Add your old stereo devices to your Alexa Echo music system

It would have been nice if the unit had more than one set of stereo RCA inputs but the Toslink and digital coax inputs allow for adding a wider array of audio devices even if only one at at a time. I added a stereo mixer to my system so I could input multiple devices including an Echo Dot (so as to have voice control) into the Echo Link Amp’s RCA inputs and be able to balance the levels feeding into it. I fed the output of my SONOS Connect into it which works ok to add that platform to the Alexa Echo but there is just a bit of latency introduced by the Echo Link Amp’s processor, so you will want to make sure not to have those two systems close to each other in the same listening environment. Ok if you want to run a long line from the SONOS Connect where you can run a long line out to another level of your home where you cannot hear both systems at the same time. And while you can stream and pair music from all of your Alexa Echo devices to the Alexa Echo Amp (with no latency issues), you cannot pair the music feeding your Echo Link Amp to other Echo devices. But you can use the line outputs on the back of the Echo Link Amp to connect by wire to other audio equipment with line inputs without introducing any latency. The Echo Link Amp has no onboard EQ settings, which is cleverly set within the device settings of the Alexa app, where you can also set your crossover settings if you want to use the Echo Link Amp’s subwoofer connection. In conclusion I think the Echo Link amp is an affordable way to be able to add streaming music to your analog stereo system I just wish you could stream the analog equipment plugged into the Echo Link Amp to all of your other Echo devices in the same manner as the SONOS Connect does with their line input setting. Oh well, maybe some day.

Decent replacement for Bose SA5

I picked up Echo Link Amp since my Bose SA5 has been sitting with Bose for couple of months to get Airplay support. Reviews for Echo Link Amp were just ok, nothing special so I was a bit concerned. My setup needed to power 4 speakers - Bose Free space 51 and Polk Atrium 6 so I was not sure if this amp would be able to handle either.

I was quite surprised when I connect all four speakers and at 50% volume, it was loud. I went up to 60% and didn't hear any distortion and didn't wanted to bother neighbors either. Out of the box, the sound is a little flat for my taste, though good thing is that you can change the EQ settings and apply a crossover. You can set this amp with other Alexa's for multi room too, you just need to be on the same network. Multi-room on Alexa actually works pretty good. Overall, I have used Bose SA5 for 5 years, and I think Echo Link amp + Alexa devices are decent replacement for the whole Bose SoundTouch multi room speaker line. I am already selling my sound touch and will actually sell my Bose SA5 too when I get it back.

Here are the Pros -
1) Price $299 vs $499.
2) Way better iPhone App. Amazon keeps updating the app too. Bose Soundtouch app is buggy, loses connections to speakers, had to restart the app few times, it works though experience is pretty poor.
3) You don't have to be on your home network to control the speakers.
4) EQ settings + crossover support in the app.
5) Has Line out for stereo, subwoofer and optical too in the back. I have connected my old Airport express which has Airplay support and line out. It works great. If you are not playing music from the Alexa app, it switch to RCA stereo automatically.
6) Decent Internet music services. The ones I care about Pandora, Amazon Music, Audible and Apple Music are all there.
7) Amazon's support is far superior than what I have experienced with Bose.

Cons -
1) I haven't seen ability to play music from NAS or DLNA. Personally, this is not a deal breaker for me since I rarely used this feature.
2) App itself is designed more for Internet Radio. You cannot browse your library on the app. So you can see all Radio channels from Pandora, Apple Music, Amazon Music. In order to play an album, you have to ask Alexa to play a song or album. Again, this is not a deal beaker though this is something I hope Amazon adds it in their Alexa App. I understand this was not needed for Alexa devices though for the amp which is powering speakers outside in the patio, it would be nice.

Bought this as a test before buying more. I have multiple wired in speakers in my home that are all centrally routed to the family room. My hope was to use this in the living room for Alexa music on built in speakers and then tv audio from the tv also in that room (and way too far away from where the speaker connections terminate in the family room). I was successful.

The Alexa portion works great. Amp in the Family room connected to the speakers wired into the living room and an echo dot in the living room.

The tv audio is a little more complicated. Luckily I use Apple TV for all my tv usage. Routing is Apple TV 4K, airplay audio to old Apple TV. Old Apple TV in the family room is next to the amp and connected via toslink.

Works flawlessly. No lag between picture mouth movement and audio. There is a delay in sound start and end vs picture start and end but that’s not important. I don’t care if it’s 3 seconds of picture before the sound starts, or 3 seconds of continuing audio after the picture ends.

Only complaints, as others have noted is the volume control. Only Alexa streaming gets digital control. Everything else is manual (which potentially means walking across the house). Luckily for me airplay streaming has a volume control too. which for me, means I cant watch tv at a volume higher than the streaming was set to. But I can adjust it on the Apple TV (again limited by whatever my streaming volume was set to)

Of note, there is no option to add the old echo remote (as that option exists on some other echo devices), which I would have been very keen on, and amazon should include.

Likely will buy another for another (outdoor) zone. Then connect both to analog 2nd zone pre-outs on an AV receiver in the family room via a simple rca switch. So I can choose to either play Alexa room by room or the receiver. Also will likely connect the yet purchased echo amp output to the receiver input as well so I can Alexa play everywhere and include the receiver.

I do not consider myself an audiophile, but more of a technophile. That said the audio to me is largely speaker dependent. I am not gonna sit on a couch and try to hear how perfect a song is. I stream Apple Music, amazon music or Spotify. I love music but don’t need to study it.

This product is almost 100% what I was hoping for. Consistent volume control, across all sources, echo remote compatibility and manual input selection would knock this out of the park. I feel like 2 of these issues can and should be resolved with software.
