I was astonished when I gained 15 lbs over 3 years post menopause after having maintained the same weight for over 20 years with little or no effort. This book explains why its harder to lose the weight and how to adopt a new way of eating. The best part is that it has easy to make recipes with contents you can buy at the grocery store. Not labor intensive either. Now if it could only do my exercises FOR me!

Dr. Seibel and Karen Giblin have assembled a terrific book of recipes that will be enjoyed by midlife women and those that care about them. The recipes are delicious and nutritious. Healthy eating contributes to feeling energetic during menopause and midlife. Women who prepare these recipes will meet their unique nutritional needs and find their families and friends enjoy the dishes as well. I recommend this book to patients as well as friends and colleagues. Julia Schlam Edelman MD, FACOG, Certified Menopause Practitioner, and author of Menopause Matters: Your Guide to a Long and Healthy Life.

This has been one of the best books I have got in the past year of undergoing surgeries and chemotherapy for BC. This book is on my Kindle, which makes it so much easier to tote around and show other people. Give them some great ideas and recipes! It never hurts, because some one might buy it, after I have shown them and recommended it! So thank you for being there for me during a very long past year. I will proudly take this book with me into the New Year! Thanks

The info on menopause and overall general health is good, but not a "startling discovery." The recipes look really good, but I didn't find them mindful of healthy eating, in general, utilizing ingredients I would never eat like white table sugar and whit rice, for example. There are some that are very healthy, though. At the end of the day, eat more fruits & veges was my takeaway, less the $10 I paid to get that advice and a few recipes.

Very disappointed. Assumes that everyone in menopause has issue with low estrogen and recipes are to increase estrogen but there are a lot of women that are estrogen dominance and this is not what they need and could be dangerous

This is a GREAT go-to recipe book! The recipes are healthy- no matter if you are thick in the throws of pre-menopause or not! My husband and I enjoy the recipes in this book, and are looking forward to Karen creating another. I had the pleasure of meeting both authors, and they truly care about healthy eating before, during, and after menopause.

Eat to Defeat Menopause: The Essential Nutrition Guide for a Healthy Midlife
Karen Giblin and Mache Seibel, M.D.
[...]
Reviewed by: Anne Holmes for the NABBW

Author Karen Giblin knows her stuff: Recognizing that leadership in the menopause healthcare services arena was sorely needed, she founded Red Hot MamasR, which has become the largest menopause management education program in the US and Canada, in 1991. Her mission: to broaden the base of women's knowledge about menopause and empower them to become educated healthcare consumers and active participants in the management of their own menopause.
Today Red Hot Mamas is considered the largest menopause management education program in North America, delivering a variety of services which cater to the needs of this growing market.

Giblin's programs have achieved national recognition due to their commitment to defining the pathway to good health - through advocacy, education, support and research.

This book, co-authored with Mache Seibel, MD, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, is clearly an extension of her educational mission. It begins with a very wise quote from Moses Maimonides, purportedly AD 1200: "No illness which can be treated by diet should be treated by any other means."

Thus the goal of the book is to teach the approximately 50 million women in the United States who are in or near menopause how to make wiser food choices, exercise, and watch their weight in order to live long and be strong.
The authors come from different ethnic backgrounds, which adds to the recipe variety: Karen's kitchen specializes in Italian American recipes, while Mache's expertise is in Jewish American cuisine.

The information was pretty good. I couldn't identify with any of the recipes but that's just me; it doesn't mean someone else won't love it.
