From functional medicine expert and wellness authority Dr. Josh Axe, a groundbreaking guide to diagnosing and treating an often-discussed yet little-understood condition—leaky gut syndrome—that is dominating media headlines.
Most Americans live a “germ-free” lifestyle, sanitizing and scrubbing every surface, eating processed and pasteurized food, and slathering on anti-bacterial gels. But while our homes and hands may be clean, our health is taking a hit. Starved of actual nutrition and overtaxed by chemicals, stress, and excessive antimicrobial use, we are developing microscopic tears in our intestinal walls.
These tears can lead to a condition known as “leaky gut syndrome,” a deterioration of the gut wall that results in wide-spread inflammation and weakened immunity. In his bestselling book Eat Dirt, functional medicine practitioner Dr. Josh Axe explains the hidden causes and widespread effects of leaky gut syndrome and offers a program to heal the gut and restore health in five easy steps.
Dr Axe offers diagnostic quizzes to help readers assess their gut type, then provides simple regimes designed to heal the gut and eliminate digestive and autoimmune problems. From reducing antibiotic use to eating seasonally, spending more time outdoors, managing stress, and incorporating probiotic-rich foods into your diet, Dr. Axe’s program can help anyone restore gut health and feel their best.

From the Back Cover
In recent decades, modern “improvements” to our lifestyle and food supply have come with a cost: our health. From pesticides in our soil to the refrigeration and pasteurization of our food to an overreliance on antibiotics and a preoccupation with sanitizing everything in sight, our desire to be clean is actually putting us at risk for a host of chronic illnesses.
That’s because as we’ve shifted our focus to living a germ-free life, our bodies—specifically, our digestive systems—have taken a hit. Starved of actual nutrition, fed toxic levels of processed foods, and overtaxed by chemicals, stress, and excessive antimicrobial use, we’ve developed microscopic tears in our intestinal walls, leading to the widespread inflammation and weakened immunity that characterize a condition known as “leaky gut syndrome.”
In Eat Dirt, functional medicine practitioner Dr. Josh Axe explains the hidden causes and widespread effects of leaky gut syndrome, a condition that is thought to be ground zero for many of the country’s most confounding health crises—including allergies, asthma, food sensitivities, diabetes, digestive diseases, arthritis, thyroid conditions, and even frustratingly difficult-to-treat conditions such as chronic fatigue and autism.
Dr. Axe explains that 70 percent of our immune system is located in the gut—when it’s under attack, our health suffers. In leaky gut syndrome, a number of factors—including insufficient exposure to“dirt”—leads to the breakdown of the intestinal wall, allowing food, bacteria, and toxins to seep into the bloodstream. In Eat Dirt, Dr. Axe reveals that the solution, while counterintuitive, is almost effortless: we just need to welcome a little more “dirt” back into our lives.
From ditching hand sanitizers, using essential oils for personal products, reducing antibiotic use, and consuming local honey to spending more time outside, eating seasonally, managing stress, and incorporating probiotic-rich foods into our diets, Dr. Axe provides specific guidance to help everyone get a little “dirty.”

