Brilliant! I love it!
If I was to build a device myself to do what this does, this would pretty much be it. I'm very happy that I selected this over the standard "Helping Hands" type of station. With the lightweight base that can be secured a number of ways, it's safe to put on my guitar. I just got it, and I've already used it for a variety of things... but mostly to work on my music gear.First of all, I'll address other comments.1. It came well packaged, and the items didn't move around at all. If they did, I wouldn't really care. It's not going to hurt anything.2. You don't have to crank this thing down so hard that it cracks the plastic! How heavy of a project do you think this can handle??The white plastic piece does pop off, but it's by design. You can pop it right back on. If you break it, or you crack the base, you're probably cranking it down too hard,A little common sense here... If you're doing a heavy job, these wire-armed clamps probably won't hold it up to begin with. Get one of the Helping Hands with the iron base, or secure it to something permanently like another reviewer did. For the type of thing this is designed for, you don't have to tighten it down that much. I used a couple hair ties to hold it to my guitar body, and that worked fine.3. The screws that hold the attachments in are minimally effective. They basically keep them from falling out... period. They won't keep the arms from rotating... but you would usually WANT them to freely rotate. It's the up and down motion that you want stability in, and they have it.Yes, it has six attachments, but four holes. At first, I too thought that was kind of dumb, but the magnetic attachment is more handy as a separate tool to root out screws and springs from places my fingers won't get into. That leaves the magnifying glass and three clips coming out of the base. So far, I've only needed two of them (usually just one). I use the fourth spare as a heat sink when I'm soldering (I can then set it aside to cool down). The magnifying glass is nice, and is the perfect power. It's strong, too. I've dropped it several times already, and it hasn't broken.I've included three pictures of it in use with my guitar. The standard Helping Hands is much more limited. This is one of those things that is so cool, I want to order another just to keep as a spare, should I ever need it... but as long as I'm not cranking this thing like a gorilla, it should be fine.Highly recommended.

I purchased one of these to assist me when I am building plastic models a month or so ago. It is not that expensive, however it is also not that high in quality.

When the device arrived, I was somewhat disappointed. It looked like it had been badly cobbled together from assorted off the shelf parts. Within a week, the plastic piece to the large clamp that holds it tight on the desk broke off. The plastic was very poor quality and had simply split and fallen off. To their credit, the company who sold it to me did back it up and send out a replacement. But I am sure it is only a matter of time before the replacement has the same issue. The plastic base on the new one is already starting to develop what looks like a stress fracture around the large hole that the big clamp slides into on it's side.

One more thing that kind of baffles me. The kit comes with 4 alligator clamp attachments, a small magnetic attachment (one would assume for small metal parts.), and a magnifier. That's six attachments. However, the device only has 4 holes so you cannot use all of them at the same time. You would think that they could have put in a few more hole for the remaining attachments... Oh yes, Almost forgot, the attachments are held in place (supposed to be anyways.) by a metal thumbscrew that screws in horizontally from the side of the base, into each hole. These screws are pretty useless. After a while, the attachments get so loose that the screws will no longer hold them in properly. If the unit had 6 holes, then this wouldn't be as much of an issue, because you could just glue the attachments in the holes permanently, but if you do that, you will lose the use of 2 of the attachments permanently. This is NOT a really smart design...

In conclusion, you get what you pay for. I really don't feel good about recommending this item to anyone. Even at the cheap price tag, you could probably make your own for around the same price. and it would definitely be higher quality.

Realize this is a specialty tool and the quality is marginal. But nevertheless, the completely flexible arms out-articulate a "Third Hand" solid rod swivel ball joint holder about 100 to 1. For soldering I purchased a dozen STAINLESS STEEL alligator clips and when the steel clips on this tool become gross then I will switch them for stainless clips.

This is really useful. I solder jewelry and I have one of the other helping hands contraptions but I got tired of having to tighten and loosen the screws all the time. This is great because I just bend them to where I need them and they are ready to go. So much faster. I like that the base came with sticky foam tape on the bottom because I simply stuck this to the granite square that I use as my base. It holds great and I can simply replace the foam tape if it starts to come off in the future. I couldn't use the vice grip because it just doesn't open far enough. My desk is a bit over one inch thick and the tile is about 1/4 inch thick. The vice doesn't open that far so it won't work unless you have a thinner surface. Not a big deal. I like that you get extra arms and that one has a magnet on it, although it's not strong enough to be useful. I'm soldering small pieces and the magnet doesn't hold them securely enough. I might try glueing on a stronger magnet because it's a good idea.

This really only works with smaller pieces because the clips aren't that big or sturdy, but for my small jewelry pieces it's fine. It could be a bit sturdier as the arms don't always stay exactly where I need them, but if I use two clips to hold things then it works better. I can't really use the magnifying glass because I have to keep adjusting the position so I can see things properly through it. But it's still a nice feature to have.
