Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh was born Ileana Apostolescu in Ploiesti, Romania during the communist era of Nicolae Ceausescu. Bringing this American to tears, "Echoes of Communism" truly recounts the luxurious freedoms Americans enjoy that many, especially living under communism, do not. It's that simple, but profound! Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh's experiences will enable you to understand the many many harsh realities of such dictatorships including a scary and tragic exposure of socialized medicine. So much to gain from reading this book! I have always been thankful for my country and the freedoms we as Americans enjoy daily, but after reading this powerful book, I stand humbly before my peers and say, this should be required reading for every school, college, and university in America! God bless you Dr. Johnson Paugh and your family. My husband is also from Romania and suffered similarly until his family escaped to the United States of America and immigrated as you did, which took years and help from NY senators and the Orthodox Church in America.
Dr. Johnson does an excellent review of life under the repressive regime of Ceausescu. I know because I also lived it, the tart taste stays with you for the rest of your life. The author's narrative, matter-of-fact style does a wonderful job teaching the American youth the perils of this form of government, especially at a time when more young people are taught by the liberal academia that socialism is good. Nothing could be further from the truth. When it comes down to it, nothing else matters but the literal aspects of life, how everyday people live, their economic, political, and social liberties or lack thereof. Echoes of Communism takes the reader through every day life, and shows in no uncertain terms every aspect of rationing everything, from food to freedom to healthcare. Parents of high school kids should consider making this required reading for their offspring, if they care about the path this country is taking lately. Parents can still have a say in their kids' education, don't rely just on the Department of Education.

This is the story of life in Romania under communist rule. The hardships of socialism are told in story form as the author relates various aspects of her life and drudgery and despair of the proletariat. A must read for anyone who thinks socialism/communism is a superior way of life and for those who want to be able to explain reasons why socialism/communism will not work in a free country.

"Echoes of Communism" is a must read for any American who thinks that socialism is a tolerant ideology! I've just finished reading Ileana Johnson's book and it opened a lot of old wounds for me, a professional man that went through that Hell on Earth called Romanian Socialist Republic. Good stories, to the point and 100% accurate. God save America from the clutches of Marxism!
Dr. Paugh does a great job sharing her past with us in order for us to prepare for the future under a socialist/communist dictatorship. The vignette style made it an easy fast read. I would recommend this book to those willing to learn from someone who has been there.

After reading Dr. Ileana Johnson Paugh's "Echoes of Communism," my husband said that it should be required reading for ALL Americans -- I agree -- concisely, directly and vividly told -- though not doubted, we understand, and are quite impressed, that our son has so highly esteemed her since sitting under her teaching in high school -- a true American treasure -- thank you for telling your story, Dr. Paugh --
