Coconut oil, red meat, and butter-these fats are traditionally considered harmful, but this powerful book, based on more than two decades of research, shows that these saturated fats are actually essential to weight loss and health. Eat Fat, Lose Fat flouts conventional wisdom by revealing that so-called healthy vegetable oils (such as corn and soybean) are in large part responsible for our national obesity and health crisis. The three programs in this book, which features delicious coconut oil based recipes, among others, show that eating healthy fats is the answer to losing weight and achieving good health for a lifetime".If permanently losing weight while improving your health is a real goal, I highly recommend Eat Fat, Lose Fat". -Dr. Joseph Mercola, bestselling author of The No-Grain Diet"Dr. Mary Enig and Sally Fallon are two of the most important voices in the wellness revolution. Eat Fat, Lose Fat is a must read". -Jordan S. Rubin, author of The New York Times' bestselling The Maker's Diet

This book tells me why I gained 10 pounds when I converted from a high fat diet to a low fat diet. I am now following the book's advice and going back to a high fat diet. When I was a weightlifter tried to eat more protein that naturally comes with fat (beef, cheese, eggs, fish,...). I avoided bread, cereal, potatoes, sweets.... When I converted to marathon running I reversed my diet to include more carbohydrates that I previously avoided on the theory that I would run off the empty calories. My legs got thicker and I had to buy larger pants but I thought that was due to more muscles in my legs. I did note more fat around my waist and on my arms but shrugged it off. In fact, the high-carbohydrate diet did cause me to gain some fat that I did not have when on the high protein and high fat diet of my weightlifting years.

So now I am following the book's advice and am eating more fat. I immediately noticed a difference -- less cravings and an immediate drop in fat around the waistline and elsewhere. I am reducing carbohydrates and starches, but slowly in a zig-zag pattern to carefully note how the dietary composition affects weight, energy, mood, and other aspects of health.

This book is mostly recipes but the first section is full of useful facts. It lacks crucial footnotes that are probably in the longer book by the same authors. Many of the citations are very old so they may be classics or defective by modern standards. If the references are correct they are very important and need to be taken into account by current dietitians and researchers.

The key recommendation of the book is to use coconut oil that I previously had no experience with. It is a staple in many countries so there should be considerable epidemiological evidence that could be reported in the book. So far I like coconut oil. I also like butter and am glad the book gave me more reason to use it. I also like wheat germ oil and cod liver oil as recommended by the book. I immediately started feeling better when using these oils even though I previously thought them to be unhealthy empty calories (lack protein). It is not clear what is the optimal dose of these oils.

Overall this book is well written with great recommendations. Should be read in conjunction with easy current information such as the Dr. Lustig video "Sugar -- The Bitter Truth." More difficult is actual scientific literature on cholesterol and "the lipid hypothesis" which can link to numerous researchers and topics that support the ideas of this book. Much can be found on google scholar and wikipedia. For example

The Cholesterol Myths: Exposing the Fallacy that Saturated Fat and Cholesterol Cause Heart Disease

To know there is a problem with American eating habits, all you have to do is look around you. People are getting fatter and unhappier at an alarming rate! The dietary guidelines continually pounded into our heads by the US government and big business are not leading to a healthier, slimmer, more energetic population.

I never was a fast-food person and was pretty good about eating a "healthy" low-fat diet. So why didn't I feel really good? This book was the first I read in exploring a new way of eating that has brought myself and my family newfound health and vitality. We no longer endure those nagging food cravings - wandering around the kitchen opening cupboards trying to find that certain food to fill a void - is a thing of the past.

This book is full of information about fats; which ones are benefical and which are detrimental. I wasn't about to just take it as gospel though, without further investigation. I went on to read Nourishing Traditions, The Untold Story of Milk, and if you don't mind a bit of dryness for the sake of tons of carefully collected information, Dr. Weston Price's amazingly researched Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.

Eat Fat, Lose Fat presents the beginning of a much larger scenario that is both frightening and hopeful. Frightening because in just a few decades we have strayed so far from traditional healthy eating habits to a nation that relies far too much on heavily processed, over-heated, over-sugared, over-chemicaled food sources. Hopeful, because even though a near-radical change in eating habits is not easy, it is certainly worthwhile and of tremendous mental and physical benefit.

We eat differently now - preparing food takes a bit more preplanning, especially at first while you are learning a new way. Gathering our foodstuffs has become an adventure that I have enjoyed tremendously - buying pasture-raised eggs from our neighbors, organic veggies from small family farms, certified raw milk from a local creamery. I also have a whole new appreciation for our great natural foods store that, thankfully, is only a few miles down the road. If you don't have one near you, don't worry - you can conveniently shop on the internet for a whole array of carefully produced organic foodstuffs at reasonable prices and have them delivered right to your front door. In most areas, you can arrange for weekly pick-ups/deliveries of organic produce from wonderful little farms in your area. For the first time in years I have tons of energy and have planted a huge garden with all kinds of veggies and fruit that my family will thrive on. I've made arrangements to buy half a grass-fed beef this coming fall. So don't let the fact that this type of eating takes a little more time and effort deter you - you will have the extra energy and optimism to do it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Importance of Fats in our Diet
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 4, 2019
Not sure about the weight loss effect in the short term but the healthy eating recommendations in this book with the science to back them up should be required reading for all food faddists, self appointed experts and plant diet dictators in the world of nutrition as well as our political and medical masters making pronouncements on health matters they clearly know nothing about. As far as this author is concerned, biochemistry is everything and it is pointless to argue with that. Without fats, humanity would not have evolved in the way it has but for the first time in our evolutionary history, we are suffering the consequences of politically correct advice which has led to serious nutritional deficiencies and pandemics of chronic disease. Should maybe have had ‘The Coconut Diet for Health’ as its title.

The title is misleading. One should read this book even if not trying to lose weight. This book gives you a different perspective on the healthy diet not suggested/supported by the main stream nutritionists and doctors. I am trying to adopt the diet to suit Indian conditions considering we are not used to eating meat every meal. The fact that I have been following the dietary guidelines suggested by Weston A Price foundation will make it easier to adopt the diet suggested in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!! Such knowledge!
Reviewed in Canada on August 26, 2013
Yes! The title is scary...just contemplating it for some people might be a huge disconnect. Mary Enig is a specialist in fats. It's her field of study for her PhD, and does it show! There is so much useful information in here that can improve anyone's health. There is so much misinformation out there. Do yourself a favor and read this book. I borrowed it from a friend, read it and then I bought it. It is that mind blowing and I believe wholeheartedly what this book says. There are many people that think margarine is good for you when really it is very damaging! Don't you want to know why? So many of your systems rely on fat, hormones is just one.
This book made me think about my old relatives. I grew up on a farm and let me tell you, when I was a kid eating at great-great aunt's place, delicious food! It was loaded with healthy fats and it was wholesome foods. These people lived to 90 years old and not sick, fully functioning with great memories. This holds more truth in my books than any low fat food craze can possibly contain. That short-circuits your system and has you wasting hours of your life eating every two hours because you get jittery. Try it, you will be amazed.
Also, please note that it's not like everything is supposed to be dripping in fat, a bit goes a long way.
