Great reading! I can totally identify with the stories because I am a first generation Italian-American raised in Hell's Kitchen and in fact know Selvi Vescovi. He was a camp counselor at a Children's Aid Society camp (Vanderbilt and Bowdoin) and dated my sister, Nella Cornella. I could have read 52 more stories! It brought back many, many memories.

With clear eyed love, the author has written these sometimes hysterical, sometimes poignant stories of his immigrant grandparents' life in America. Although my grandparents came from China, and his are Italian, the instances of resilience, bewilderment, pride and dignity felt so familiar to me. This perspective of the American kid, the Old World grandparents, and the generation caught in between were juxtaposed to create this crazy quilt of relationships. I sensed that the stories were not embellished- they didn't have to be, because Vescovi has the wisdom to know that people are fascinating, just the way they are.

I laughed. I cried. Jim Vescovi tells a beautiful story of the immigrant and first generation Italian American experience in this great book. His grand parents Desolina and Tony are salt-of-the-earth, hard working Italian immigrants. They made hard choices, sacrificed and paved the way for their children and grand children. But they did it with class, and fun, and food, and quirks. You'll laugh and cry.

A true American success story, I highly recommend this wonderful book!

Few of us who are native born can imagine what it meant for Tony and Desolina to take the leap from everything they knew when they sailed to America.
