The author should have spoken to more people dealing with this life threading disease. It’s not about the food - it never really about the food.
If you are struggling like Mindy is know you are enough, you are beautiful and loved. This book contains resources you can use for help as well as affirmations for you. All of those who struggle or know someone who is struggling should read this book,
If you are struggling, in any way, please reach out to someone.
Just like Mindy, I have struggled with my weight and perception of myself for most of my life. I sympathized with her, was angry, and was sad to the point of tears as I read her story. The artwork was powerful and thought provoking, and I believe the art added so much essential emotion and impact to the story. While I don't endorse the life choices made by the characters or the profanity used, the biggest thing that bothered me was that Mindy's story stopped abruptly and it didn't seem like much was going to change for her. I don't think her parents or her best friend really understood what they were doing to her when they made snide comments about her weight or eating habits. At least Elliott cared for Mindy because of who she was as a person and not just because of her appearance. I recommend this book with hesitation because the author did shed some light on how awful it is to have an eating disorder and not have any positive support, but at the same time, I don't think the abrupt ending portrayed a positive outcome because some loose ends were left untied.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. A positive review was not required, and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
Mindy is having a hard time loving herself, so when she stumbles across an “Eat, and Love Yourself” chocolate bar with the ability to show formative moments from her past, she is naturally a bit disturbed. She’s been living with an eating disorder from a young age, and has constantly struggle with changing her habits and accepting who she is. When the chocolate bar takes her back through time, however, she begins to realize that her eating disorder has its roots in the way she was treated as a child. With the help of a little reflection on her past, Mindy just might learn the power of eating and loving herself at the same time.
You can get your copy of Eat, and Love Yourself on April 21st from BOOM! Box!
Sweeney Boo and Lilian Klepakowsky have created a heartfelt graphic novel that I will not soon forget in Eat, and Love Yourself. This book has a poignant and empathetic way of looking at eating disorders. It truly speaks to the idea that each person is made of the events of their past, and that we should love ourselves no matter what we’ve been through. I was also a big fan of the artistic style of the novel, especially the fashion choices made for the characters!
My Recommendation-
If you’ve been going through a tough time recently, and are needing a story about self-love and self-discovery, Eat, and Love Yourself would be a good pick for your next read! Also, if you are a fan of magical realism, this book has a time traveling chocolate bar, which is one of the most creative things I’ve read in a long time!

I looked forward to this comic for years, and it was so worth the wait.
It's really difficult to talk to people about how you see your body, how you fill the void and how it feels, so to have a comic like this that j can show to my partner, my family, and let them see kind of what I go through, it's so beautiful to have.
Thank you Sweeney!
