Product Description

The haunting tones of the Native American flute, bamboo flute and shakuhachi are presented solo and accompanied by the gentle pulse of world percussion and synthesizer in the meditative music shaped by the vast history and perspective of the Southwest. Peter Phippen is known throughout the heart of the country for his passionate and soulful playing of traditional flutes from many cultures.

It is with his first album Book of Dreams that flutist and composer Peter Phippen was first spoken about in the United States. It is a shame that this record was not well distributed in France at the time of is release (one can only find it at the Virgin Megastore) because it would delight the amateurs of this genre [of music]. Peter PHIPPEN plays various flutes on this record (the Amerindian cedar, bamboo flutes and flutes from the Andes: the quena and the quenacho, the latter being longer and lower [having more bass]) and he is accompanied by an acoustic guitar and drums that give and original color to the ensemble. We rediscover in Book of Dreams a magnificent revival of the famous Scarbourough Fair by SIMON & GARFUNKEL, where the flutes replace the two voices; the other pieces are composed by Peter PHIPPEN and the guitarist Mike SCHLENKER, who both surrender themselves to a duel of astonishing flute and electric guitar in the last song Delsions.

With this new album, Echoes of the Past, Peter PHIPPEN astonishes us again with a radical change of instrumentation that takes nothing away from the beauty of the music. The flutes are still prominent, but South America has given way to Japan and, more precisely to the shakuhachi flute, for more 'zen' compositions reinforced by a discreet synthesizer (except in Daughter of the Mist and Echoes of The Past, where the loops / changes are more plentiful), which set us up for the flutes that are played with a style that extends beyond the imagination. The drums have given way to the ethnic percussion which delights and provides an even more passionate, mysterious and mystical atmosphere. The singer Deborah HOPKINS offers some vocals on Emerald Mountain in which the flute responds by laughing; to this piece is linked a very oriental Fire where two flutes pay a theme in parallel, yet rediscover themselves sometimes in duet. This record concludes with a bansuri flute solo playing with its echo.

There is not doubt that with such talent and so many beautiful melodies that Peter PHIPPEN will one day be one of the greats. --By Kara Vance - Ethnotempos - Ethnic Music of Today