While I still have health issues (autoimmune) this book was one of the first stepping stones in my journey. It has wonderful information that is understandable and helped me take the steps to heal. If you have any sort of health issue (especially chronic) or just want to know more about your health and the importance of a healthy gut, I highly recommend this book, even 7 years later!
Pros: well written, helpful index, good mix of anecdotal to science, lots of ideas for things that could help, many extras online since the book can't get into all the details for various topics. I think Axe knows his stuff and the advice is solid.
Cons (applies to many books so not necessarily singling this one out. And this is longer bc now I'm trying to figure out how to proceed with the book's plan.):
Wish it had more detail on the eating plan or at least a link to detailed info. I'm familiar with paleo and autoimmune paleo (did Whole30 last year). I just find myself with a lot of questions and am already overwhelmed with how much I'll have to figure out to do this. Questions like whether a particular food is okay such as store bought kombucha. I don't know whether to trust that items in a store fit the bill. (I can't hand make everything. That would be hard when you feel ok but becomes nigh impossible when battling health issues. I make bone broth etc so I do make some things.)
If the author knows of good store items, that would help. Lots of people don't live near Whole Foods etc. I kind of do (Atlanta area) but none of the brands are familiar and it's a big store. A couple of recommendations for acceptable brands would really help. (author does this but only a few times, example: Ezekiel bread and Lara bars)
Stevia and coconut- certainly doesn't apply to everyone but for me, like many, stevia is unbearably bitter and the flavor (and smell) of coconut is... no, just no. Like profoundly no. Recipes don't say "stevia or honey" so does honey work in them? What about erythritol? And what does someone who loathes coconut do when such a high majority of recipes and food ideas call for coconut flour, cream, milk etc. (I know Almond flour but I don't think they substitute equally)
Probiotics and fermented foods: are pills enough? If so, what variety? I've found store bought kombucha I like and can tolerate Purple Haze kraut but that's it so far. Some folks like me can't even stomach regular dessert yogurt, much less kefir type flavors. So the book left me rather lost on whether what I can do will be enough.)
The biggie is of course expense. So many things are mentioned from bentonite clay to probiotics to essential oils. Bills are high with just pastured meats, decent Amazon supplements and an infrequent kombucha. I'm not clear how this can be affordable. (probably shouldn't have looked at the frankincense oil first. Lol) This is where we could really use a budget conscious plan. Which items hold priority? (I went with Axe's probiotic pills and vitamins) What do we have to pass on? (I decided testing, like OATS, was out. What else? Essential oils? The pricier supplements?) And no, sorry, saying we'll save on doctor bills later doesn't make money appear now. (doctors got me into this health mess. I don't trust them to get me out so I haven't put my money there.)
I'm sure all this will get easier. I literally just finished the book so this is a brain dump (and I've been off dairy and grains etc for 4 to 5 days so you know I'm edgy. Lol) Thank you Dr. Axe for putting so much great info in one place. Whether we can take advantage of the info or not doesn't make the info any less great to have. I'm hopeful.
Update (5 weeks in) : don't feel better yet and have lost so little weight as to be negligible. Note: it was really rough for a couple of weeks in there because I was ravenously starving 24/7 no matter how much I ate (and period vanished) . Had to do other research to realize I wasn't eating enough carbs even though there were some carbs in my diet. Soon as I put some carbs back in the starving went away and period came back (16 days late and came back with a vengeance. Miserable)
Update May 2017
Not long after the above review I began the Autoimmune Paleo protocol and had phenomenal results. Using that food testing I discovered which foods drove my depression and anxiety as well as my chronic pain. I lost 35 lbs when nothing else worked (like Whole30).
I highly recommend using aip to food test while working on healing the microbiome. Read 10% Human. Incredibly insightful
Everything changed six months ago when a family member recommended this book. I read it and listened to it (via Audible). I told my wife it appeared to be fit her symptoms, and we couldn’t see any harm in giving it a shot. We had thought we were eating healthy before, but Dr Axe had an approach to healthy eating that, although not exactly radical, was still different than what we had been previously exposed to. So we decided to give it a try.
Within two weeks we saw a dramatic difference. Within a month we saw more improvement than we had seen in the last five years. Six months later my wife is her old self again. In fact, we think she may actually have more energy now than she did before she originally got sick.
Now, it’s to be noted that we have not reincorporated wheat, cows dairy, refined sugar or refined oils back into our diet yet. We are intending to gradually reintroduce and she how she responds. Perhaps I will give an updated review at that point. But I will say this with absolutely sincerity: This book has done more for my wife than any doctor, chiropractor, naturopath or homeopathic practitioner. It was worth more than the tens of thousands of dollars we’ve cumulatively spent on all of them. I’m not a healthcare provider and I won’t pretend to be. But I do believe the ‘proof is in the pudding’ as it were. I hope this expression of appreciation works it’s way to the author of this book. Please feel free to use it or message me to give a more thorough testimonial. Because it’s, quite literally, the least we can do for how much we have gained from your work. After five years we have our life back. Thank you very, very much.

It would have been to have mentioned about digestive enzymes.
