she introduces you to their personalities and dreams up simple and creative ways to invite them into your home. ‘Nerdy’ doesn't quite describe this farm wife's enthusiasm for herbs―she's pure genius!”
- Rachael Brugger, managing editor at HobbyFarms.com and UrbanFarmOnline.com

I am a long time follower of Jan's blog The Nerdy Farm Wife so I was quick to preorder this knowing how great her recipes are. She is a concise writer of recipes, with easy to follow instructions. I am cautious in trying new things and her straightforward approach got me making some salves and lotion bars. I'm excited to try some new things in this book.
About the book itself:
The photos are gorgeous. The spine of this book is unique, a combination of glue and string bound that allows for it to open wide and stay open from any spot in the book - which I think is such an attention to detail for a cookbook.
What's inside:
Skin care, salves & balm, body butters & lotion bars, creams & lotions, soaks & salts, bath melts & scrubs, lip care, hair care, handmade soaps, home remedies, household solutions, and pet care. There's a great intro to the supplies you'll be using as well as a thorough index. Any skill level will find something to enjoy in this book.

I love this book! If your into DIY natural products at home this book is for you. Most recipes require only a few ingredients, ingredients easy to find at vendors who sell oils and herbs like Mountain Rose Herbs, and most you can pick right from your yard like dandelion and sunflowers. I know a lot of these recipes are effective because over the years I myself made very similar versions and had great results. I never wrote them down, so I am pleased to have Jan's book as a reference now. The pictures are stunning, the recipes easy to read and uncomplicated. I love that she gives a customizable recipe for the lotions, balms and salves so that you have a basic recipe to follow. There is even a section to making natural soaps and basic instructions- and unlike Anne-Marie Faiola who wrote Pure Soapmaking ( a joke about natural by the way)- Jan Berry"s recipes ARE Natural and effective. (This girl is all about Natural). By far Jan is the Soap Queen of natural soaps and I have had way better success using Jan's natural soap recipes. There is no hidden agenda in this book either- she's not selling her company like the other Queen- Jan is a very knowledgeable in her field and loves to share her passion. She is bright, respectful and very helpful in her field. Her FB page is one of the best groups- informational supportive and full of great insight. I love that she included a small pet section and I am eager to try the dry shampoo on my short haired terrier when the snow stops blowing. There is a section for homecare and some great natural recipes. You can always double up her recipes to make larger batches. The beginning of the book explains about oils, butters and other additives, and even recommends tools you may need. Most of it we have or can purchase at second hand stores.Read more ›

I have been making my own face creams for years, but I was looking for some new inspiration and this is it! It has a huge variety of recipes to try including skin care (cleaners, toners, and masks), salves and balms, body butters and lotion bars, creams and lotions, bath soaks and scrubs, lip care, hair car, homemade soaps, home remedies, nontoxic cleaners for your home, and all-natural pet care.

I love the format of the book. It is very earthy feeling with type-writer style text and beautiful full-cover photographs of EVERY SINGLE RECIPE!!! I can just sit down and flip thru this book and get so motivated to try it myself.

Recipes are easy to follow. I was jazzed to learn about herbal infusions and home made soap. This book covers it in a simple way and opens up a new world for me of homemade, all natural products.

I love this book!!! Check out my photos of examples of this lovely book.

I have really enjoyed this book! I have made seven of the recipes in the book so far (and a few variations as well) and each one has turned out astoundingly well. Normally, I am a notorious recipe fail-er, but the information is presented so clearly, so neatly, that it is really hard to mess up. I am truly grateful to the author, because it is just so much fun to make something and have it turn out well! In fact, it's now become my mini-obsession... I've been buying ingredients and making like crazy. I suppose that is one hazard of the book!

P.S. I do highly recommend having a digital scale handy, as I think it has been key to my success because I couldn't mess up the measurements. I bought one on Amazon for about $11.

I've been following The Nerdy Farm Wife blog for just a couple months now, as I stumbled upon it looking for DIY natural lip balm recipes. I was so excited to preorder Jan Berry's first print book. It did not disappoint. The photography is beautiful and really gives you a sense for what you will be creating yourself. So many little details... Even when you open the front flap, the paper is green (hello GOING GREEN haha I loved it).

On most of the recipe pages, there is plenty of room should you desire to make notes as your making this recipe. I like that because I tend to make notes, especially if it's a recipe I make more than once. Every few recipes, on the pages there are circle/oval shapes that are yellow. In here, she has "tip" or "variation" which I thought was a nice touch. It shows that the author had a forethought to know where someone might naturally have a question and/or need an alternative for that particular recipe. Anyway...that's just my thought LOL

Regarding the availability of certain herbs/flowers/etc...logic tells most people that of course not everything is readily available to all people everywhere. Partly due to the fact that there are varying geographical climates (maybe economical climate as well?) Naturally someone who lives in a desert type climate, might not be able to grow something that is typically grown in a more wet environment. But thanks to the Internet, you can buy the stuff anytime LOL I've noticed on Jan's blog, she has affiliate links to various websites that she recommends purchasing some of these items from. It doesn't cost us any extra money, but when we click the link,,,they throw her a bone for the recommendation. So, why not?!
