***Update*** May 21st
I received a phone call from the president of EatSmart (Bill). He requested the details of my problem and requested me to not return the product to make certain it stays out of inventory. He also said he will be sending me a new unit right away. I cannot say enough how impressed I am with the customer support for this company. I initially said that I would not buy anything from this company in the future but with fabulous customer care like this I would be foolish to not buy from them again. I will make another update to this once I receive the new scale.
***Update*** May 25th
I received my new scale on May 23rd. It was brand new with the batteries matching and in a plastic wrapper. I opened them up and placed them in the scale and turned it on and it is working. I have used each day since I received it and the unit is working properly and and the measurements are accurate. I wish I could change the star rating to higher but Amazon doesn't seem to let me change it after it was rated. If I were to rate this product again I would give it four stars. It does what it should but seems cheaply made. I would rate the support team a 10 as they truly do want to keep their customers happy.
But tonight I turned it on and there was an error reading on it but the screen also looked funky and I couldn't read what it was saying, so I turned it back off and on, still error. So I went to replace the batteries to see if that helped - no it did not, and also the spring inside the battery compartment broke off during the battery exchange so now I can't even try to troubleshoot anything because it no longer works at all.
I'm really bummed about this because otherwise it'd be a 5 star item. But the screen goes weird and you can't read it when something happens and then the spring is so feeble that it snaps off when you try to replace the batteries? The item should still be under warranty so I'll be contacting the company for an exchange or refund within the next few days. I'd love an exchange because it was perfect when working but I hope they made their battery compartment springs stronger.
I find this scale easy to use and extremely accurate. I usually set a dish on it, set tare to zero, then add food to the desired weight. Even with a fairly large bowl hanging over the edge of the weighing surface, it's easy to read the weight because of the scale's design. You can change from grams to ounces to pounds as you weigh, which is handy at times. The scale is easy to clean and slips easily into a drawer for storage. The only drawback I have found is that, if I am preparing food and adding it to a bowl on the scale as I go along, if too much time elapses before my next addition, the scale automatically turns off and I have to empty the bowl, restart the scale, and weigh the food all over again. This feature saves battery life, so I can't really complain too much - I have learned to work a bit faster and try not to get distracted. I have also used the scale to weigh letters before sending, if I have a thick envelope and am afraid I might need more postage. I have checked my weights against stated store weights and the post office's scales, and it is extremely accurate.
I'm not sure how I got along without this scale, now that I think of it.
