Editorial Reviews

Recognized as one of the world's most influential bands in rock music, Grammy-winning multi-platinum selling band Soundgarden started a musical transformation that inspired a generation in its record-breaking career, leaving an indelible mark by helping redefine alternative and hard rock. Hard on the heels of the 20th anniversary deluxe re-release of its chart-topping, five-times-platinum 1994 album, 'Superunknown,' earlier this year, Soundgarden's latest release is a 3-CD rarities collection, 'Echo Of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across The Path.'

Among the seven unreleased tracks is a brand-new recording, 'Storm,' recorded in May with producer Jack Endino in Seattle. The new collection was curated and hand-selected by guitarist Kim Thayil. 'Echo Of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across The Path' is the first time an official Soundgarden release has included more than 26 years of rarities that have appeared as B-sides, album bonus tracks, EPs, soundtracks, compilations and live recordings, a must for any fan of the band. The package features three separate thematic discs in a clear plastic slipcase with three separate mini-jackets, each sporting its own unique art, a booklet and inserts, allowing fans to mix and match, personalizing their own album graphic layout.

Wow, what can you say? There's plenty in this collection that solidifies Soundgarden position as pioneers in their genre. I am very glad they didn't name this collection "B-Sides" because clearly, now having all these songs in my collection, besides being extremely happy, a lot of things songs will get constant play time along side the a-side material. I am glad the Soundgarden machine is running again and they did something to put this together as these tracks should have never been kept from us. For instance, She Likes Surprises, is an incredible track that was rightly left off Superunknown in the context of the full album (you can here why it doesn't fit), but it certainly doesn't fit into the context of what filler or b-side material is. Birth Ritual, Kristi, Toy Box, Fresh Deadly Roses, Cold Bitch, Black Days III are treats and show the richness of Soundgarden. Thanks for putting this together guys and hopefully you can get us some new stuff soon as well. Oh, btw, several of these would be most welcome on tour.

**after a few listens, I love what I got here. Anyone hesitant to pick this up ought not to be. It's like a brand new Soundgarden album the wealth of material they've given us here. One surprise was "Into the Void (Sealth)". If anyone has covered this Black Sabbath tune better you need to tell me, because it's as good as Black Sabbath playing it themselves. It's a fun compilation and if you love the band, you'll understand why you need this added to your collection. Some songs are so good and continue to grow on me. Buy it, you won't regret it.

A journey through the beyond unknown, Soundgarden has done it again... Dating back 20 something years ago with there early stuff on here. Sub Pop Rock City and Toy Box you hear Kim's distorted chorus pedal tones with a rich phycodelic sound. The Louder Than Love era b-sides have a great hard hitting punch, and there's the sweet sounding Fresh Deadly Roses, witch can remind one of later songs such as Black Hole Sun or the on-album She Likes Surprises. Meanwhile I feel Exit Stonhendge should be on the Oddities disc while Kareoke should be on the Originals, but whatever, this is beyond a "B-Sides" album... It's a full covered slap of everything! Very great, I bought the box set and the digital copy. Kim quotes in the booklet there will be a vinyl of the Originals coming out in the future. Record Store Day maybe? I'd love to have the vinyl as well... Just not on Record Store Day, there limited edition, so I would love for a full production of the vinyls! Btw, see these guys live they rock! Total F*cking Godhead! Praise Knights of the Sound Table! Turn it up and rock your ass off with this great Echo Of Miles:Scattered Tracks Across The Path!!!!

I've been a huge Soundgarden fan for most of my life. After hearing about the B-Sides collection for years and years, I was losing hope that it would ever be released. It is almost surreal to finally have this.

As other fans have said, this is pretty much only for people who know Soundgardens main albums in and out, and still want more. If you are a casual fan or just starting, get Badmotorfinger and Superunknown. But if you are like myself and own all albums and eps already, and want to own everything they have ever recorded, then get this. This set has some awesome gems; some of my all time favorite Soundgarden songs are B-Sides on this set. Stuff like Cold Bitch, Toy Box, HIV Baby, Birth Ritual, Blind Dogs, Karaoke, etc. are just as strong as songs from their studio albums, and stronger than pretty much any modern rock radio hits. 3 discs and 50 songs total make this well worth the price. Any die hard fan needs to have this set!

In 1997, after Soundgarden went on an indefinate hiatus, Kim Thayil hand picked most of the band's singles and released a compilation album entitled A Sides. Since then, fans have been clammoring for a "B sides" collection and according to producer, Jack Endino, this rarites collection have been in the making since roughly 1992. After all these years, it is finaly here. This limited edition set is available on 3 picture disc CD's or 6 LP picture disc vinyl.

This set is divided into three full length albums. They are Originals, Covers and Oddites. The first album in the set is the Origianls which contains Soundgarden's original songs that did not make the cut on their previous albums. The second album in the set are the Covers which contains cover songs that have been previously released as B sides and non-album tracks. The third album in the set are Oddities which contains "weird" tracks and remixes that doesn't neccesarily fit in with the first two albums in the set.

Originals contains many sought after B sides and non-album tracks such as: Sub Pop Rock City, Heretic, Fresh Deadly Roses, HIV Baby, Cold Bitch, Exit Stonehenge. Kristi is a previously unrelased studio track which have been known in the Down on the Upiside live set as Christi. Storm is a previously unreleased re-recorded track from a 1985 demo. It contains Ben Shepherd on bass and Matt Cameron on drums and the track was co-produced by Jack Endino.
